There's noone by the name John Flaete/Flaethe registered at the Ellis Island database.
Did you misspell?

It looks however to be a variant of the farmname Flæte. In that case he would most likely be from sogn & fjordane county, and he should be in the list of emigrants leaving Bergen.

"High-rank possibilities:"
John Johnsen Flæthe b. 1880, emigrated April 30th, 1901.
John J. Flate arrived at Ellis Island on May 11, 1901. The ship SS Campania sailed from Liverpool on May 4th, 1901. Destination is hard to read, but it looks like uncle jhs(?) johnson, lake smillo?? da

Johannes Hermundsen Flæte (ell Haukaas) b. 1855, emigrated April 6th, 1880 (before E.I. was opened)

Flåten, Flæten variants:
Johan Andreas M Nielsen Flaaten b. 1855
Johannes Johannesen Flaaten b. 1846
John Endresen Flaaten b. 1866
Johannes Christoffer Nilsen Flæten b. 1879
John Nilson (Fleten) b.1899
Johan Bernhard Andersen (Flatø) b. 1889
John Knutsen (Flåten) b. 1876
John Nilsen (Fleten) b. 1879
John Simpson (Flaten) b. 1872

Changing of names at Ellis Island is a popular myth.
