Hello, I have been led to a ships log that indicates a person I am looking for has boarded the ship at a place that looks like GIFLE. Any ideas what this may mean? The ship also had other passengers that is had collected from Antwerp, Copenhagen and Bremen so I thought Gifle may be a port somewhere along there that I just don't know about or it is part of the word for a full name? I don't know how to down load the jpeg for you to see....sorry

My best guess would be
Norrsundet is a locality situated in Gävle Municipality, Gävleborg County, Sweden with 968 inhabitants in 2010.[1]
Ancestry.com has a number of immigration records for passengers on ships that have as their original Sweden and list the point of departure as Gifle or Gifle and Narroundet
Here is a short example of one of the records.
Name: Dan Annersleett
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Age: 28
Port of Departure: Gifle
Port of Arrival: Sydney, New South Wales
Voyage Arrival Date: 23 May 1867
Vessel Name: Hebe
Origin Location: Sweden |

| The ship's name was The Hern and I gather he was a member of the crew as a carpenter. He boarded November 1911. |

Oh thank you. He was Norweigan so being in Sweden is not improbable. Maybe it was the closest and easiest port for him to get to or he was working near there. He came from Fjaere,Aust-Agder,Norway. I thought I was reading it wrong as Gifle! Appreciate your help  |

Here is another example of the use of the town of Gifle, Sweden. A person filling out a naturalization form gives as his birth place Gifle Sweden. He was also a working sailor.
