Alright now, back to ground zero. My great-grandfather is John L. Bolstad born in 1889 and died in 1936! Found him at findagrave.com Now that his birth year is clear, considering I have solid info on him now, any help would be appreciated. God bless.

John L. Bolstad was married as John Larson to Verna May Hollingsworth(Turner) on 14 of May 1925 in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. He was listed in his marriage certificate and license as residing in the Spokane, Washington area.

Is there a John Larson/Larsen living on a Bolstad farm in Norway before 1912? Don't know where to look.

Any help to fill in the blanks would be appreciated.

On the Bolstad farm in Ulvik, Hordaland, there is a possibility which I referred to back in August.

Christening record #15, 1886
Source: Hordaland county, Ulvik in Ulvik, Parish register (official) nr. B 1 (1878-1897), Birth and baptism records 1886, page 45.

Census-1900 for Bolstad, Ulvik, Hordaland

Census-1910

Johannes Larsen Bolstad (25) left Bergen on Nov 6th, 1911. He was headed for Northwood, North Dakota.

What I can't understand is that he is married to Anbjørg and have a little girl in the 1910-census, and are emigrating as single/unmarried in 1911...

If we think about the spelling changes that happen when emigrants "Americanized" their names -- Bolstad might have been spelled a little differently.

Like the Johan Larsen of the Bjølstad farm in Kråkerøy, Østfold, Norway in the 1910 Norwegian census ---

One of the easiest ways to search in the Norwegian census when you don't know WHERE you want to look are the NHDC census databases. They have instructions right on the website.

I found a possible father to John but don't know how to find him. Ingliby Larson, living in Tromso, Bakkeby, is listed as the father of one John Larson residing in Spokane, Washington in 1913. I cannot figure out if Ingliby is the correct spelling. This John Larson was entering the United States by way of Oroville, Washington and was residing in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. Not sure if this is my John Larson, but John Larson Bolstad was residing in Spokane in 1925 and was allegedly already in the U.S. by 1910 (1930 U.S. census) or 1912 (according to family story). Help please.

I have fantastic news. Just received in the mail the death certificate for John Larsen Bolstad. He was born 15 Sep 1889, and passed away on 23 Aug 1936 in California. His parents were Lars J. Bolstad and Anna. Any help with look-ups would be appreciated. Thank you and God bless.

Michelle

P.S. A special thank you to the ladies at Paradise Genealogical Society in Paradise, California.

It has to be the one from Ulvik in Hordaland!
See posting above. He is born 15-Sep-1886. Parents are Lars Johannessen Bolstad and Anna Torleifsdatter.

Yes :)

Something interesting; in 1910 he is married to Anbjørg and they have a babygirl Anna Marta born July 7th, 1910.

He emigrated a year later, on Nov 6th, 1911.

I found this about his wife:

Ambjørg Olsdtr. Kvelprud 1883-
Married to Johannes Larsson Bolstad, Ulvik. Children: Anna Marita 1910- see grandchildren
Ambjørg and Johannes got divorced. Ambjørg studied at Elverum "teacher-seminar" in 1902 and (later) travelled to America. Most likely married to ... Høsttvedt, Numedal. (1799) 1988.
In "NU" from 1913 Mr. Mehlum wrote that Ambjørg Bolstad born Kvelprud had started a cafe at Velta by Nes station.

Children:
Marit Johannesdtr. Kvelprud Stølen, born 07 June 1910 - d. 1973. = Anna Marita.
Married 1933 to Olav Olson Stølen. See Skjervheimshagen.
Parents Johannes L Bolstad og Ambjørg Olsdtr. Kvelprud.

Ambjørgs father Ola Person Kvelprud (24.11.1844-1907) lived in America 1873-1876. He came home and ran a general store in Oslo until he became bankrupt in 1893.
He later moved home to Ål and started a new general store named 'O. P. Quelprud'.
He had interest in politics, and was one of the founders of the worker's society in Oslo.

Marit Stølen (07Jun1910 - 02Jun1973) (John Larsen Bolstad's daughter) is buried at Ål church in Hallingdal, Buskerud.
Olav Stølen (10Sep1909 - 23May2001), buried at the same place.
Just next to where they lived, there is a man named Olav Stølen b. 1968 living today. He runs a woodware named Stølen trevare in the town (Ål). Possibly a grand-son, named after his g.father?
If that's the case, he would be your 2nd cousin!

Jan Peter~
Where did you find this info on Ambjørg Olsdatter?

I'm not having much success locating Lars Johannessen Bolstad. I see he was on Bogne farm in 1886 in Ulvik. I wonder where he and his family were before Johannes L Bolstad was born? And also for Lars' wife Anna Torleifsdatter: where is her family? I found Hallingdal as her birthplace. Can't seem to pin down the extended family. Once again I ask for help. Thank you.
