Hello All!
I'm looking at this marriage register for Magnus Pettersen and Wilhelmine Sorensdatter in Grimstad Parish (#33). I have no info on Magnus other than his birthday, his father's name and the fact that he was born in Sweeden.
There are two names in front of the name Magnus. At first I thought these were two additional names for him...but I am wondering if the first name/word is actually a prefix, because I see it before other names in the register as well. So, if anyone is able to offer some assistance to deciphering the Groom's full name or the two name/words before "Magnus", I would greatly appreciate it!

The first is an abbreviation of ungkarl means bachelor. The second I guess as steward. prob stenarb. abbreviation of stone worker.

The first is as jkmarler says "Ungk", which is short for ungkarl, meaning bachelor. The second could be Stuert, which is the norwegian word for steward. A stuert is in charge of the crew's food and accommodation on board a merchant ship.

Was he a sailor? Other possibility (less likely) is Husmand (farmer).

I see you have a Family Tree on Ancestry.com with the family of Wilhelmina well in hand. So it is the ancestry of Magnus born in Sweden that is at question.

A tougr search, to find Magnus This is likely Wilhemmina in the 1875 Norwegian Census, living on Gimle but no sign of future husband.

1875

I do see that the 1910 Norwegian Census does give an exact birth date for Magnus of Nov 14 1848. That seems to differ from the year of 1849 you have in your Tree.

1910

It is a tough hunt for Magnus as I am sure you already know. So we turn over any stone we can find. I notice in the baptism record for Jørgen born in 1896 that one of the witnesses is named Else Rebecca Andersen

Here is the original record.

#16

This is likely the same lady on Berge in 1875. She is not from Sweden but her husband Otto Andersen is listed as from Wermland Sverige. Probably Värmland, Sweden which borders Norway on the east.

1875

Magnus arrived in Grimstad in 1880? and is listed in the parish innflyttede records of 1880. More "challenging" handwriting - but another chance.

(Christine Walsh has also posted her query to Ancestry message boards (Norway>General) and no acknowledgement of response there either.)

The fifth column head asks the reason for relocating so it's probably not a town it's some sort of work. The same purpose as #29 just below Magnus' entry. The word doesnot start with an H. On this page in column 6 where they are asked to tell the place they are leaving and where they were born, these #s in col 5 have Hs for comparison: 26, 27, 29, 32.

Magnus' attest (the far right column) looks something like ___ Ekeberg and is dated 8 Nov 1875

Mr. Handwriting wrote this one, too. Looks like stone worker stenarb is Magnus' occupation and he hasn't aged a day since 1877 still age 31, Sweden alone is where he was born.

Stoneworker is interesting. Google told me that there is (or was) a marble quarry in Ekeberg.
