Looking for information on Olav Hansen Båsnes born in Midstokke,Norway around 1898-99,he was married in Norway to Tora Mathilde Bratthammar,he went to America to work to make money for his family, but they never heard back from him again, they think he was lost at sea,he is said to have lived in Brooklyn over there, would be fantastic to find where he was buried over there very grateful for any help,to solve this case,

Family tree online here.

A second family tree online here.

Is this the correct person? The birth date is off, and this family seems to have stayed in Norway?

Below, notes from the first tree:

Olaf Johan Båsnes
Far: Hans Andreas Hansen Båsnes (1874 - 1952)
Mor: Inger Lovise Johansdatter (1872 - 1958)
Född: 1901-02-10 Kopervik, Midtstokke
Döpt: 1901-03-03 Kopervik

The birth for this Olaf is found here.
See #5 at Rogaland fylke, Bysoknet i Kopervik, Klokkerbok nr. B 3 (1891-1909), Fødte og døpte 1901, side 59.

His family stayed behind in Norway,he wanted to take them with him to America but his mother in law were not allowing that,so he went over alone, and thats where the trail goes cold.

A Family tree tells he died on Midstokke 1927 age 26, but the church record for that period seems to be not online.
He had descendants, so maybe it will be their secret.

Thanks. So two lines of inquiry occur.

1. Determine why does the family tree say he died 1927 in Norway? For that you could contact the tree creator or descebdants or find q way to access records not online.

Sometimes a "death date" only means the person died after that date.

2. Investigate his alleged immigration. For that, we would like to know when did he immigrate? It would at least be after his youngest child was conceived.

Jensen90 can you shed light on a possible time frame for his immigration?
Can you share more possible clues, such as did he have relatives in the USA? Do you know which name was his calling name - Olaf or Johan? Probably 1910 census may provide q clue about that, and/or his confirmation record, or family story. Can you explain why you think he settled in Brooklyn? Is he known to be there at a certain point? One month after leaving Norway? Ten years after? Do you know what was his occupation?

Before we look in the USA for a person who might be called John Hansen there, would be good to know all we can about him.

Thank you,yes I know for a fact he did not die in Norway from the descendants here in Norway, there are no tombstone on him in here and the family was told that he might have died on a shipwreck in America possibly after 1927? and they believe he lived in Brooklyn, they think he went over in 1923 maybee he went before that too? it was told that he went over one time on his own, then he came back, before he emigrated for good,i dont know of any relatives he might have had in the US.

He was a fisherman sailor, and Brooklyn was where Karmøy people settled then, and i would think he had many connections down there,he probably went down there fresh of the boat from Norway in 1923-24. I dont know what he called himself down there, were Ellis island in operation the1920s? thanks again

An Olaf Baasnas is listed in 1925 census Brooklyn, Kings, New York

I didn't find his death registered at Italian Genealogical Group
here

Here is a family tree for Olaf Johan on Family Search, with quite a few errors. I don't know how to get in touch with the person who created it - if that interests you maybe someone can help. link

I wonder if this man, Johannes Knutsen Baasnes born about 1908 in Norway and lived in Brooklyn, might have known Olaf. Johannes married a woman named Karina and had a daughter Janet ca 1935 who is likely living and maybe might know? In 1940 census Karina is in Atlantic City listed as a widow.
In 1928 Johannes gives Midstokke as his last residence. link

Thank you guys, this is amazing finds,i would love to know more about his sister Olga and where she ended up in America? And if the record of him married over in America is actually the same Olav,it would be very interesting, all the facts match in emigrationyear and birthyear.

Here's a link to marriage of Lars Thompson 25 April 1926 in Brooklyn. This record calls the bride Martha Johnsen. (Tree gives her father as Ole Mikal Johansen Midtstokke).
Link

From the tree Kåre posted, Olga Båsnes died 21 feb 1923.
Her husband was Lars, born in 1893, son of Torgils.
Father listed as Torgils Govertsen Grindhaug.

In the April 1923 emigration of Olaf Båsnes (posted earlier), he is listed next to
Lars Torgersen, Fiskeskipper, b 1893 Skutenes, going to New York
link

In the passenger manifest (link posted above) showing Olaf Båsnes arriving at Ellis Island, Lars Torgilsen age 29, fisker, is listed next to him. Just like Olaf, Lars says he has no relative to list in back in Norway. Lars has been in USA before, 1911-1915, in Brooklyn. He lists NONE when asked if he is traveling to a relative or friend. Length of stay uncertain.

And a correction to Olaf on the list at Ellis Island: He is #5 on the passenger manifest (Lars is #6). On page 2 of the information for passenger #5, says he is traveling to Uncle Tom Johnson, 570 45th Street, in Brooklyn.

A new finding - below - shows that the Lars who seemed to be traveling with Olaf was indeed his brother-in-law (Olga's husband).
