Hi all! I was wondering if I could get some help finding a passenger list for this couple, married on 29 April 1855 in Lærdal, Sogn og Fjordane. I am clear on the lineage of both already, but I can’t find when they came over. They settled and died in Crawford County, Wisconsin. Originally I had the wife of Anders Torsteinsen Seim as a Anna Jensdatter Seim, but I was incorrect. His wife is Anna Svendsdatter Seim, as is seen in the marriage record. Anything helps, thanks again!

What sources have you already checked?

US censuses for the listing of what year they came to US?

Lærdal parish records of persons leaving?

Any of the Lærdal Bygdebok volumes?

Seim farm is located in Årdal, which belonged to Lærdal parish at the time. According to Årdal bygdebook, they emigrated in 1856, together with their son Torstein, born 1855. They were listed in the church book as leaving the parish on April 16 1856. (#138--#140)

One of the sons Tosten T Seim lists arrival date as 1857 in 1900 and 1910 Census and 1858 in the 1920 Census. According to Family Tree they had three children in Norway before 1857, two of which died young. Seems as if they came over with one child. Tosten T Sime born about 1855.

If they came over as early as 1857/1858 it will be very difficult to find the emigration record. Sparse records for leaving Norway in that time frame. No records yet for arrival in Canada. Records do exist for some other places such as New York.

Here is a link to parish records for out-migration for Lærdal beginning with 1856.

Looking through the list, I find them leaving Lærdal in 1856

Numbers 138, 139, and 140.

Yep that’s them! I will check to try and find what ship they came over on. They should have departed from Bergen if my speculation is correct.

On the same day, April 16 1856, 132 people are registered in the Lærdal ministerial book as emigrating to America. The departures from Bergen that year listed at this site all went to Quebec:

Here is a list of "Confirmerede" at West Prairie Lutheran Church, Vernon County, Wisconsin. If the Andrew Andersen Seim right in the middle of the list from 1872 was a son of your Anders and Anna, he would have been "made in Norway".

It looks like these same church books also record the burial of Anders sr., so chances are that the younger Andrew was indeed a son. The book goes back to the 1850s and contains baptisms in 1856 and surrounding years, but with no trace of Anders jr., so his birth was probably elsewhere, perhaps in Dane county:

Here is some info on an apparanet daughter of Anders and Anna, born in Dane County, Wisconsin in 1859. And Here (seventh biography) is something about Tosten, confirming the start in Dane County.

You may know this already; I'm reporting it in case you don't.

Nils, the older brother to Anders Torsteinsen Seim, was the first person to emigrate from Årdal.
Together with wife Mari Tomasdotter Årebru (1821-1895), daughter Ingeleiv Nilsdotter Seim (1840-1912), son Torstein Nilsson Seim (1842-1917) and Nils' brother Tomas Torsteinson (1827- ), they emigrated from Seim in Årdal and left Bergen May 8th 1844 on the Bark "Juno". They settled in Cottage Grove, Dane County, Wisconsin.

Nils Torsteinsen Seim (1812-1878)
