Hi,
I found a Anne E. Ohnstad that was born Aug. 20, 1931 and died Jan. 23, 1988 in Hennepin County on the Minnesota death index online. Don't know if this is the one you are looking for. Can also check on Ancestry.

Hi Wally,

If it was about 1904 & later, try at :

www.mnhs.org

There are 5 Ann, Anne, Anna Ohnstads there in various places in Minnesota.

Hi Wally,

Try at www.dalbydata.com for Ann Onstad. There are two there that spelling whose deaths fit approximately.

Good Luck.

Jackie, Thanks a million. It seems in Norweigen language Ohnstad could also be used for Onstad.
Now if I could only finally find what happened thier very young children after she died.

Hi Wally,

So one of the various Anns turned out to be the right one? The children's father's name was ?? The children's names were?

At the www.mnhs.org site you may search for both deaths and births by the mother's maiden name (this case Langland?) and see if anything turns up. Or were the children adopted out? If they were adopted you could always try a search for the exact birthdate at www.rootsweb.com version of the Social Security Death Index under advanced search.

Good Luck!

Jackie, Many thanks for your help. Both Ellend and Annie came from Norway.
Together the couple had 6 children, 3 of which survived: Oden H Dec. 18, 1895, Arthur P, also known as Palmer Arthur, Oct. 1897, and Almer, also known as Elmer who was born on 1899.
For whatever reason, the children were either adopted out or farmed out.

Hi Wally,

Palmer and Elmer both ended up in California, literally and figuratively--in the death records index at www.rootsweb.com
Search for Ohnstad and then look at the California death index listings.

If the family still lived in Albert Lea, Minnesota when Ann died, there appears to be 3 or 4 congregations of Lutherans which might have records of her funeral, provided there was a funeral:
Albert Lean evangelisk lutherske menighet, Trefoldigheds (Trinity) menighet, and one simply calle "Albert Lea Menighet".

This may list the obit of the brother Odin /Oden:

http://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Search.aspx

input Ellend Ohnstad in the death records search, click on the magnifying glass and view as a dvju or click to make jpeg. Big file, long time to load but verrrry interesting.

Hilsen,

One final question, I looked at some doccuments I had and found that my grandmother, Mathilda Iverson, at that time married an Allen J Ohnstad in Owatona, Minnesota.
Would the English name of Allen be equivalent to the Norweigen name of Ellened?

I think Ellened/Ellend is americanized.
Could perhaps be coming from Erlend or Elling.
Most ot the emigrants kept the initials if they changed name.

Ohnstad farms seems to be situated in Aurland, Sogn og Fjordane. All other "onstad-farms" are spelled without the "h".
Both Elling and Ellend is found on the Ohnstad farm in the 1801 census.
In 1865 there are 9 Ohnstad farms in Aurland. Elling Johannesen is there and Ellend Jensen also.
Any connection with Allen J. Ohnstad?

Einar
