Would someone be so kind as to translate the 20 De 1799 entry from this page for me:

Source information: Aust-Agder county, Tromøy in Tromøy, Parish register (official) nr. A 2 (1773-1808), Marriage records 1800, page 208-209.

Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=9844&idx_id=9844&uid=ny&idx_side=-107

Permanent imagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20070614640467.jpg

It's the marriage between Captain Andreas Hornbeck and Ingebor Marie Lillie.

Thanks so much in advance!

The record reads:
"Egtewied efter Kongebrew SkibsCapitain Andreas Horenbech i Barboe med Pigen Ingebor Marie Lillie, ibedem. Cautionisterne: Jacob Stiansen og Ole Nielsen fra Barboe."
Translated:
Married with Kings letter Marine Captain Andreas Horenbech in Barboe and the maiden Ingebor Marie Lillie, Barboe. Best men: Jacob Stiansen og Ole Nielsen fra Barboe.

Ingebor Marie Lillie (actually Lilliesdatter) was Andreas Hornbeks second wife, see 398660.

Sorry to bother you again.

In that census you sent me to (which is great! Thank you!), it lists Andreas as "Sadt skipper, giestgiver, og har lidt jordbrug."

I have roughly translated this to mean that he is a retired skipper, a giestgiver and does some farming. Is this correct?

If so, can you clarify what a Giestgiver is for me? I found a very old reference to it in a book that says it is some kind of custom by which in order to act as a merchant in a district, one must "entertain all strangers at a fixed rate." I'm not entirely sure what that means. Does it mean that, in order to act as a merchant, you must act as a host to anyone and everyone?

Answer to your only question:
Giestgiver = gjestgiver means innkeeper, a gjestgiveri is an inn, but could also be a small hotel. Permit from the authorities to run a "gjestgiveri" was neccessary.

Ah! Thank you! It seems the old books I found translated this very differently. Thanks a bunch!

- since Lillie was an unusual name it was of interest to further searches.
Ingebor Marie - was baptized Ingeborg Maria, see next to the last record Aug 26 1781, her parents were Axel Lillie and Helje Susanne Sørensdatter, she should therefore have been Axelsdatter (Lilliesdatter is definitely wrong, sorry for that proposal).

Ingeborg Marias parents were married Oct 18 1770 in Arendal.

The family in 1801, see 398640.

Wow - you have been busy! This is wonderful - thank you! Do you have an index that you use, or do you just navigate the Arkivet at the speed of a light because you know the records well?

Andreas Hornebeks first wife, Oline Elisabeth Andersdatter, 45 years old, was burried Aug 3 1798, see 5th record from bottom of right page.

Based on the baptismal record July 30 1796 for their last son, Andreas Friderik, the witnesses indicate that the family was well to do. Andreas Friderik was baptized in Arendal church, the father is titled Mons. (monseigneur) Andreas Hornebek, some of the witnesses are also titled Mons. and Madm. (Madame).

Oline Elisabeth was baptized Sept 17 1758, see left page 4th from the top. Her father was Anders Olsen.

Could your Axel Lillie be a descendant from this Axel Lillie?

Thanks for that additional information on Oline! I had some of the dates from others' research, but not the actual records. Does Oline's birth record show her mother's name? It's so very hard to read.

I found the wiki article for Axel Lillie yesterday and was wondering the same thing. I will need to find a way to trace back in to earlier records, though to find the link to Sweden. It seems like a very strong possibility, given the uniqueness of the name. Would love to make that connection!

Mothers name was normally not stated in bapt records from that time. Wedding and census records would be the best possible search, but Anders Olsen was a name shared by many so to find the right one could be difficult.

Thanks for all those records!

I'm trying to find some clue as to who Axel was and/or where he came from, so I can scour through some records. I know it's unlikely that the Banns will have anything of use, but would you mind translating the record?

The record reads:
"Wi undertegnede ere answarlige for, at intet, hwerken mod Lowen eller Forordningen af 13 August 1695, er, som kand hindre det besluttede Ægteskab imellom den Welagtede Unge Karl Axel Lilie og den Gudelskende Pige Helje Susanne Sørensdatter, det wi som Cautionister wet og bewidne. Arendal den 15 Octobr 1770.
S.Christiansøn Erich Erichsen"

We, the undersigned, are responsible for that nothing neither in the law or regulation of Aug 13 1695 is that can prevent the marriage between the batchelor Axel Lilie and the maiden Helje Susanne Sørensdatter, this we know and witness. Arendal Oct 15 1770.
