I have searced the probate register for Sunhordland, includes Etne , I did find two probates for Kristen Kristensen Støle and a one for Kristen Rasmussen Haaland in Etne for 1712 (the last is only a wild guess).

Same information here about 47 mm down, no information on his father Kristen.

Guess you know that Studla, Stødle, Støle was one of the most well-known/famous farms in the history of Norway mentioned both in the viking- and middle age?

One place to start is the online 'Personregister for Etne-soga. Perhaps you can find your Kristen Kristensson in the list and thus determine which volume you need and what page to look.

If you live close to a library such as Stavanger, they will likely have copies of the books that you can use at their facility. If you do not live close to a library, many will copy parts of the Bygdebok if you know what part you want to have copied, see register above. Deb - you appear to live in Norway (you've listed your location as Norway in your profile at this website) so this is slightly confusing to me.

A friend from Norway has written great information about how to use and obtain bygdeboks such as those for those of us that live in the US, perhaps they will help you too --

The same friend has good basic "how-to" articles for study --

St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota has all five volumes on file. I would doubt that they do inter-library loans of these volumes but perhaps they would be willing to copy some pages for you. If you could visit the library you could use the person register to narrow down your search.

The church books and 1801 censuses for Etne if you want to do look ups, change census by click on same areas on top line.

When using the censuses, start with one or two letters too see how a name is spelled, always use contains. As for given name Osmund/Aasmund, he was spelled Usmund; by using contains mund it was was how I was able to find him.

When was your g.grandfather born? Try to look for him, if its dificult first time you will get help here.

I have been working with Stødle from the middelage and earlier some years ago, this is my first wisit to the 1700-1800 Stødle, interesting.

Bjørn from Støle was a handpicked soldier on the big ship Ormen Lange in the battle of Svolder in the year 1000. Ormen consited of 34 rooms, Bjørn fought in "Forrommet", the room on front of the mast.

In 1030 Lendmann "County governor" Erlend from Gjerde turned against the king and partissipated in the uprising army in the Battle of Stiklestad against King Olav II Haraldson of Norway. Erlend fall in the battle.
Around I820-30 a Runic stone was found in the stone fence at Gjerde church, on one of the sides it´s engraved: Erlend made this Runes after (to honor) Olve (his) father. The stone is dated to about 1100 so it´s a younger,unknown Erlend Gjerde.

1115 Erlend´s Ggrandson Erling Kyrpinga-Ormsson Skakke was born on Stødle,he fall on Kalvskinnet, the garden at Nidarosdomen in Trondheim in the civil war (1140-1240) against King Sverre Sigurdsson on June 19. 1179.

I have seen Torsen, Thorsen, Thoresen and Torresen used for the same person, very common.

Could be her, not confirmed, she is listed as born 1793, the only Kristi Torsdatter I found in Ølen was this next on Nerem Store, 1801 census, for Huustvedt 1801 census, no candidates:
Kristi Torsdatter born 1793 on Nerem, Ølen, baptised Nov. 5., 2. column from right, 2. baptism from top:
D 5te Novemb:Døbt Tor Nerems Dat: Christie, here

Then Baard was your g. grandfather, I think Britta Serine was mixed up with John, both born 1862 is incorrect, what became of the oldest son Thor?

Time for a brake, its many names to classify, perhaps tomorrow will give an answer.

They sailed on Bark Haugesund, dep port Haugesund Mai 13, arrived Quebec June 26, same names as in the emigration record pluss Thor age 8, passengers #44-49

Information from Etnesoga, the dates is coming from other records, probate register, cort cases etc.

Let´s return to Kristen Kristensen Kambe and Stødle 1703-63 and Gurro Olsdatter 1706-63, she was from Osnes in Etne born to;

Niels Andersen Osnes 1651-1732 from Austrheim and Sissel Olsdr. from Hordland in Etne 1678-1710.
In 1692 Niels Andersen leased Osnes farm nr 1. from priest Kamstrup and settled down there.
Niels Andersen was born to;

Anders Jensen Austreim 1628-94 and unknown mother.
Anders Jensen received as heir half of Austheim from his father in 1657 and the rest in 1670, but didn´t manage to pay out the other heirs and died in poverty and hunger in the hard and difficult year 1694.
Anders Jensen Austrheim was born to;
Jens Andersen about 1597-1670 and Sissel Nielsdatter.

Sissel Olsdr. Hordland, see abowe, was born to;
Ole Andersen Helleland 1645-1714 and Anna Størkersdatter from Høyland in Etne. Ole Andersen was a "Lagretteman" Local judge in Etne and church warden for Grindem church, he bought half of Hordland from the priest in Etne, Samuel Jacobsen Bonde (born about 1610, died on Kambe 1674) and settled down on Hordland in 1675.
The probate register tells he owned 7 cattle, 15 young cattled, 44 goats and cheeps, 144 Riksdaler in money and a gun.

Ole Andersen was born to Anders Jensen Helland from Førdal iv Vikedal, a small country-side in Vindafjord municipality in Rogaland county and unknown mother.

That will do for tonight.

More from "Etnesoga"
Anna Størkersdatter Høyland in Etne 1650-1717, see abowe, was born to Størker/Styrkår Syversen/Sjursen 1646-58 from Aurdal in Vats, Skjold parish in Rogaland and Anna Tjerandsatter Høyland, Etne, born about 1635, died 1705 on Høyland.

When I Googled Anna Tjerandsdatter Høyland I came across this family tree with available additional information, all sources are registered, it looks professional, honest and correct to me.
You can look for yourself here

Hard to get any further back Deb, Etnesoga, the "Bygdebooks" from Etne and "Sverresoga" has interesting information about the youngest son to Earl Erling Skakke from Stødle, Sigurd Erlingsson born about 1170 I will bring up later.

Hi, you are welcome.
It was the heirs who distributet the inheritance. Oldest son inherits the part in the farm, he had to pay the rest of the siblings for their rightful shares by the law called Odelsrett.
I have been told Minnesota has/had a fairly simulare law.

It could be many shareholders in a farm, a farmer could be a shareholder in several farms and changed lastname after where he lived.
If a daughter inherit the farm she was only the owner until she married, if she married as a widow her children from the first marriage was the rightful heirs to the farm.
A woman was only in the interest of the outhorities (the king) if she owened a farm, tax-payer, when she married she was mentioned as the farmers "Kvinde" Woman (no name), or as a widow until oldest son takes ower the farm, that´s why the wifes/mothers often are mentioned as unknown.

You are right, Kristen Kristensen Kambe and Støle was 5. generation after Anne Tjerandsdatter Høyland (Highland).

Young Sigurd Erlingsson was an exiting person.

Stødle/Støle in Etne where your ancestor Kristen Kristensen lived about 1750 was one farm in the viking- and middleage, three farms and three subfarms in 1801.
It´s very unusual we know exactly where the people lived in the middleage, Støle is an exception. Sigurd was the youngest son of Erling Skakke from Støle born about 1171, his mother was "Åsa den lyse", one of Erlings many mistress.

Earl Erling Skake from Stødle was exept for the kings the mightiest man ever lived in Norway in the middleage.

His youngest son Sigurd was 9 years old when Erling fall in Trondheim 1179 and 14 years when his half brother king Magnus V fall at Fimreite 1184 against king Sverre. Sverre percecuted his three older brothers Reidar, Ogmund and Finn and killed them one by one.
Sigurd was taken to Sverres fortress Sverresborg to be raised as his foster son, Sverre wanted to conciliate with Sigurd but he refused all of the kings efforts. Sigurd lived in the court where he learned to read and write until 1193 when he managed to escape.
Sigurs always used Jarlssson as last name, means the son of the Jarl (Earl)

Most likley Sigurd participated in the seabattle at Florvåg at Bergen April 11. 1194 where Sverre won, Sigurd escaped and run to Vinje, central-west in Telemark county.

Two boards with strange charcters was found 1796 when Vinje stave church was demolished because of rot and was kept by the priest. Runic experts tells the incriptions are dated to June 18. 1194 (10 years after king Magnus fall) with following incripitions carved with a knife in V-form;

Sigurd Jarlson carved these runes saturday after botlovs mass when he had to flee here and did not want any reconciliation with Sverre his father and brothers slayer.

Sigurd was a great chief for the Bagleparty and fought many battles against Sverre.
1196 in Semsfjorden in Vestfold county, eastern Norway, Sigurd came on shore on a headland by using a row boat with some of his men; he wanted to tease the king. Sverres big ship Hovedbussen was moored by the seashore, Sigurds men called for the king and Sigurd shouted before he withdraw "Is Sverre "min husbonde" (my head of household) on board?" The guardsman Ljot Haraldsson answered "King Sverre is on board, and never has he given lodging to a worse man, your behavior shows that"
Sverre later calles Sigurd a wise man.

Sigurd Jarlsson liklely survived Sverre who died March 1202.
Authumn 1201, a document, se further down, show a letter from Reidar Sendemann, he told he and a floc of Baglers stayed on Slottsfjellet, Tønsberg town, surrounded by the Birkebeiner, he send a message to Inge Magnussen and Sigurd Jarlsson, requesting for reinforcement before Niculas mass (Dec. 6.), see here
Reidar Sendmann and his men surrounded after 20 weeks of starvation.

Inge Magnussen, Bagler king from 1196-1202, was Sigurds nephew, son of king Magnus V Erlingsson. Reidar Sendemann, Bagler chief, married to Margaret, one of king Magnus daughters, he died 1214 serving in the Emporers guard in Istanbul, Turkey. Another daughter of king Magnus, Ingebjørg, maried Birkebeiner chief Peter Støyper, king Sverres nephew. King Magnus had more children not mentioned here.

The last we hear from Sigurd Jarlssonn is from a sea battle in Årdal, the inner part of Sognefjorden, western Norway, Sogn Fjordane county , Dec. 1201 where the Baglers lost against Sverre and Sigurd was forced to flee across the mountain to Valdres, sout-west in Oppland county, eastern Norway.

No one seems to know why Sigurd run to Valdres. His sister Ragnild´s daugher Ragnhild Jonsdatter married Duke Skule Baardsson Rein, his mother was from Kviden in Valdres, was it because of that Sigurd run to Valdres?
Skule Baardsson was one of the leaders in the guard to his brother king Inge II Baardsson, did Sigurd serve there or did he feel that his mission was completed when king Sverre was dead?

Cources; King Sverres Saga written by two Iclandic´s; Abbot Carl Jonsson who came to Norway 1185 and worked for king Sverre and Snorre 1178-1241, king Magnus Saga written by Snorre and Ingolv Vevatne, a copy of the runic board kept in the University of Oslo was given to Etne, see here.

Hi,

The Story County, Iowa genweb page (www.usgenweb.com )has numerous wonderful online searchable databases. Don't know if this helps but here is Thomas E. Holt's and Cecelia's entry in the Heastone transcriptions found there:

Holt Cecelia 06 Sep 1846 24 Mar 1904
Holt Thomas E. 06 Jan 1848 22 Apr 1927 Fairview

So Thomas was indeed a widower in 1914 if he hadn't married again...

3) Kristi Osmundsen born 1851 married Osmund Olsen Birkenes born 1843 in Veste in Etne, settled down in Langford USA.
It looks like Kirsti Osmundatter Rødne left Vikedal for Stavenger town April 16.1877 with a son, Ole Severin born July 3. 1874. Her husbund Osmund Olsen Bjerkenes in Etne seem to have left earlier, right page 2. from top #2-4, because of that we can assume they emigrated from Stavanger.

Did Tom Holt remarry, maybe?. I did not find a Tom Holt born in Norway in the 1920 US Census at all. However there is a Tom Holt born in Norway age 72 ie 1848 living in Lafayette, Story, Iowa with wife Cecelia age 62 ie born in 1858. Tom immigrated in 1884 Cecelia in 1866. This Cecelia does not fit the earlier Selia from the 1900 US Census as that Selia was born in abt 1847 and immigrated in 1885.

I hope this just doesn't confuse things Deb but actually adds.

One way that can be used to determine if that Tom E Holt is your family is to follow the children. Osmund being a rather unique name lends itself to that. The Iowa State Census dated 1 Jan 1925 lists an Osmund Holt, age 50 ie born 1875 for Boone County Iowa. His father is listed as T E Holt and mother as Celia Rodne. Father is born in Norway abt 1848 and mother born in Norway. No wife listed, has three children living with him, Marvel, Ora and Thomas. Also living with them is his sister Amanda age 34 ie born in 1891.
