Hello everybody
I,m looking for any information about my greatgrandad Emil Hansen. I think he was born in Bodo on the 20 of May 1874,he had a sister named ragna and a brother named Haus?. His father's name was laurz olai magnus Hansen and i think they lived somewhere on the Loften islands although the name Kristiania keeps cropping up in letters i have(but their written in Norwegian so i can't figure much out from them)
I know Emil Hansen worked as a ships carpenter and he was working on s.s eskimo when it was captured by the germans and he spent two years as a prisoner of war in Altdamm. I have discharge papers from all the ships he worked on and i know he married an English girl ( Mary Jane Hanson) who was from Hull in Yorkshire. I,ve tried a few genealogy sites but can't seem to find any trace of Emil or Laurz. Emil Hansen became a british national and i was wondering if this would have affected any records of him in Norway? Also does anyone know where i could find a postcard of ss Eskimo and what steps i could take next to find out about my norwegian ancestors? Any information whatsoever will be greatly appreticated as i am at a complete stop at the moment. Thank you

Hi,
I would guess this must be your Emil Hansen i the 1875 census: click here
His father is fisherman Lauritz Hansen, b. 1860, and mother is Karen Olsdatter, b. 1855. The family are lodgers at the farm "Skotnæs" in Buksnes, Lofoten.
Note: "Edvard Ingebrigtsen" is a servant, and not a family member...

Hi again,
here is Lauritz Hansen in the 1900 census: click here
The 1875 census says birthyear=1850, this one says 1849, but it's the same person.
His wife reads "Luffa Olsdatter". It could be that he is married a 2nd time, but I would guess Luffa is a nickname for his wife [Karen]. The age and birthplace are the same. I've never heard the name Luffa in Norway before, and the census shows that the name was almost only used in the Lofoten area...
Children:
  • Iver Hansen, male, resident, son, not married, fisherman, born 1883 in Buksnes

  • Hans Hansen, male, resident, son, not married, born 1891 in Buksnes

  • Agnar Hansen, male, resident, son, not married, born 1896 in Buksnes

  • Hansine Hansen, female, resident, daughter, born 1888 in Buksnes

  • Ragna Hansen, female, resident, daughter, born 1898 in Buksnes

  • Hagbard Hansen, male, living in Namsos or Trondhjem, son, not married, seaman in sheltered waters, born 1879 in Buksnes

Here is Emil in the samme census: click here
He is a fisherman, and the family position says "fl", which means "lodger, but belonging to family". It could be that Emilie Hansdatter is his aunt, ie. that she is sister of Lauritz Hansen.

We do have a picture of the Eskimo on the S/S Eskimo web page which you could just copy and print, it is an old postcard. You do not say if you are looking for an old postcard or a copy, old postcards of the Wilson Line ships are not so easy to find. I have in my collection two different cards showing the S/S Eskimo, the one seen on the web page is one of them. I have been offering copies of some of the cards in my collection for a small fee to help support the NorwayHeritage web site, like seen here, but have not bothered to offer many them, as the demand has not been that great. If that is what you are looking for I could always arrange it for one of the Eskimo cards.

Yes that would be brilliant. Are these copies made on card so they look like postcards?I would like a copy of both your s.sEskimo cards if possible. Please let me know how much these would cost. Thank you

No, they are not on card but on thick paper. I have blown the size up to about 10 x 6.5 in. + margin
to make them suitable for framing at the cost of 14.50$ (postage included) each. That is about the maximum size to not loose too much of the quality, as the originals are old and mailed postcards. I could get both the cards copied in a smaller size to fit on one sheet of paper at the same cost. Let me know what you desire. You can e-mail me if you want further information.

Hi again,
this must be Lauritz in the 1865-census: click here
This time he is 19, which indicate he is born around 1847...
Normally in the 1865-census, you will have to calculate 1866 minus age to get the birthyear.
His mother is widow Christiane Jørgensdatter, so Lauritz' father (prob Hans as first name) is dead.
From the census; Lauritz has 3 brothers (Arnt, Haagen and Frantz), and a sister (Hilde).

The farm is Skotnæs, and in the 1875-census, the owner is the oldest son Arnt, so Lauritz is then a lodger at his brothers' house.
Regarding the "Emile Hansdatter", it could be that Christiane Jørgensdatter is pregnant with her at the time of 1865-census...
