Hi.
I am helping a lady.
Mari Andersdatter Høvremoen (Høvre) born on Skiager 1857 in Skjåk parish, Oppland county, left a young son born 1880 out of wedloc, Erik Pedersen, when she emigrated 1884 on ship Angelo, dest was Eau Claire Wisconsin.

The family that never heard of her has a photography of Mari taken about 1890 in Eau Claire.

1902 her son recorded as Erik Pedersen Skamser emigrated on ship Angelo, dest. Wisc. most likley to look for his mother, nobody from this family knows if he found her.
Erik Pedersen Skamser returned to Norway before 1910 when he takes over his fathers farm.

1890 is of course a bad year for census data in the US so I tried 1900. There are no single ladies that fit the above description but that is not surprising. Using filter of born in Norway 1857 +/-2 years and immigrated in 1884 +/- 2 years and living in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin turns up 138 people both men and women. Can not filter by sex. Of those 138 only one person comes close to the criteria with added filter of having been married after reaching US. That is

Name: Martha Steenberg
Home in 1900: Eau Claire Ward 7, Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Age: 43
Birth Date: Mar 1857
Birthplace: Norway
Race: White
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: 1884
Relationship to Head of House: Wife
Father's Birthplace: Norway
Mother's Birthplace: Norway
Mother: number of living children: 2
Mother: How many children: 2
Spouse's name: Lewie
Marriage Year: 1887
Marital Status: Married
Years Married: 13
Residence : Eau Claire City, Eau Claire, WisconsinWisconsin

Now we are probably a long ways from completing a search but this is a start.

Here is a candidate that needs further investigation.

Name: John Johnson Koien
Spouse: Mari Andersdatter
Marriage Date: 10 Jun 1886
County: Jackson
State: WI

Jackson County is adjacent to Eau Claire County

The number of records for the name Koien is very sparse but here is one also from Jackson County.

thank you all for helping me with this topic.
Yes Peder, the 1884 emigration is Mari Andersdatter Skiager, but the age is wrong, she was born 1857.

The 1884 wedding in Jacson County Wisc. seems promising Anton.
John Johnsen Koien´s origin was most likley Norwegian.
The photo from about 1890 could have be taken in Eau Claire during a visit.
She had a sister (I do not have her name, sorry) living in Eau Claire and several from Skamser,Erik Pedersen´s family, also lived in Eau Claire.

Since her son Erik Pedersen left 1902 I assume his mother still lived, people wrote letters so that one knew about each other.

Thanks again.

Skamser is an unusul name and there is only one family in the 1900 US Census living in Eau Claire County. I have listed them below. Do you think they are the relatives of Eric Pedersen.

Hi, and thank you.
You are right about the name Skamser is very unusual, even in Norway, it only exist in Skiaker in Skjåk (and USA)
This is Erik Pedersens relatives on his fathers side.

I says Mary was kicked out of Skjåk and forced to leave her little son behind her so one must assume her relationship with the Skamser family was perhaps not the best.

That is correct Peder.
Erik is also registered on Skamser in 1900, temporary living on Nyhys.
Rønnaug Paulsdatter Skamser b. 1832 "Føderaadskone" former owner of Skamser with free supplies as long as she lived from the owner (her son) was Erik´s granmother, his father Peder Pedersen´s mother. The other persons are renters.
To me it seems like maybe she raised Erik after his mother emigrated.

I wonder if Mari Andersdatter b. 1857 is in the US 1900 census for Wisc or 1890 if that exist.

The strange part is that I spent quite some time looking at both the 1900 US Census and the 1905 Wisconsin Census for a family that would match the data for Mari using birth year, immigration year and could not find her anywhere. I suppose she could have died just before the 1900 US Census. There is a real gap in the US between the 1880 US Census and the 1900 US Census that is hard to fill.

I am please that the people listed in the 1900 US Census of George Skamser are releted to Peter. This family is contained in a Ancestry.com Family Tree of Phil Skamser as well as several others. I have e-mailed two of the Famly Tree owners through Ancestry.com to see if they have any knowledge of Eric Pedersen Skamser. It is a long shot but worth a try. I pulled this bit of information from the Famly Tree of Phil Skamser.
