The first marriage of my great-great-grandmother Bertha Gurine Osmundsdatter was to Tollak Tollaksen son of Tollak Tollaksen in 1845

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1583/10433/54 #29

I hope to find his birth, baptism, and/or confirmation. Deciphering the scrawl in parish registers is a problem for me, especially occupations and place names.
I think knowing his father's occupation (illegible) would be helpful.

Tollak and Bertha had two children in Stavanger, then emigrated to America:
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1669/79 #305
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1669/241 #359
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/1669/386 #18

I have ruled out:
(1) Tollach Nicolai Tollachsen, because he married Gitlaug Tonnesdatter in 1850.
1825 Feb 17, birth, 1825 Mar 17, baptism, Tollach Nicolai Tollachsen https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8761/42700/88 Egersund parish register, #9,
1850 Jul 19, marriage, https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/6302/78846/15 Heskestad (Lund) local parish register, #8

(2) Tollak Loug Tollaksen, because he married in 1850 INGEBORG SOFIE NILSDTR. (1822-1850) and in 1854 ANNE MARTINE LARSDTR. (1833-)
1823 Mar 10, birth, 1823 Mar 16, baptism, Tollak Loug Tollaksen
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/15867/61 Sokndal parish register, #11

Others married:
Eli Larsdtr in Finnoy 21 April 1840,
Rakel Christine Ingebrectsdtr in Skaare 13 April 1853,
Elisabet Johannesdtr in StPetriKirke, Stavanger 1857,
Anne Amundsdtr in Sokndal 11 June 1857,
Johanne Gurine Aamundsdtr in Egersund 5 May 1857.

His title is Ungkarl (bachelor) Tollak Tollaksen, arbeidsmand (working man) Deciphering the column immediately after their names would be of value since it asks his birthplace and residence

In Tollef Andreas' baptism record, no occupation for Tollak is named. The Tastad after his name is the name of the farm they lived.

Here is the transcribed record of the 1845 marriage from Digitalarkivet. Might help with the reading of the original.

Link

This record lists his birth place as Frue Sogn

And the transcribed record for the confirmation of Tollak Tollaksen in 1839, born 1824.

The birth date 1834 is too late for the marriage in 1845. I am now considering Tollak Tollaksen Nedland of Bakke & Gyland, Vest Agder

1815 Sep 26, birth, 1815 Oct 8, baptism, Tollak Tollaksen Nedland

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/9408/45435/85 birth (Bakke)
https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/9413/122 #1 confirmation (Gyland)

I take Frue Sogn* to mean Frue Kirke Stavanger and Tastad to mean Tasta neighborhood of Stavanger, where they lived after the marriage. I have searched in vain for a birth or confirmation of Tollak Tollaksen in Stavanger and most of Rogaland.

T T Nedland was born 1815, age 30 at marriage where age was given as 26;
Bertha G. Osmundsdtr was born April 1823 (age 22 at marriage where age was given as 24 ) https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/8761/42700/71

I have yet to look for migration record Vest Agder to Rogaland.

Gyland Bygdebok writes about Tollak Tollakson Nedland, born 1815. He was married to Bolette Tollevsdtr Ryggeåsen. He emigrated to America in 1865 with wife Bolette and seven children, and settled in Corn-Prerie, Wisconsin.

Unfortunately, the online copy of the bygdebok is only available for Norwegian addresses. I can make some clippings if this is of interest, but I suppose the above is enough to eliminate this candidate?

Not sure where this will lead but I will explore better tomorrow.

Looking at any children for Tollak Tollaksen from around 1820 in Eigersund.

Jakobine born 1822 father is Tollak Tollaksen and mother is Marthe Tønnesdatter

Link

#26

Marriage of father Tollak Tollaksen and Marthe Tønnesdatter in 1822

Link

A Tollak born 7-10-1819 to Marthe Tønnesdatter but the father is Tønnes Pedersen.

Link

He is listed under Tollak Tønnesen for his confiramtoni in 1834.

Link

Must be two Marthe Tønnesdatter, one married to Tønnes Pedersen had several childen including one named Ane Maria in 1827.

The other Marthe Tønnesdatter married to Tollach Tollachsen had at least threee children, Jacobine 1822, Tønnes Nicolai 1825 and Tønnes Lorents 1826

Thank you, ToreL, I was suspecting he had married Bolette but could not fid the record of it. I am aware of that line in America, but they are unconnected to my family.. I have no need of the gyland bygdebok unless there is another Tollak that is a match.

Thank you, lyndal40, I know cases of step father patronymic, so that is possible.

There are many Tollak Tollaksens. Three of whom I have found birth records with father listed as Tollak Tollaksen or Tollach Tollachsen, but all three have been ruled out due to other marriages.

But probably not in this case. Here is a Tollak Tønnessen born in 1819 in Egersund with wife in the 1865 Census.

At the baptisms of Tollak and Bertha's first child, there is a witness named Anne Jorine Tollaksdtr, who might be Tollak's sister. Searching for her seems to be almost as difficult as searching for Tollak himself, but I did find this note under Austrått in Høyland Bygdebok. One Orm Torsteinsen (Tostensen elsewhere) married Anne Jorine Tollaksdatter, born in Hetland on Nov. 17. 1818.

There are geographical units on various levels named Hetland, and I not sure what it refers to. So far I have found neither the baptism nor the wedding, despite the exact dates that are given. Even so, I think this find is worth holding on to. If you look at the witness lists in the two baptisms, you find a mention of Tjensvold, which in the bygdebok is given as Anne Jorine's place of residence. At the second baptism you also find Anne Jorine's husband Orm Tostensen as a witness, as well as Orm's brother Johannes, also mentioned in the bygdebok.

https://media.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/6327/78898/50 #59 is tthe birth of Ane Jorine Tollaksdatter. The parents names are faint and hard to read. This Hetland = Frue Kirke Stavanger, very promising!

Re Frue and Hetland, this was related to this discussion at norwayheritage:
http://www.norwayheritage.com/snitz/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=3355&SearchTerms=frue,sogn

From Kåre:
"...No news about Tostad, but Frue Sagn or Frue Sogn is correctly a local sogn or parish in Stavanger, Stavanger Domkirke, The Dome...."

Frue and Hetland are found togetther:

I read the father's patronymic as Aslacksen.... and mother's as Andersdtr.
