I have searched many ship passenger lists in order to find any transportation information for my g-g-grandfather. I know that passenger lists weren't required in 1856, so it is probable that his ship will not be known. I am trying to write a family history and will probably have to use a ‘generalized trip’ based on other histories. If you can fill in any blanks, it would be greatly appreciated. Information known: Erick Nielson on Stedje and his wife, Kari Johannesdatter, with two children, Niels and Jens, emigrated in 1856 from Fosshaugen (page 353). What I am trying to find out is the date of emigration. Where did they probably go? Bergen? How long would they wait for a ship? From Bergen would they go to England or sail directly from a Norwegian port? Did most immigrants at this time go to Quebec? I would appreciate any and all information or supposition that you may have. Thanks, Luella

Hi.
From Sogndal the natural dep. port was Bergen. The emigration record tells they left Sogndal April 7. 1856. From Bergen to Quebeck we have following emigrant ships from 1856:
- Apollo Mai 5 arrived Quebeck June 30
- Columbus Mai 5 via Bremerhaven Germany arr July 2 or 7 with 137 passengers.
- Hakon Adelsten Mai 5. arr. July 12
- Hebe Mai 12. arr. June 14
- Juno April 30 arr. July 5
- Jĝrgen Brunchorst Mai 6. arr, June 17 with 289 passengers
- Vikingen Mai 5. arr. June 30.

Perhaps this was common after the emigrants had landed in Quebec, see less than 2 inch down.
Heading Chicago 20. 1857 (Norwegian passenger on ship Hebe)
....landing in Quebec, we were kindly and in best manner recieved by the Grand Trunk Railway Company and thence conveyed through the country.....see here
