The text below is from Skattematrikkelen 1647 for Telemark from page 12 under "Gjerpen"

I tried to transcribe some of it, but there are a few archaic words/spellings that are confusing me.

Thanks for helping me!

original text from book
Meen bessides aff lensmanden Simen Simensen frj. for schat.
schylder aarlingen 10 huder.
som hand och sine meddarffuinger
och sødschinde eir med bøxell.
med en wnderligende ødegaardt kaldes Buer.
Bunden bygger.

Meen (farm) request (?) for Sheriff Simen Simensen, freeholder, for yearly taxes owing on 10 hides on which he has [meddarffuinger? med deres svinger?] [och sødschinde?] with leasehold, with a curious abandonded Bubonic Plague farm called “Buer”
[bunden?] building

Meen is owned by sheriff Simen Simensen, free for taxes.
Owes 10 hides per year, which he, the other heirs and his siblings owns with lease, together with an uninhabited farm called Buer.
The farmer builds. (not certain of this last translation)

Thank you very much!

Simen Simensen's father (Simen Dyressen Meen) and grandfather (Dyre TJØSTELSEN Meen) "sold lumber" in another record so perhaps this has something to do with the building. The position of sheriff also seems to be a hereditary position, at least for this family, as every generation seems to have someone in this position.

The value of one hide in Telemark 1647;
8 goatskin or 12 calfskin.

In some areas in Telemark the value was converted to sheepskin, the value was then 8-12 skin.

In other counties grain was used, one barrel of grain was equal to one hide.

Hi Kåre
Thanks for this answer! This entire taxing system is very interesting.

I do have several other questions in order to understand this concept better because I see this term "hide" used frequently in older records.

When they were assessing value of "hides" does this mean:
(a) the amount of existing animals that the farm had, and they would be assessed tax only on these animals?
(b) the amount of excess animals that would be taxed. i.e. the farm would be allowed a certain amount of non-taxed property for basic subsistence and then the extra animals would be taxed
(c) or is it the amount of animals that a farm could support (which, depending on the land, would probably be very variable from farm to farm), for example the amount of grain/hay for only one animal that a farm could support. In this case, 10 hides would mean 120 calves or 80 goats which seems to be a lot for an area like Telemark.

Also, who assessed the value? Did a local person like a priest or sheriff have a way of assessing value for taxes that varied for each county, or was there a common assessment for the entire country that was used?

Thank you for any extra information you can give me!
