Good Day,
I'm new to this site and not adept with it. Also I do not understand Norwegian, and I have difficulty reading script, even in English.
I am the great grandson of Ole Ivarson, the son of Ivar Olsen Offerdal and Berthe Kerstine Anfindsdatter, born 11 Feb 1841, in Laerdal. He was the oldest of a large number of children, and I believe the first to leave for the United States. When, from where, how and to where I would like to find out.
Ole's first appearance in the US is in the 1870 federal census listed as Ole Everson. He is living in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, which is a port town, not far from New York. He worked in a Fire Brick Yard. He has a wife named Catherine who was born in New York, about 1838, and whose parents came from Newfoundland, Canada. We think they were english.
In subsequent state and federal census he is listed Ole I Offerdahn,
Ole E Offerdahl, etc. His wife Catherine is listed as Kate or Cath. In all these documents he is employed as a Dock Laborer. He never seems to have left Perth Amboy.
He died 4 Jun 1894. The family legend is that it was from a fall at the docks. His widow was listed in the 1900 census as Catherine Everson. Their three children used the surname Everson.
He apparently kept in touch with his family, since his descendants
stayed in touch with his brother Ivar Olsen Offerdal. Ivar settled in Norman county, Minnesota, USA. He became Edward Ivar Offerdahl
and raised a family of 7 girls and two boys.
Some inquiries about Ole have already been made, through a cousin of a cousin, with no results. He apparently does not appear in the 1865 Norwegian census, & no records go his emigration have been found. I have not found anything here in the immigration records.
I would appreciate any help. |

Well he was still in Norway in 1855 when he was confirmed.

Looks like he left for America March 28,1865

Here is his family in the 1865 Census. Ole is not listed so he likely left before the 1865 Census was taken.

| Thank you lyndal40, you seem to have found him. I hope someone can translate the documents for me, I have been reading up on what they mean, but I really can't decipher much. Does one of the columns indicate what ship he left on? |

The record I have posted is a parish record. It is a record of a person leaving a parish. It shows that on March 28 in the year 1865 a bachelor (ungkarl) named Ole Iversen Offerdal age 22 left the parish with the intent to travel to America.
Ole would then have gone to a nearby port most likely Bergen where he would have bought a ticket and boarded a ship. He left before the Norwegian ports started keeping records of emigrants.
He would have most likely travelled to New York or Quebec.

You might want to read the various articles from Norway Heritage on emigration. Here is a link to Canadian Records that discusses the difficulty in finding immigrant records from 1850 to 1865.

The parents of Ole Ivarson, Ivar Olsen and Kirstine Anfindsdatter, were married May 23 1841, see #14 https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/11600/48044/18.
Ivar Olsen was 29 years old, came from the farm Natvig, and his father was Ole Andreasen.
Kirstine Anfindsdatter was 22 years old and came from the farm Offerdal, and her father was Anfind Pedersen. |

| Ivar (Iver) Olsen was born Nov 11 1812. His parents was not married. The mother was Mari Rasmusdatter from Natvig and she said the father was Ole Andreasen. See https://media.digitalarkivet.no/view/11596/48022/29 Iver on left page. |

| Thank you all for your efforts, I really appreciate it. I am trying to better understand the record keeping. Apparently my ancestor chose the wrong time to immigrate, the information I am looking for may not exist. However, with the information you have found I can put another generation on my tree. |

| I have been studying the shipping records and have learned enough to be dangerous. I found only one Ole from Offerdal traveling in the 1865 time frame, and that is Ole Hansen Offerdal. He was on the bark Sleipner, left Bergen 29 Apr and arrived Quebec 25 Jun 1865. Is this person found in the church records? His age was given as 22, the same as Ole Iversen Offerdal, and I have to wonder if the passenger list was in error. If Ole Hansen did not live at Offerdal, then maybe this is my Ole. What say the experts? |

Well we have all seen bigger errors than a man named Ole Iversen Offerdal being given the name Ole Hansen Offerdal on a ships manifest.
