Very nice Jackie, This is probably the family in the 1900 Norwegian Census

http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/ftliste_e.aspx?ft=1900&knr=1718&kenr=002&bnr=0026&lnr=00

Looks like his name was Johan Bernt, see number 2

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6599&idx_id=6599&uid=ny&idx_side=-92

He left in 1902

Hey Anton, Ancestry has a passport application for a Bernt Rostad could you check it out. I'm curious about Anna Nelson the wife and I wonder if there is any information on her Norwegian origin in his passport ap or if there is a passport ap for her. If you could be so kind.

Here is the Passport Application that I think you are referring to, however I am not certain this is the same person as we ar researching. Birth date is wrong and he lists 1914 as his year of arrival. Anyway nothing is mentioned about a wife in the application. A Mrs. Elsie Engel vouches that she has know him for 9 years.

Bernt Rostad
in the U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925
Name: Bernt Rostad
Birth Date: 25 Mar 1895
Birth Place: Berketand, Norway
Age: 28
Passport Issue Date: 15 May 1923
Passport Includes a Photo: Yes
Residence: Chicago, Illinois
Father Name: Andr Rostad
Father's Birth Location: Norway
Father's Residence: Norway

RE: An obituary on Bernt Rostad was published in the Billings (Montana) Gazette on 12 Jan 1970 in which is birthplace is listed as Leksvik, Norway and his parents as Mr & Mrs Andrian Rostadsand.

Game, Set , Match.

So did birthdates match?
Winnett is where the family lived during that generation. It is about 94m or 152km from Billings MT and probably the closest city with a large hospital, so it sounds like a distinct possiblity.

On the previous page, I posted links to both Johan Bernt Andreason's baptism with the birthdate of 14 Nov 1881 and Bernt Rostad's WWI draft registration with the same birthdate.

The obituary had a Winnett byline said Bernt was of Winnett, byline was Roundup.

The wife Anna Nelson / Neilson who was born about 1883 I haven't been able to generate much on her. She did not have a full obit but just a listing of services. The various censuses say she came to US in 1902, the same year as Bernt, which could be true or might be some lazy census taker's ditto. Bernt's obit gave their marriage as occurring in Minneapolis, Minnesota but so far I've not been able to find in the online databases I've access to. In 1905 census there are about a half-dozen Ann/ Anna/ Annie Nelson living in Minneapolis but don't know if any are her.

The funeral home who managed Anna's service was Roberts and perhaps they or a survivor organization have additional records, or at least that's a possibility.

Yes, the birth date matches, Leksvik is a match, residence of Røstadsand is a match. Father's name "Andrian" seems like a misprint of Andreas.

There is no doubt the forum found the Norwegian roots of your Bernt Rostad.

At Minnesota Official Marriage System website (MOMS), marriage 06 Oct. 1906, Hennepin county, Minnesota. Names are transcribed as Rustad, Ben and Nilsen, Anna. Certificate can be ordered and may include name of Anna's father.

Thanks to Jane for persevering on the marriage search. Here is a link to their marriage record, they were married by a Lutheran pastor, LJ Jerdee and the ceremony was witnessed by Bernt Rønning and Olaug Rønning.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939K-RG3X-PR?mode=g&i=518&wc=MRJZ-L2S%3A1060518501%3Fcc%3D1803974&cc=1803974

Bernt Ronning died in 1938 and the transcribed record identifies his father as Ole Ronning:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FD7H-RMG

Olaug Ronning and her sons travelled to Norway and back to US about 1911:
http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/gen/vis/8/pe00000000198421

At the time of the wedding, Lars J Jerdee was the pastor of Immanuel Lutheran and 7 other churches "en kordere tid" in Minneapolis.

Here is a census listing from 1905 for a Bernt Runnning listed next to Bernhardt Rustad, no Olaug listed but interesting if the fellows were neighbors:

A candidate for Andreas Johansen and family in the 1865 Census. Birth date is listed as Sept 25, 1851 in the 1910 Norwegian Census.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01038336002211

I would think that number 57 is his baptism record, however the date is 24 Sept not 25 Sept and the father seems to be Johan Pedersen?.

I know that around the time my grandfather came to America they changed the way they did names in Norway. Is that why my cousins father doesn't use the son daughter form. Just trying to understand how the Rustad figures into their naming process. Just curious.

I am trying to find the ship Johannes came over on as well as the one his family came over on. Any ideas?

My understanding is that Kristiania is Oslo and the only ships I can find are that were traveling from Kristiania to New York were the

Hellig Olav

.

Oscar II

.

United States

A family member says they came over on the star. I can not find a ship by that name. I thought perhaps he meant it was part of the white star line. I have had no luck there. I can't find any ships that went from Kristiania to New York. Hope someone with more knowledge of norwegian emmigration might know other ships or how to look up passengers. TIA.
