I've been searching ancestory and family search for my great grandfather Olaf Christian Olsen but haven't had any luck finding his baptism, birth record, or parents in Norway. He was born on 16 Sep 1879 in Norway, i have the following info from family but not sure if it's accurate. I have a picture of his mother whose last name was krog or krogg and told when he came to america he changed his name to Olsen which was her maiden name. I have a record that he worked on the ship named imberhorne out of New Castle Australia and then came to the port of San Francisco on it in December 1901. This is how he immigrated to the U.S. I'm told he left Norway when he was 13, the Imberhorne was built in London so guessing he went to London on a different ship from Norway but don't know from where or how. He wrote on his U.S. naturalization paperwork he was born in Vigoe, Norway but i can't find a Vigoe, i did find Vega Norway and according to Wikipedia it was called Vego prior to 1891 so if anyone can confirm if i'm correct or maybe have another idea that would be great. Also any help or ideas on finding him in Norway, i have pretty good census and other info on him once he got to the U.S. just no luck once i get to Norway. Thanks Dave

A candidate could be Olaf Kristian, see #32 although his birth date is Sept 17, not the 16.
His father was Ole Olsen and the mother Oline Kristiansdatter.

I am going to post some of the US records. Even tho you know all of the information in them the other posters on this site do not and it could help us determine if the data we find in Norway is a good fit for your Olaf. This record gives his birth date as Sep 16, 1879 and the place as Vigoe or Vigos Norway

A different birth date is provided in his WWII Draft Card but the birth location does fit the Nordland County that Einar has posted above.

The original document states his age as 62, his birth date as Sept. 10, 1879 and his place of birth as Helgeland, Norway.

From Wikipedia

"Vega is a municipality in Nordland county, Norway. It is part of the Helgeland traditional region"

And Helgeland could be a farm as in the birth data given by Kċre just above.

Name: Olaf Christie Olsen
Age: 63
Birth Date: 10 Sep 1879

Another bit of data which matches that from WWII Card.

Olaf Christian Olsen

wow thanks for the quick reply everyone, you are correct lyndal that i had that info already but good idea to post the info, i had the different 10 Sep date too but figured that was probably an error, most of the U.S. documents i have say 16 Sep 1879. So the Vega is Vigoe theory works with him being born in Helgeland correct? It seems like the baptism record Kare sent might be it, at least checking out, has the right birthday, but have a few questions, where does it say 2 Nov baptism? Also i noticed under the parents it has 1874, is that when they were married? Are the names on the right relatives or probably just witnesses and members of the congregation? Ole Olsen apparently is like John Smith here, popular name. BTW Einar is my middle name, was grandfather's name. Thanks again, Dave

Right now it is a little too early to know if the child found by Einar is the correct child or that the child found by Kċre is the correct one. More needs to be found out about these two and any others that might yet surface before you can definitely decide who is the correct child. Note the two areas of Vega the municipality in Nordland county in the region of Helgeland is quite different than the farm Helgeland in the Parish of Lardal in the county of Vestfold.

The baptism date is Do i.e. same as above, so look up to the top of the page where you will find the date.

The names on the far right are the witnesses or in norwegian

faddere = sponsor, christening, parents, godparents

And yes the date of 1874 most likely refers to the marriage. Here is the record from Ancestry.co

Ole Olsen
in the Norway, Select Marriages, 1660-192
Name: Ole Olsen
Gender: Male
Marriage Date: 19 jun 1874
Marriage Place: Lardal,Vestfold,Norway
Spouse: Karen Hansdr
FHL Film Number: 1282548

Link to the original record, shows the names of the fathers of the couple See number 7

Here is some information on the chid found by Einar in Nordalnd. This is likely the marriage of the parents Ole Olsen and Oline Christiansdatter in Vega on June 24, 1879. See number 5

Likely Ole Olsen and family in the 1875 Census for Vega

It looks to me as if Olaf Kristian Olsen born in 1879 left Vega for America in 1899. See number 6 left page

He is listed as bachelor fisherman Olaf Kristian Olsen 1879.

I looked into the wedding record for the parents from June 19.1874, see #7.
No Krog name there, nor when she died in Siljan parish July 25.1896 (Karen Kristine born Hansen)

The family name Krog goes fare back.
Some sources, not proven to my knowledge, say back to 1067, to Ketil Krog (a real person in the Saga). Ketil was son of an English Nobleman and came to Norway 1067 ca 10-15 years old with a brother Skule b. 1052.

Was your grandfather/ granduncle either Harold or Einar? Here is the father of those two in 1910 census. Transcription says he migrated in 1895:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MV2K-FT1

There are several Olaf Olson dying in California with approximate birthdates near your stated. For instance here is one whose mother's maiden name is something other than Krog:

Vigoe cold be Vigĝ;
Bjĝrndalen link is spelled Bjoerndalen in English

There are farms named or starts with Vigĝ in Vik and Horningdal parish's in Sogn and Fjordane County.

The letter G in Vig is perhaps changed to K in modern Norwegian.
Vikĝ, Vikĝren.
