I'm so happy. I just found the passenger list of my great great grandmother, her sister, and parents on this site. THANKS!!!!

The family lore is that my great great great grandfather was Hans Swinson Fie (or Tie) from Fie, Norway. Named after his ancestors, across a Fjord from Riser, about 100 English miles from Christiana (aka Olso), Norway.

His wife (Marie) and daughters (Ingeborg and Aase M) were said to be from upper Telemarken.

I couldn't find either Fie or Tie as a farm estate. Where should I be looking?

If I were to look for Hans in a census, which one would I most likely find him? 1701, 1801, 1865 or 1900? The area you're talking about is kind of on a border between two fylkes.

Use this map www.1881.no/Map
put Fie in the Søk (Search) line and Velg (choose) Fie (Gårdsbruk), Risør, Aust-Agder - the farm is across the Sandnesfjorden from Risør!

Both maps were helpful. Thanks. I'll use them also when I get working on the Andersons and Knudson too. I don't think I'll find Hans in a census there. He was born in 1814 and left in 1850. He married Marie Torgeson on july 2 1846.

His father might be there but we don't have much just Swin Fie (1765-1828) Fie Norway

Your Hans Swinson Fie was baptized Sept 23 1814, see right hand page, column for "Døpte Drenge" here
His father was Svend Svendsen Fie (he is actually Hans Svendsen)
Hans left Søndeled June 3 1850 with his wife Maren Johnsdatter and their two daughters Aase Marie 3 1/4 years and Ingeborg Johanne 1 1/2 years old. See right hand column

on the passenger list it was Hans Swendson
in the 1860 census the family member all used Svenson
in the 1870 census Hans Swinson
in the 1880 census Swenson
he was buried as Hans Swinson.
His sons use Swinson (they were born in Wisconsin).
My great great grandmother (the Aase) used Swenson.
On the marriage licence, Ingeborg used Svenson.

So then the census that I posted is a different family. The employment as a "Skipper" is what led me to it.

the Svend Svenson Fie from Eibache seems a perfect fit.

Marie's children differed on her maiden name.
Aase (she became a Mary) used Johnson and the boys' families reported Torgeson on the death certificate under mother's maiden name.

I had wonder why Johnson rather than the Johnsdatter that was on the list of when they left Søndeled.

Here's what I had been given from Hans' grandson

1. SWIN FIE was born 1765 in Fie, Norway, and died 1828.

Children of SWIN FIE are:
i. MARTHA SWINSON, d. 14 years old.
2. ii. HANS FIE SWINSON, b. September 16, 1814, Fie, Norway; d. October 23, 1886.

Generation No. 2
2. HANS FIE SWINSON (SWIN FIE) was born September 16, 1814 in Fie, Norway, and died October 23, 1886. He married MARIA TERGESON July 02, 1846 in Norway, daughter of JOHN TORGESON and EMMA TERKELSON. She was born March 16, 1822 in Upper Tilemarken, Norway, and died March 18, 1906.

Hans Svendsen, Fie was confirmed in 1830, see #15
(baptized Sept 23)
His father Svend Svendsen died Dec 26 1830 and was burried Jan 2 1831, he was then 67 years old, see #1
he should have been born about 1763 then - have not found his record.

I've seen a few post refer to LDS and thought that was something other than the Family Search site. I hadn't had much luck there a few years ago, but tried it again yesterday. It does seem to be a tool I should use more frequently.

I put in Svend Svendsen 1764 (+-5) and it found:

Sven <SVENSEN> Christening: 25 Jul 1765 Place: Hommedal, Aust-Agder, Norway
Parents:
Father: Sven PROSSEN
Mother: Targier ANDERSDR

Then found Sven Svensen Birth Record #25

Where is Hommedal compared to Risør or Fie? What can be done to build a case for this Sven being our sven?

Hi,
Hommedal parish doesn't exist anymore. The area are split between Grimstad and Birkenes municipalities.

On the map below, it's the area above the "G" in Grimstad.

I think the father of Sven Svensen, born 1765 should be Sven Protsen and the farm should be Udjus.
Sven Svensen had an older brother Prots Svensen born in 1750, their parents Sven Protsen and Targier Andersdatter were marrie Dec 6 1742.
