I will take a rain check on responding to the Danish John Petersen proposal. Too early to draw conclusions.

Find-a-Grave memorials created by the descendant who first started this thread list Minnie as Minnie Peterson Lutz. Seemingly Peter J Lutz 1872-1953 was a second husband. In 1910 her father John age 60, born Norway, lives with the family. In 1920 Minnie's parents are listed born Norway, same as John in 1920 census with Florence):

1910 census
John Peterson age 60, born Norway, immigrated 1880, naturalized
John's daughter Anna Peterson 13
Minnie and husband Knute Olson b abt 1873 Norway
link

1920 census
Minnie's parents listed as born Norway
link

1930 census
Minnie's father listed as born Norway, mother born Denmark
link

1940 census
link

Minnie death record,
parents not named in this transcription:
1967

But where the children are in 1885 is a mystery.
These Minnesota counties are at the southeast corner of Minnesota;
maybe they are in Iowa or Wisconsin? or they were christened with different names, later changed by the Martins?

Yes, that notation for John's second wife was posted earlier, and also posted is John's Find-a-Grave memorial with those dates.

It would be great to add information we haven't examined, such as the 1900 census for John.

Even more, we need someone with a subscription to Ancestry to go through the area churchbooks for John's first marriage and baptisms of the children from that marriage. Maybe that will fall to BCady, some day when she has more time for this project.

The original opening statement says the children were all born in Rushmore, Fillmore, Minnesota.

I searched Norway Digital Archives offerings for Minnesota church records and didn't recognize this family in any record that turned up.

Thank you - all of you - for your assistance. I will continue to explore all these leads and let you know, based on verbal, family history, how it all comes together. Great adventure as a history sleuth. I anxiously look for more of your suggestions.

Did I hear my name called? I did a little searching in the ELCA without much luck. There is a John Peterson found in the late 1879 and 1880 records for the Rushford Lutheran Church. He is married to a Lina Gunnarson or Gundersen. They are listed for the baptism of three children. Here is the first one.

Name: Mathilde Karoline Pedersen
Baptism Age: 0
Record Type: Baptism
Birth Date: 19 Jul 1879
Baptism Date: 10 Aug 1879
Baptism Place: Rushford, Minnesota, USA
Father: John Pedersen
Mother: Lina Gunnarsd
Church Name: Rushford Lutheran Church
Church Location: Rushford, Minnesota

The other two are Hjalma Alvida bap Mar 11, 1883 and Ludvig Gynter bap 21 June 1885.

Two children were confirmed

Name: Tom Helmer Pederson
Baptism Age: 0
Record Type: Confirmation
Birth Date: 21 Mar 1884
Birth Place: Rushford
Baptism Date: 30 Mar 1884
Confirmation Date: 13 Nov 1899
Father: John Pederson
Mother: Lina Hansd Lea
Church Name: Rushford Lutheran Church
Church Location: Rushford, Minnesota

And a Olga Lavin in 1894.

Just does not seem a likely candidate.

Haha, good to know when I call for help, you come!

BCady, a question for you:

What is your reason for saying John's wife was named Ane Wilhelmine Nelsen? Did you see that on a family tree? Or do you have another source?

Because we are searching for the parents of people who are personally remembered by living descendants posting info, it is important that we listen to what you say. If Florence told you her mother's name, that carries weight. If some family member grabbed that name at random out of the Minnesota Marriage Index, that carries very little weight.

"Consider the source" is highly relevant in genealogy. Stating the source of a "fact" is part of the package when the fact (or supposed fact) is mentioned.

Well, that's not the right John. Thanks lynn.

To understand where I'm coming from, take another look at the Norwegian John
in 1905:

1905
Winona
John Peterson age 57 born in Norway (about 1848)
Maggie age 44 born in Norway (born about 1861)
Annie 7 born Minnesota
Milton 5 b Minnesota
Olga 2 b Minnesota

Now consider the Danish John in 1905:

1905
Winona
John Peterson age 65 born in Denmark (about 1840)
Hanna age 60 born in Sweden (born about 1845)
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SPQK-PS6

1900 census for the Danish John:

1900
Winona
John Petersen age 63 born Denmark (born about 1837)
Hanna age 59 born Sweden
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M9QH-FLJ

It is two different John Petersons.
