An answer to the question of where for at least one of the parents:
24 Sept 1901, Daily Illinois State Journal published at Springfield, Illinois page 6 col 3:
"Tedrow--Died, at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, Sept. 23, 1901, at the residence of her son, John Michaelson, 1204 South Eighteenth street, of typhoid fever, Mrs. Sarah Tedrow, aged 57 years.
Mrs. Tedrow is survived by but one son, who resides in this city, and two brothers, Henry and Benjamin Lawyer, of Mechanicsburg.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon at the family residence. The service will be conducted by Rev. J.E. Lynn, pastor of the Christian church. The remains will be laid to rest in Oak Ridge cemetery."

| Thanks for that information. It seems to connect a few more dots. I am still working the John Sr. angle because it would be more effective to trace him back to Norway if I can pin down his residence at the time of Naturalization. I still believe that to likely be Chicago. |

There was one Norwegian Lutheran congregation / church in Sangamon county. It was called "Springfield Menighet" It was formed about 1876 and was still in operation in 1890 when it had 70 members. The first pastor was H.C. Wynneken until 1890 and the next was J. Nordby.
Just curious, how do you know that John Mikelson had a naturalization record in 1880?

Thanks, I found that one, and I show no one named ruby in the Michaelson Household. There was a Ruth, but born 1914-15.
Currently searching for Aradanna, I know she is related and this is not a mis-spelling as I have an aunt named Ara- pronounced Airee. |

John Michaelson and Sarah Jane Lawyer were the parents of John Marion. When they got divorced the paper said John got custody of the CHILDREN. Like mscoast I know of no one other than John Marion.
I have a copy of John and Sarah's marriage certificate#1499 from IRAD. That's where the really old records are kept. They were married by Judge N.M. Broadwell The witness was the county clerk. I also have a copy of John W. Lawyer's estate who was Sarah Jane's father. It mentions that John Michaelson is due $5 for a horse.
Thank you jkmarler. Another family story. Ed's sister Betty said that the John Michaelson in Chicago used to get mail for OUR John Michaelson. I have been to Sarah Tedrow's unmarked grave.John Marion's home where her funeral was is now gone but you can tell what it looked like by the houses on that street. I believer her and William Tedrow were divorced too. I have found no naturalization record for John Michaelson.
Thank you JaneC, too! I have an obituary for Ruby Elizabeth Michaelson. She was 8 months and 5 days. She was John and Elizabeth's daughter. It mentions her sisters Pearl (from his first marriage), Claudine and Ara Adna.
I have a photo of John Michaelson that was given to his granddaughter Cecil (Ed's sister and my grandmother) which says Bloomfield, M. on the back! I've tried to use that as a clue?"

Bloomfield, Stoddard county, Missouri
Bloomfield Hills, Oakland county, Michigan
Other possibilities include Bloomfield as a township, rather than a town.
Any photographer's name on the picture?
Just to be clear it's of John Michaelson the father not John Marion Michaelson the son?
When was the divorce final? When did Sarah's father die?

jkmarler - No photographer logo or name on the photo. It is of John Michaelson and not John Marion. He looks older but my sister guessed in his fifties because he was a farmer and they worked hard.
John and Sarah's divorce was May 20, 1878. |

I didn't answer this question. I'm sorry. John W. Lawyer died 20 December 1872.
Still haven't found John Michaelson the father. BTW Elizabeth Michaelson listed the father's birth place as Denmark Norway on John Marion's death certificate. Is there a town in Norway named Denmark??? |

Here are John aged 35 and Sarah in the 1870 census as "Michaels" Cooper Township, Sangamon county, Illinois:

As far as I know there is no place called Denmark in Norway. Up until 1814 Norway was part of Denmark but according to his age in the census that was 21 years before your John was born, so not likely would someone born in Norway be mistaken as someone born in Denmark.
Have you found the sale of his farm land in Sangamon county records? |
