I am about to give up searching for the emigration record of g. grandfather, Elling Petersen Enger, born 1836 in Eggedal, Sigdal, Buskerud, Norway. I have his Bible which, in his own handwriting, clearly states that he left Eggedal in April of 1854 and arrived in America on the 20th of June, same year. He wrote this on 22 January 1866. He just failed to give the name of the ship and the port of arrival, His parents came in 1861 and they landed first in Quebec so I assume it would be the same for 1854. None of the 1854 ships on this site list him, and there are very few passenger lists for that year. Any suggestions for additional resources? In America he settled in Spring Grove, MN and in late 1880's moved to Yellow Medicine County, MN where he died in 1900.

Enger or Engar, same farm. His father Peder Ellingsen was born on "Elling-Engar"

No passenger-list to my knowledge from Christiania (Oslo) or Drammen exist from 1854.

His parents em from Drammen on bark Askur, see #6

Thank you. I was hoping that some updated records may have been found since my last inquiry. I have him on an "Utvanderer List Til Amerika" leaving Eggedal Parish in 1854 at age 19, and nothing more until he shows up in Houston County.. Family lore says that he and a cousin went to the gold fields in California, and on the way back carved their initials in Independence Rock in Wyoming. No proof of that has been found but it is a great story. I did get a picture from a cousin once of the initials E E carved in Independence Rock and they claimed it must be him!

Did he ever begin the naturalization process? Most folks accomplished the first step, filing a declaration of intention, in order to take a Homestead. That was a minimum requirement. Sometimes the Intention carries the information of the date of arrival plus the port of arrival in US.

Yes, I believe after he moved to Hanley Falls in the 1990's. I will try that.
