Hello,
Im hoping someone can direct me in a good direction. Im helping my Wife Debbie Thompson with her Genealogy.
Her Grandfather was Roy Thompson. The only link above him is his Dad
Rasmus Thompson born about 1865 in Norway. I see him in 1910 US census. Married to Caroline J Thompson. Came into Oakland San Francisco area. late 1890 ? Ive done a search but am asking for help above Rasmus. From Norway possible name changes even slightly? Thomson? Any help is appreciated. Rasmus died in 1916 Oakland .
Regards Dave

There is no guarantee that his father was named Thomas (or some close variation), as I have seen immigrants from Norway with the last name Thompson, that had fathers with a wide range of names. They begin with T but beyond that there is not much consistency.

However if his father was named Thomas there are only about four children in the 1865 Norwegian Census that fit the parameter of being born between 1862 and 1865. They are:

Rasmus Thomassen of Skodje, Vatne, Møre og Romsdal

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038288002983

Rasmus Thomassen of Fitjar, Hordaland

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038229001721

Rasmus Thomassen of Bokn, Tysvær, Rogaland

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038217001943

And one slightly outside the box at birth 1861.

Rasmus A. Thommassen of Borgund, Giske, Møre og Romsdal

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/census/person/pf01038289001107

The four are all from different parts of Norway so it is extremely difficult to determine a good candidate without knowing where in Norway your Rasmus came from and about when he arrived.

According to the 1910 census, Rasmus and Caroline were married around 1905. Here (next to last couple) is a marriage record in San Francisco on Feb 18 1905 between Caroline J Hulton and Rasmus Thomson or Thomsen.

The above mentioned Rasmus Thomassen of Skodje, Tysvær, and Fitjar can all be ruled out.

Rasmus Elias Thomassen Bjørlykhaug, born 05-Sep-1862, Haavig, Skodje, Møre og Romsdal. Married in Norway in census-1910.
Rasmus Sevrin Thomassen, Tysvær, Rogaland, born 17-Dec-1864, died 27-Aug-1898.
Rasmus Tomassen, Fitjar Hordaland, born 03-Sep-1864, died 09-Jul-1913.

Thank you so much for your time ! So yes this is the info from that census i have seen. What would be the best way to find out his father and i think I have found Carolines mother and that is as far as its goes.Rasmus had only one son? Roy who is Debbies Grandfather . Since everyone is gone its hard to connect the dots. She has a few 4th to 6th cousins on Ancestry but we cant yet find the link? https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/156621840/family?cfpid=342063294748

As you can see above one of the other posters already eliminated the three best candidates that I proposed. The best thing that you can do is find out where in Norway, Rasmus is from. A big ask I know but without that it is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

If this record is accurate, he was born on Jan 9, 1864.

The fourth one from Borgund is in the 1875 Census.

Do you know where in Norway the 4th to 6th cousins are from. I assume you know of them from DNA testing

Limited to church records the Digitalarkivet has 2 Rasmus with birthdate of 9 Jan 1864:

https://www.digitalarkivet.no/en/view/255/pd00000002311222

But no obvious T for Thompson connections.

The marriage announcement of Rasmus Thomsen and Caroline Hultin published in the San Francisco Call on 19 Feb 1905 gives Rasmus' age as 39 and his residence as Dawson City.

The pastor who performed the marriage was Ole N(icholaisen) Grønsberg who was born 1855 in Vik, Yttre Sogn, Bergen and was a Lutheran pastor at San Francisco from 1880- to at least 1916. In 1914 + he was sjomannsprest at San Francisco also.

Any chance Rasmus could be this guy? I'm thinking Swert Tompson could be his brother, but haven't found any connection...

This looks to be Swert Tompson: Census-1865 Emigration 1883-05-01 Census-1900 Census-1910. His wife is likely Ragnhild Rasmusdr Sjaastad from Hjørundfjord, Møre & Romsdal

Regardless of any link to this Sivert Tompson; my gut feeling is that Roy Thompson's father came from the Sunnmøre region of Møre & Romsdal county, but not sure how much gut feeling should be considered when it comes to genealogy...

Middle may be Earl.

This may be Sivert's wife:

Here is a record of their marriage in MOMS:
NICOLLET Cert-16465 11/03/1884 THOMPSON, SIVERT B RASMUSSON, RAGNILD
