Hello everyone

I am trying to verify some information from a Nz death certificate for an Olden OLSEN. who died in NZ in 1936 aged 75 years.

His fathers name is given as Ola OLSEN . His mother Fredraka OLSEN( maiden name LARSEN). Place of birth Ork (?) Nedalen (kedalen?) Norway. His date of birth could be 1861 if the death information is correst or 1870 according to the details given on his Nz Naturalisation records. I have tried the Norwegian Digital Archives without success as I didn't know the correct County to search !

I would appreciate any help on locating this person. Is it possible that his name is an anglicised version of a Norwegian name eg Auden ?

Thanks Padow

The free databases at FamilySearch.org indicate an 'Ole Olsen' born in 1861 in Orkdal, Sør-Trøndelag, Norway who might be of interest.
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N4RG-3BC

If you can find out WHEN he arrived in New Zealand then perhaps searching the Norwegian emigration databases might be able to prove the possibility of that individual either yea or nea.

There is something called Nedalen in Sør-Trøndelag but I am personally unfamiliar with that area of study.

Thanks everyone for the help. You are all amazing.

Thanks Hopkins I think I have found the person I was looking for. Calculating from the information on his death print out he probably arrived in NZ in 1888. Is there an emigration data base we could check?

Thanks Eibache and jk Marler for the very valuable information.

JK Marler---the 1865 census seems to show a father mother and a sister Oline. Are there any later censuses where we can trace the family further. ?

Regards Padow

1875 census mother has died between 1865 and 1875, and very likely also the paternal grandparents who were living with them in 1865 as well, they're still on the same farm as in 1865:

http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=13&filnamn=f71638&gardpostnr=1034&personpostnr=6580&merk=6580#ovre

Most likely departure port for Ørkedal is Trondhjem, but if he left employed as a sailor he may or may not be included in the Emigrants through Trondhjem database.

Here is the search engine for the Trondhjem departures. Unfortunately you have an unenviable name Ole Olsen to be looking for, the most common name in Norway:

Thanks again. JK Marler Would it be possible to trace the marriage of the father and mother? Ole OLSEN and Fredrikke Larsdatter. They probably married around 1860 although I realise Ole junior may not have been their first child. I'll try the emigrant database you suggested.

Once again thanks to you all. You are all so helpful. So much excellent information in such a short time is amazing !
JK Marler thanks for searching the marriage records for Ole and Frederika. Unfortunately they were too difficult for me to read and there was no English translations of the headings to help me make sense of what I could see. Would you be kind enough to translate the names of the couple the date and the place so that I can add them to my records.

Regards Padow

Hello eibache. I am a little puzzled about the details of the marriage of Ole Larsen (Snossen ? place of birth?) and Karen Christensdatter (Oren? ) married on July 8 1824. Could you please explain Snossen and Oren for someone who is a novice at reading Norwegian records.?

Thanks for all your research on my behalf.
