A group from Ringsaker counting 17 named adults plus twenty-some unnamed children were entered as emigrants headed for Wisconsin in the Hedmark passport protocol on May 5, 1858.
I have found no trace of the group between these protocol entries and the US census of 1870, where eight members of the group appear to be living in the town of Neshonoe (pop. 869) in Lacrosse county, Wisconsin.
This table contains a list of the 17 emigrants with the eight census matches.
The last couple in the list were my ancestors Jens Hansen (b. Jan. 13, 1813) and wife Marie Larsdatter (bapt. May 14, 1816), who were travelling with children Mathias (b. June 7, 1844), Christian (b. Feb 3, 1848) and Kirstine/Kjerstine (b. Feb. 4, 1856), while their eldest son Johannes, my ancestor, born in 1842, before the couple was married, stayed behind in Norway.
I have found no trace of this family in America, and would appreciate any help in tracing them. I have had no luck searching in the 1860 census. The town of Neshonoe does, as far as I can determine, not appear in the 1860 census.

This looks like at least one of the families, Engebret Olsen and wife Kari in the 1860 Census living in Neshonoc, La Crosse, Wisconsin, right where you found them in 1870 Census.

Thank you!!!! It appears that Neshonoc is a real place while Neshonoe only exists in the (transcription of) the 1870 Census.

Thank you for the link to Digitalarkivet; that looks like a convenient way to search in the 1860 census. It also seems to give the same results that lyndal40 obatined. Familysearch, which I have been using, seems to use a different transcription, rendering the wife's name as "Cathan" rather than "Catherine".
Regarding Neshonoc in the 1860 census: I have found no other candidates for matches than "Embrand Oleson" w/wife, and in fact I doubt that this is a true match. The ministerial book also kept a
list of emigrants, including children, and here (right, bottom) the family is listed as

which matches rather poorly with the family in the Neshonoc 1860 list. These children would of course be grown up and possibly living by themselves by the time of the 1870 census, but their daughter Marthe could very well be 28 year old wife in the couple appearing just below Engebret and Carrie in 1870.

I have seen somewhere that the towns of Barre and Neshonoc were merged to a new town called Hamilton, and that possibly at some point they were also split up again. I have tried to find these towns in the 1860 census, but with no luck.

Is this the John Simonson and family you are referring to in your linked document that refers to the people you have found in the 1870 Census.

Back to the 1860 Census I posted on Embrand Oleson. The names do not match well that is true but I would not totally dismiss him. I notice when looking at the original record that on that same page and two families above him is the family of Even E. Christianson wife Catherine age 35 daughter Mary age 13 all born in Norway, and daughter Isabella born in Wisconsin. Names are a little hared to read but this could be Even Christoffersen Enger Eie and family.
Here is the transcribed record. One of the problems you are going to encounter is that the names, ages etc. are not going to be very accurate making the search very difficult.

A good source can be the ELCA records. Perhaps Jens and Mari had children in Wisconsin. Here is a possibility in La Crosse County

I've mentioned this before but there is a "dirty, little secret" about the 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses. The original schedules were hand written by the census taker. The census taker then turned that copy into the appropriate county courthouse. While there another handwritten copy was made of the schedules and this copy was sent to the State capitol and while there another copy was made of that copy and this last copy was the one sent to Washington. This copy (the one at the National Archives) of a copy of copy was the actual copy which was microfilmed and upon which all indexing has been made. Unfortunately, most counties did not retain the "original" copy, either by utilizing the raw paper for other purposes kindling, wrapping or as garbage, the original copy which by evidentiary standards would be the best copy is mostly gone.
Still the copy that remains, is what it is, not replaceable but prone to errors. |

Many men in Company E came from southwestern Wisconsin:

The Jens Hansen in the same company is said to have a son Knudt born 1856 (in Wisconsin, per 1900 census with his mother Mary in LaCrosse). If accurate, and if the list of children born in Norway is complete, he would be a different Jens.

Thank you for all the input, it will take me some time to sort it all out. One thing I can confirm now: John Simonsen and Wife Agnete in Ringsaker did have a daughter Pernille; the whole family is listed in the ministerial book on the same page as "my" family:

Might be worth following up a little on the Jens Hansen found by JaneC. I am not sure the the Knut found in 1900 is really related to the Jens Hansen from the Civil War. Her is a little info on Jens Hansen.

| There was no Knut in «my» family, but if the US records don’t imply he was related to Jens and Marie, then these last findings are very interesting. How/where do you search in the censuses and in the church records? |

There were several Jens Hansen participating in the Civil War.
1) Jens Hansen, born about 1826 in Nannestad, Norway.
Married and resided in Calumet County, Wisconsin. He died in the infamous Andersonville Prison Camp in GA 23 Jun 1864.
Private Jens Hanson from Nannestad saving the 15th's flag at Chickamauga, Georgia on September 19th 1863. He was taken prisoner the next day.
2) Jens Hansen, born about 1826 in Norway.
Single, resided in Fillmore County, Minnesota.
Died in a rebel prison in Salisbury, North Carolina.
3) Jens Hanson, born about 1816 in Norway.
Married and resided in Onalaska, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin.
Discharged from the service at Jacinto, Mississippi, on account of disability, 6 Aug 1862.
After the war, he moved back to La Crosse County. He and his wife, Mary, had 4 children.
By 1900, only 2 were still living, including Knute (1856). Mary was living with Knute at the time of the 1900 Census, as Jens died before 1890. |
