Seeking information on my husband's grandma "Nettie" Modahl Olson. She married Carl Arthur Olson. Tonette is buried in Minnesota at Lakeview Cemtery wth otehr siblings, but I cannot locate what farm she came from, etc. She had many friends who would fly over around 1972-73 from Norway to the farm in Antelope Montana for visits, my husband recalls. The Amercian actress Arlene Dahl apparently is his cousin, but she rumor is that she dropped the "Mo" from her name when she became famous.....

Here's what it says in this book "De Som Dro - Utandringa fra Melhus" by Åsmund Snøfugl.

Omkring 1920 ble de to gift.

##################

The movie actress Arlene Dahl is the granddaughter of Anne Brubakk, who emigrated from Melhus 1887.
Arlene Dahl had her first film role in 1946, and starred in numerous films over the next 15-20 years.
Her mother is of Brubakk-family. Her name was Ingeborg and the daughter of Anne Brubakk (b. 1867) and Johan Svangrønning from Buvika.
Anne emigrated to America in 1887, her father Johan emigrated in 1884.
Johan lived for some years in British Columbia, where he was occupied in forestry. He later came to Minnesota.
It was probably there where he met Anne Brubakk. They married and they settled in Minneapolis, where Johan started up a wagon man business.
Johan simplified his lastname Svangrønning to Svang and later Americanized it to Swaan. They had three children; Andreas, Ingvar and Ingeborg.
Anne Brubakk came home to Melhus to visit in 1897. Her son Ingvald was with her on the trip. He was only five years old then.
During her stay in Norway Anne lived mostly on Bleke, with her cousin Anne Brækken. That's where Ingeborg was born.
In the Norwegian community in Minneapolis met Ingeborg, as a young lady, Rudolf Dahl.
He had his family from the Bergen area. He was a craftsman. The two married around 1920.
Some years later the young couple got the daughter Arlene. She was born in Minneapolis on Aug. 11, 1926.
In a picture taken of her and her grandfather, Johan Svangrønning when Arlene was a five or six years, and which was sent home to relatives in Trøndelag, we see a nice little girl that safely keeps her grandfather's hand.
Arlenes mother, Ingeborg became ill and died early, before the daughter Arlene reached adulthood.

Hi,

Great work for two locations in Norway for Arlene Dahl. Here is the Minnesota Deaths and Burials database at www.familysearch.org for a Lars Modahl who died in Hubbard County, Minnesota:

Good question.

Arlene's father Rudolph is born in Minnesota by Swedish born parents, so I doubt he is the link to Modahl.
The Sortomme-Goodspeed Family Tree at ancestry.com have more information about Rudolph S. Dahl.
Sorry, wrong Rudolph...

If there is a family connection, it must be through Arlene's mother Ingeborg Swan.
Could it be just an urban legend?

There were two Rudolph Dahls born in Minnesota about 1893. Be very careful that you are looking at the correct one.

There appears to be inconsistency in the census information that is given on the federal censuses. Marilyn should obtain the birth certificates, death certificates, state censuses and other documents to try to work out the preponderance of the evidence. If the Arlene Dahl connection is at all important then it should be started with looking at her actual birth certificate, her entry in the 1930 US federal census, etc.

And this Rudolph S Dahl was the son of John and Ingaborg and in 1900 living in Lyon, Cottonwood, Minnesota. And in the post of Jackie Lars Modal also lived in Lyon, Cottonwood, Minnesota. So perhaps the posters husband's cousin is Arlene Dahol but a different Arelen Dahl than the famous movie actress.

Hmmm...., we're getting closer...
Here is Jacob Dahl (Arlene Dahl's paternal g.father) in census-1865 for Bakke, Vest-Agder... the same place as the Modahl family...
The Dahl (Øxendal) family emigrated about 1867, and can be found in Lucas, Lyon, Minnesota in census-1880.

I think this could be the connection:

Tonnette Larsdatter Modal, parents: Lars A. Sigbjørnsen Modal & Berte Torkildsdatter Modal
Lars A. Sigbjørnsen Modal, parents: Sigbjørn Sigbjørnsen & Siri Pedersd.

Arlene Dahl, parents Rudolph Dahl & Ingeborg Swan
Rudolph S Dahl, parents Jacob H Dahl & Ingeborg Dahl
Jacob H Dahl, parents Hans Pedersen Øxendal & Anne Olsdatter

I think Hans Pedersen & Siri Pedersdatter could be siblings.
Hans is born about 1816 in Bakke parish. Siri is born ab. 1818, same place.

Hans Pedersen Øxendal - Siri Pedersdatter - siblings
Jacob Dahl - Lars Sigbjørnsen Modal - first cousin
Rudolph Dahl - Tonnette Larsdatter Modal - second cousins
Arlene Dahl - children of Tonette Modahl - third cousins

Yes, now that we know enough we can find that others have also developed the family tree. The Bergelin/Gryde Family Trees among others on Ancestry.com lists the mother and father as Peter Hansen Oksendal and Karen Larsdatter Espetveit. The Tree also has a large number of other children other than Hans and Siri. The Tree also carries the family line further back in time for Karen Larsdatter Espetveit.
