Hi! Haven't been on here for a little while. I need help, please.

Jacob B Sundem b Dec 1862 Norway, died 5 May 1923 in Minnesota. Emigrated about 1864.

Father is Nils J Sundem b abt 1830 and mother is Petronille b abt 1841....both in Norway.

I did find Sundem Farms, but I couldn't find Jacob's birth record.

If anyone can help, I'd sure appreciate it! Thanks!!

Tami

Jacob must have travelled with someone since he was only 2 years when he emigrated - do you know who?

At the age of 2, the most common travelling companion was a parent...

Did Jacob have any siblings? And where is he in 1880? Minnesota? And about the lastname "Sundem", are you sure about the spelling?

This looks like an interesting family, but there are several things that doesn't match up..., they are living at a farm called Sønmør, and are still in Norway as of January 1st, 1866...

The ages for Nils, Pettronelle and Jacob fit though. They married in Tolga, Hedmark on 11 JUL 1862. This Jacob is born on Sønmør on 01 MAR 1863.

You found Sundem farms... where? I see at least three different spellings for Sundem in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US census enumerations - which spelling comes closest to the original?
Where did you find Jacob and/or his parents living in the 1880 census?

The family I linked to above (from Sønmør, Tolga, Hedmark) emigrated from Trondheim on May 26 1866, arriving Quebec July 18 1866, on board the bark Vidfarne.

Niels Jacobsen Sønmoen (35)
Petronelle Knudsdatter Sønmoen (25)
Inger Jacobsdatter Sønmoen (8)
Jacob Nielsen Sønmoen (3)

This looks like them in St. Olaf, Otter Tail, Minnesota, census-1880.

The Sundem farm(s) are in Nord-Aurdal, Oppland.

They did go to St Olaf, Minnesota. I got everything after they were in Minnesota...I just needed the info in Norway. When I was looking in the census to see where the farm was located, I did find Nord-Aurdal, however, I couldn't find him in the records, so I thought he must have been elsewhere? It looks like they left from Hedmark?

Ok, Jan Peter. It does look as the family you found fits. I was going by the birthdate on the 1900 census (which I know is not always right haha). I could not find his birthdate anywhere else. Appreciate your help!! At least I can fill in last names and birthdates!! No wonder I couldn't find them in the 1880 census! I didn't know what the farm name was in Norway, so nothing looked right!! Now I know!!

Thanks for the help!!

Hopkins, yes, there are different spellings that I found too, Sundem is the correct one!! Sundem is what their name changed to by the time it came to the grandchildren.

It's not impossible, but maybe a bit strange that they should change the lastname from Sønmør to Sonmor to Sundem...?

Do you recognize any of Jacob's siblings?

Inger b.1858 (possible cousin or aunt)
Ole b. 1862
Knut b.1870
Martin b.1874
Nils b.1875
Maria b.1879

Can Nils & "Teffenille" (Petronelle) Sonmor from census-1880 be found as Sundem in St. Olaf, Otter Tail, Minnesota, census-1900?

I can't find them after the 1885 Minnesota Census, so I'm pretty much assuming they died before 1900. Yes, Jan Peter, those names are familiar and they are in other census after 1880. The main one is Jacob who is the one that is the grandparent of my 2nd cousin's wife. I'm only putting in the one that connects the families. Otherwise, I'd have tons of names!! I thank everyone for their help. Jo Anne, once I got the help finding out where they were actually from, I was able to find them! Thank you!!

Hi Tami
Rather old thread, I know, but it seems you received no reply related to birth and background of Jacob Sundem?
If your quest is still ongoing, I will be able to provide the complete story.

Kind regards,
Erik
