Gulbrand Gulbrandsen born in Kongsberg (Gransherad) on March 18. 1856, married to Maren Karine Mathiassen, b on January 28. 1856 in Vaale, Vestfold County, Norway. They emigrated to Amerika between 1882 and 1884, They had 2 sons in Norway, Godtfred, born on July 18. 1870 and Kristian, born on March 3. 1882 - so they left after his birth, They lived in Holmestrand from 1881 till 1882. I can not find them in any passengerlists. They had possibly 7 more children in the US, probably in ND. I would like to find living family descending from these immigrants - but how can I find them?

There is a Gotfred(Godfred) Gilbertson in a 1930 North Dakota census but he was born about 1881, and emigrated in 1884. He was 28 when he married Bertha who was 19. They have 10 children.
Wesley E. age 19.
Raymond L. age 17.
Donald L. age16.
Elneon M. age 13.
Loyed C. age 11.
Earl G. age 9.
Walter R. age6.
Howard E. age 5.
Gladys B. age 2 7/12.
Arubed L. age 6/12.
There is a Krist Gilbertsen in the 1910 census for South Dakota. Krist's age is 29, born about 1881, immigrated 1882, single, and a roomer(lodger).
Their parents, I have assumed, are living in North Dakota, and are in the 1910 and 1920 census, as Gilbert and Mary Gilbertson.
The 1910 census includes they had 10 children, 9 are living.
Gilbert, age 54, born in Norway, immigrated 188?
Mary, age 53, born in Norway, immigrated 1884.
George, age 24, born in Minnesota
Edward, age 11, born in North Dakota
Gunda, age 13, born in North Dakota
The 1920 Census lists another son.
Olaf, age 35 born in Minnesota.
Gilbert and Mary were both Naturalized citizens in 1886.
There is more available for Marcus and George and Krist. If you need a little more information let us know.

Thank you. I believe that these are the right family. I am now trying to find living Gilbertson. I have much data here for the Norwegian part, but have not managed to find their departure yet. There are several Godfred Gilbertson and Godfred Gulbrandsen, but I think the one mentioned above must be the right one.

Sorry - I just saw that the birthdate for Godfred is wrong - 1880 is the right year. My fault!

Hi, Gulbrand was born in Gransherad Marsh 18 and christened in Kongsberg Church June 20 (1856). Church records online Kongsberg 1859-1875, Confirm Oct. 8. 1871, page 408, nr 26, Gulbrand Gulbrandsen Kasa(Gransherad) Parents: Gulbrand Gulbrandsen Kasa and Gunnild Olsdatter. Two of Gulbrands Godparents was Tone Olsdatter Rønningsdalen and Ole Olsen Narverud. Gulbrand seems to have vanished from both Kongsberg and Holmestrand without been mentioned in the Migration records.

I found a notice in the churchbook for Vaale when they moved to Holmestrand, but they are not registered into Holmestrand. I do think that they should leave from Oslo, but there might be other possibilities. I keep writing english, in hope that relatives might see my questions.

Turid, My name is Erik Keethe, and i am a grandson of Walter R. Gilbertson (in the list of children of Gotford(spelled many different ways) Gilbertson). I had hit a dead end researching family history, and the name change from Guldbrandsen to Gilbertson might just be why! My grandfather grew up in Hillsboro, North Dakota, and now lives in the Sacramento, California area. Feel free to send me an email if you wish to discuss our possible family relationship

Bertha, Gotfred's wife's maiden name was Sorum--appears there is a story about the family in the 1976 Traill County history.

| My paternal Grandmother's family came from Norway. At least my great grandpa for sure, not sure about my great grandma. My grandmother was born in 1920 and was their oldest child. Their names were Hans and Ida Gilbertson. I do not know what yr they immigrated. |

Sylvia, this should rightfully be a new post, but since it is started we will run with it for awhile.
If Jackie has the right person, his WWI draft card lists his birth as August 14th 1897 and his and his fathers birthplace as Vardu, Norway. Could be Vardø.
