I still find it interesting that the year was handwritten on the certificate when the month and day is typed, as is the age. |

I have written to the creator of the tree. I also have a list of Lutheran churches that were in Boone before 1870 and will contact them. I may have done that years ago, but I don't remember for sure what I was pursuing at that time, so I will try again. |

These Johnsons were all stateside before 1868-1870.
I've got to say, the biography for Martin Johnson got my attention. First thing that jumped out at me when I glanced at the biography was the name Anna Matilda Anderson. Then I realized that's Betsy's daughter's name. For a brief moment I thought I'd made a great discovery! |

| The Betsy Johnson we are seeking was married in Iowa in 1874, so the Betzy with father Johannes Lockwood is ruled out (she's in the 1875)...and as you say the other Betzy is also ruled out. Let's hope more info is listed on Betsy Johnson's marriage certificate. |

I'm curious whether this candidate will look more likely when Nancy returns with the marriage certificate. Love that birth date. And so often an immigrant is thought to be "from Oslo" or "from Bergen" etc. when in fact the birth record is elsewhere, in a smaller parish.
The work done to rule out candidates is very helpful. Disappointing not to find the right Betsy, but it's progress nonetheless. |

Sometimes civil marriage records contain extra information, sometimes not. Hopefully in this case there will be other information to help.
Here are the counts of Betsy like (selected from names that start with "Bet") names b 1850 +/- 5 years in each fylke in the 1865 census.

If one was only going to play the numbers, Bergen would not be the first region to be looking, Oslo & eastward would the area.
The big cities in Norway--Oslo, Bergen, Trondheim--can be associated by regions. Oslo says south or east Norway, Bergen says west Norway and Trondheim says north Norway
Emotional descriptions of one's birthplace as in naming the biggest, nearest city as your home place aren't always logical. However Nord-rana is closer to Trondheim by half than to Bergen, so why not say Trondheim rather than Bergen?
As I said before, the search is open to any person, so you or anyone might research the Nord-Rana gal to find out her "fit." |

| Quick update. I have been checking with churches in both Iowa, mentioned in her obituary and where Betsy's children were born, and and in Great Falls, Montana, where she was living in 1912 and 1920 (and probably all the years in between). So far nothing has been found. One church responded that they won't be able to research until next summer! Shouldn't be much longer, though, for information from the marriage certificate. |

Nancy, one thing you can research to help pinpoint the move from Iowa would be to see if Alexander and Betsy owned property in Boone county. Provided they did, it might be valuable to know the details of the sale. Sometimes land records in the case of a sale mention the updated location for the seller if they have moved on...
Since no one has found Betsy in the 1900 US census (with its valuable data cargo...) I wonder if she had moved to Canada with son John and then back to US before 1901 presumably when the next Canadian census was taken-thus missing both.
Perhaps the local paper in Great Falls published an obituary on her owing to her years there? Obituaries published by diverse papers may or may not have the same details, editors pick and choose details or formats and occasionally you find helpful differences.
Was there an estate settlement on her husband?
Perhaps you've posted this already and I'm not remembering it, but when did daughter Anna Mathilda die? If she died before 1963 in Missouri the actual death certificates from that state are published online for free and the modern format asks questions about the parents' names and birthplaces.
Did the son living in North Dakota in 1934 also eventually die there? The modern d.c. in North Dakota also ask for parents' names and birthplaces. They are cheap too ($5/each) and there is an online searchable index. |
