Before presenting this case I’d like to express my gratitude to those patient and altruistic members of this forum who has helped me to solve previous issues hoping luck will strike again.

The couple had 2 kids born in Norway, Olga in 1894 and Osvald in 1899. Here is a link https://www.digitalarkivet.no/census/person/pf01036940001489

They emigrated to America and Osvald anglicised to Oswald. The unfortunate son of Oswald posted this unanswered thread at digitalarkivet.no:

Trying to locate blood relatives of my father, Oswald Johann Maarsund. I was adopted and renamed Robert Lincoln Gabardy. My Mother and Oswald were divorced and he returned to Norway in the early 1920's. I have never seen him. My father was last heard from in 1929, in a letter to my Step-Grandmother. He was living with an Aunt in Trondheim. Can anyone out there help me?

Here we see that Oswald had Maarsund as family name which is the place where the grandmother Johanna came from and the children were born. They might all have had Maarsund as their family name. As we can see the parents divorced and father Olai returned to Norway and Oswald at least was put up for adoption.

Their mother Johanna’s full name was Johanna Bergitte Wilhelmine Andrine Sakariasdatter and Andersen from her first marriage. A search for Johanna Bergitte Wilhelmine Andrine Sakariasdatter Gjelland gives this hit at myheritage.com

https://www.myheritage.no/search-records?action=person&siteId=327661851&indId=1500346&origin=profile

If it’s her she seems to have remarried again and her new family name is Jakobsen which I barely can read from the grave memorial. Full information here is only for paying members.

My first question is if someone can confirm if this is the mother of Oswald and Olga and provide more details on her life as a Jakobsen. Did she have more children? Did she marry a 4th time with more children? Where did she live and when and where did she die?

There is an odd feeling when trying to study this that Olga and Oswald were put up for adoption to different families and lost contact. In Oswald’s thread sister Olga isn’t mentioned at all. I’d like to learn if they were adopted to the same family or split and who the new guardians were? If there are declassified child protection documents I’d like to learn about them too.

Olga married Delmer Carl Hill and had 2 daughters. One of them Donna M Hill was born 1923 and I’m wondering if she died young or started a family?

Here is a link to an Oswald Johan Maarsund crossing into US from Canada in 1940:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XGTB-83D

Clearly Oswald knew about what happened to Olga as he lists her as his nearest relative in WWI draft registration card in 10 Sept 1919:

image: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-918L-9QB6?i=2568&cc=1968530&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AK87V-KB5
abstraction: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K87V-KB5

It appears he is laboring on a farm for D.C. Hill, Olga's husband?

He is also in this family tree database at familysearch.org, listing as married in US and dying in 1979.:
https://www.familysearch.org/tree/pedigree/landscape/LTJD-9JG

Is there more than one Oswald J O Maarsund as the Seattle Daily Times Thursday, Mar 09, 1950 Seattle, WA Page: 40 col 3 "Deaths" gives the information he died 6 March 1950, age 51 resident of 8277 Shaughnessy Street ?

Well his death certificate is available at familysearch.org:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DY7S-J5R

His parents are not known, his address at Shaughnessy street is where he lived in Vancouver, BC, engaged as a fisherman, and is married.

He married Ruby Mae Tomlinson in Washington in 1934:
image: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTM9-S9G3?cc=1534448&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQP93-GMHD
abstract: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP93-GMHD

His parents are named in the document but their names suffered in the reading of the handwriting, etc.

Olga Maarsund married D.C. Hill in Minnesota. This from MOMS:
MARSHALL F-581 02/24/1918 HILL, D. C. MAARSUND, OLGA

By 1930 they are living in Oil City, Venango county, Pennsylvania:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XHHX-4J5

Olga in FAG:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/70191140

It includes an obituary but of course, Oswald is not mentioned since he died 8 years earlier.

Here's the FAG obit:
Mrs. Olga Hill
Funeral services for Mrs. Olga Hill were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the Charles A. Morrison Funeral Home. Mrs. Hill died Thursday.
Rev. Harold Himes, pastor of the Bethal Methodist Church, officiated at the rite and internment took place in the Heckathorn Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Louis Birso, John Getz, Howard Buchanan, Elmer Beach, Willard Bolyon and Donald Feago.
Those attending the service from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Reese, Beverly, Thomas and Harry Reese, Jr., all of Oammonsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Exley of Erie.
(Obituary in The Derrick (Oil City, PA), Dec. 15, 1958, page 7)

Since the out of town visitors to Olga's funeral include the Harry Reese family (daughter Grace was married to Harry Reese) maybe Mrs Paul Exley is the other daughter?

There is a Paul Exley b 1920 living in Venango county, Pennsylvania in 1940:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KQ7Z-7C2

Paul Exley in FAG:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/119716186

Donna Mae Exley in FAG:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/119716213/donna-mae-exley

Donna M Exley in US Public Records database in Erie Pennsylvania (and also after her given date of death in FAG):

Osvald and Olga's parents were both widowed when they married on Sept. 12 1894 (#10). Olga was baptised three days later (#37), and Olsvald was baptised on March 3 1899 (#28).

Osvald's baptism record and the 1950 death certificate match perfectly and beyond any doubt concern the same person.

Johanna Bergitta's baptism. #53. Note Fjærvold, referred to in the marriage record.

Not as many first names as on the Myheritage page, but much of the other info there looks right.

I think the name Jacobson does not arise from a third marriage but rather from the use of her fathers last name.

Johanna and Olai's wedding record states that both are entering their second marriage.

Olai and Johanna Gjeltland/Gjelland - New version

Before presenting this case I’d like to express my gratitude to those patient and altruistic members of this forum who has helped me to solve previous issues hoping luck will strike again.

However the first version of this thread was terribly wrong due to some generation confusion but hopefully this one is better.

Here we see that Oswald had Maarsund as family name which is the place where his mother Johanna came from and Oswald and Olga were born. They might all have had Maarsund as their family name. As we know Oswald returned to Norway and his son was put up for adoption.

Olga and Oswald’s mother Johanna’s fulll name was Johanna Bergitte Wilhelmine Andrine Sakariasdatter and Andersen from her first marriage. A search for her with Gjelland as family name gives this hit at myheritage.com

https://www.myheritage.no/search-records?action=person&siteId=327661851&indId=1500346&origin=profile

If it’s her she must have divorced from Olai and her new family name is Jakobsen which I barely can read from the grave memorial. Full information here is only for paying members.

My first question is if someone can confirm if this is the mother of Oswald and Olga and provide more details on her life as a Jakobsen. Did she start a new family with children? Where did she live and when and where did she die?

If this is correct what happened to her former husband Olai? Did he start a new family and when and where did he die?

Oswald’s son was renamed to Robert Lincoln Gabardy. What was his original name?

Olga married Delmer Carl Hill and had 2 daughters. One of them Donna M Hill was born 1923 and I’m wondering if she died young or started a family?
