Most of the connections are probably through the wife Sarah Boyd. the 1920 Census shows tow of her nephews Henry and Allie? Thorsen living with her. Could be sons of Thor Olsen her brother who was part of the group to come from Norway in 1848 or based on the 1910 Census the sons of a brother born in America a Albert Thorsen.

so the great Joe A Boyd mystery is solved! Still seems to be some confusion regarding their daughter Tena (Thine?) Boyd. Her death notice in the Herscher paper said she was born in Etna, Norway on Oct 10, 1868 and came to Illinois at age 1yr with her parents Joe and Sarah(Thorson) Boyd. She had 7 children: Louise, Mabel, Iborra, Myrtle, Thorval, Joe, and my grandmother Anna. Could the Etna reference actually be referring to Etne which would fit with the Baúge Skånevik? Does Yttre translate to "outer"? Are Sarah and Siri interchangeable names? Why did Ole Thorsen Flatland have "vagrant" after his name? Thanks again for all your wonderful help. Robert

The search for Tena (Thine?) Boyd is still ongoing. Etna could very well be Etne, next to Skånevik, but no good candidate have been found yet.
Yttre translate to "outer". It is used to separate the two Bauge farms. The other is named Indre Bauge, "inner". Outer, as in nearest to the sea.
Sarah would be the americanized/anglified version of Siri.
The priest added the word "løsgjenger" (vagrant in english)to Ole Thorsen Flatland's name in the marriage record.
It probably means he was a vagabond without a permanent residence, travelling around in the districts, looking for work. Often to the hassle of the locals.

Anton, I'm struggeling to see the connection you've found between these people and the Boyd's. Could you elaborate?
Niels Mikkelsen Fjelberg and Agathe Abelsdatter is interesting. They have a daughter Guro Nilsdatter, born 09 Oct 1870, christened at home 10 Oct 1870.

Could she be Thine (Tena) Boyd, born 10 Oct 10 1868, and the same as Dina or Trina Nelson b 1870?

I'm starting to believe Thine Boyd could be adopted. She seems to be born in Norway, with a father named Nils (Ref "Dina Nilson"). Both John A Boyd and Sarah Boyd were in America in the 1860''s, and it's unlikely the travelled to Norway in that period.

Just a bit more info: Joe was in the army from Sept 1862 till July, 1865. Joe owned 157 acres of prime land. Abutting his land were 4 Thorson plots totaling 315 acres and also a NELSON property. A J. Clinton tree(don't know where i got it) shows a Dina Nelson as a daughter of Joe A Boyd and Sarah Thorson. Hope this doesn't clutter your efforts.

A summary of the various US Census records might help at this time.

In 1870 Joseph Boyd was living with or next to Thor Thorson and his wife Caroline Thorson. Sarah (Siri) age 4 and her parents and siblings left Norway in 1848 so it is difficult to believe that Trine? is their child if she was born in Norway.

1870

In the 1880 census Joseph Boyd and Sarah are married. Living with them are a whole host of characters.
Sivert O Boyd
Lars J Boyd
Hocke Nelson
Dina Nelson

1880

In the 1900 Census Joseph A Boyd and Sarah have living with them
Ole Thorsen, probably the father of Sarah
Haskey Boyd probably Hoske Nelson fro 1880
Ida Nelson maybe the sister of Dina and Hoske
Thor Fritz probably the son of Lars J Fritz (Boyd) in 1880

1900

By the 1910 Census Joseph A Boyd is deceased and Sarah is living with her American born brother Albert and his large family. At the bottom of the list is Mikel Nelson
Miklel Nelson is one of the twins. Mikael and Elias Nielsen born in 1868 to Niels Mikkelsen and Agathe Abelsdatter

1910

In 1920 Sarah has her two nephews (one the son of brother Albert) named Henry and the other Allie unknown living with her

1920

Interesting observation:
Sarah (Siri) Thorson and her future brother-in-law Abraham Askautson Boyd was christened in the same church, only two weeks between:

(Also shown on first page:) Ola Torsson Fatland Hillesdal (1812-) and Kari Johannesdatter Djuvik (1815-) emigrated to America in april 1847 with their 4 children:
Brita 1836
Johannes 1839
Siri 1842 Sarah Boyd
Tor 1844

Now not everyone on the list of characters needs to be related to either Joseph or Sarah, they could be children of friends. I can se no easy connection to Syvert O Boyd from 1880. He is likely

Syvert Johan Olsen
in the Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927
Name: Syvert Johan Olsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 19 feb 1859
Baptism Date: 27 feb 1859
Baptism Place: Skaanevik, Hordaland, Norway
Father: Ole Larssen
Mother: Gunnele Abrahamsdr

#20

The same holds for the twins. Mikael Elias Nelson b 1868 Fjelberg, Hordaland and twin
Abel Mikael Nelson b 1868 Fjelbeg, Hordaland, found in Illinois and found in Minnesota. Parents for both are Niels Mikklesen Fjelberg and Agathe Abelsdatter

Numbers 77 and 78 are the twins. Abel Mikael and Mikael Elias Nielsen.

#77 &78

However I think that there is a stronger connection for Hokse Nelson, Dina Nelson and Ida Nelson.

Dina Nelson could very well be the same as the daughter Tena (Thine?) Boyd.

In the 1880 Census both Hokse Nelson and Dina Nelson are listed as boarders. Dina as born in Norway and Hokse born in Illinois.

In the 1900 Census Dina is gone and Hokse is listed as adopted and Ida is listed as Servant. Both are born in Illinois

Thine (Tina or Dina or whatever} was married in 1887.

Thine Boyd
in the Illinois, County Marriage Records, 1800-1940
Name: Thine Boyd
Gender: Female
Age: 17
Birth Date: abt 1870
Marriage Date: 1887
Marriage Place: Kankakee, Illinois, USA
Father: Joseph Boyd
Mother: Siri Thorsen
Spouse: Heldor Thorbjomsen Tofte
Film Number: 001839993

Heldor's parents are listed as from Tøfte Ovre, Fjelberg, Hordaland
This family in 1865

1865

Name: Heldor Thorbjomsen Tofte
Gender: Male
Age: 23
Birth Date: abt 1864
Marriage Date: 1887
Marriage Place: Kankakee, Illinois, USA
Father: Thorbjorn T Tofte
Mother: Anna T Vik
Spouse: Thine Boyd
Film Number: 001839993

All three children are referred to as Nelson Boyd in various trees and are all listed as children of Joseph and Sarah Boyd.

Dina or Trina is listed as being born in Norway in 1880 and 1900 Census (Oct 1869 in 1900 Census). In the 1910 birth place is listed as Illinois, 1920 back to Norway, and back to Illinois in 1930.

Hocke Nelson Boyd is listed in a tree as born July 15, 1871 Newark, Kendall, Illinois.

Ida Nelson Boyd is listed in a tree as born March 15, 1874 in Herscher, Illinois. Herscher is a village in Kankakee County.

I have refered to Syvert O. Boyd previously. He is the half-brother of Joseph and Abraham A. Boyd. They share the same mother; Gunli Abrahamsdatter.
