I am trying to locate family in either Oslo or Hellesylt. My grandfathers name was Edwin Helseth , he had a sister Anna Helseth. Their Parent came from somewhere in Norway. Their names : Ole and Signe Helseth. I found a picture of them in my fathers belongings. If you can help me locate and information or distant relatives it would be wonderful. They settled in Minnesota USA

Do you have any addition information on Ole? Birth and immigration dates would help.

The 1900 U.S. Census shows an Ole Helseth (b. 10/1849 in Norway), who immigrated 1n 1880. He lived in Norwegian Grove, Otter Tail county, Minnesota. He was married to an Eline(sp?) (b. 12/1851 in Norway), who immigrated in 1881. They were married in about 1881. Edwin shows as a son that was born in 11/1891. No Anna was listed, but there a total of 5 children (3 boys and 2 girls) in 1900 that range in age from 21 to 4.

Ole showed up in the 1910 U.S. Census at the same location and identified as Ole G. Helseth.

Edwin ultimately appeared to immigrate to Montana?

Is this the correct family? If so, I can provide some U.S. details that may be clues to the actual Norwegian home of Ole.

Ole Helseth had children named Edwin Albin, Anna Christina?, Edor and Emil. I know this is fact. The address in Minneapolis I have is 68 East flats Minneapolis MN. I have know way of knowing any birth dates of Sine or Sena Helseth who was his wife. Another spelling for her might be Signe. Thanks

Thanks Les.

Since Emil looks to be their oldest child, chances are that Ole & Sina married in the US. What does their year of immigration say?

The Norwegian records are more readily traceable than Swedish. If you could find more information about Sira and her brother John Erickson, her family records may be available. Sira's full name from her marriage records would help.

John is more than likely a shortened name from Johan or Johannes. Searching for Sira and John Erickson has not turned up any good records for me.

Here is some 1930 census info for a John Erickson, and his wife Agnes.

Name: John Erickson
Home in 1930: Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota
Age: 71
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1859
Year of Immigration: 1890 Naturalized
Birthplace: Norway Sweden is actually written for him
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's Name: Agnes From Norway and her parents.
Race: White
Occupation: Tailor

Household Members: Name Age
John Erickson 71 First married at age 25.
Agnes Erickson 56 First married at age 40.
Two lodgers were living in their house.

I think this is John's second marriage. Minnesota Historical Society should be able to help you find their marriage records.

Could be your genealogy background is Swedish!!!

There are a lot of John Ericksons living in Hennepin county for this time period, so some thorough research will have to be done to establish a correct relationship.

I looked at the 1910 census for the Helseps and John Erickson is still living with them, but the year of immigration has changed to 1885, and he was Naturalized. His birthplace is Norway, and was a widower.

The 1920 census has a John Erickson, age 60, Head of Household, Widower, Immigrated 1885, Naturalized 1897, living on Hayes St., 9th Ward.

Sina's year of immigration is noted as 1890. She has not been naturalized.

A death certificate for Ola, Sina, and John could provide some background information to search the Norsk records. Also Naturalization papers for Ola and John should be available.
