Takk Kåre. From what I can see, it is very challenging to translate and of course I do not speak Norwegian, although I am trying to learn a small amount. We really need a more precise translation, in order to determine if Herman Ludvig Mathisen was present or in Norway any of those years or if he was presumed dead or no where to be found.

If you care to weigh in on this issue, with a reference to the specific language in the document which provides the information, we would appreciate it greatly.

Best regards,

Eric.

Translating correctly Norwegian (Danish/Norwegian) law cases from 1888 to English can be difficult even if one speaks Norwegian, but it seems like the meaning, 40-50%, is ok translated.

Hello all,

I've been very fortunate to gain some correspondence regarding Maren this evening, if any of you are interested in taking a look. The handwriting is difficult, and we don't have a letter-for-letter translation, but it appears that there still is no record of cause for committing.

I am going to put these on my Google Drive for easy access. Please see the following link - I hope I set the access permissions correctly.

I will do my best in the translation of the words Google tranaslater has failed.
Some words make no sense.

Line 1 and 2;
Spsrgsmaalet (Spørgsmaalet); the Question
Umyndiggjørelse; Disempower
Utferdigelse; Formulate
Thinglysning; Publick registration of an agreement
Hgiesterets Botering? (Høysteretts votering?) Supreme cort voting.
Landhandler Hans Andersen; Merchant/General store Hans Andersen
Smaalenenes County; Todays Østfold County
Onsog?; (Onsøy?); a former parish in Østfold, merged with Fredrikstad 1994
Ordssreren ?? (Ordskriver??) Referent
Slipbsreder?? (Skipsreder??); Shipowner

I will need some time.

Thanks Kåre.
thats a great start.
some of the words wont make sense because the google translator did not properly read the original text. The font of the print is challenging to decipher. Sometimes it appears the word in the text has too many letters in it.
Every little bit helps complete another piece of the puzzle.
If a word dpesnt make sense our only option might be to reexamine the original case law text.

I will tell you that all of these developments have reinstilled in me a desire to travel to Norway as soon as maybe next summer. I have never been, but always have been drawn to do so. I even started looking at bed and breakfasts accomodations.

Oh, if you go, please try to find where to request Gaustad records. I've emailed several people hoping someone could point me in the right direction to request but I am hitting dead ends.

The 1865,1900 and 1910 censuses are online. The handwritten1891 census for the parish is also online, dif to navigate to get the correct sub parish.

Maren is not rec. in the 1910 census for Gaustad or in the death protocols from Vestre Aker parish (Aker merged with Oslo 1948) between 1900-1910 where Gaustad was located

Maren was in Gaustad for a few months at minimum. We now have a letter from Gaustad about her release. Her doctor wrote back saying he wished her to stay in Gaustad. She never ended up going back.

I tried to create thick letters with paranthesis, but it looks like most of the words are highlighted.

In the absence of any proper He in the estate and especially not from Louis MachisenS Vcerge has protested ot given Smaalenenes County and ONSS Fattigvcesen by those demanded Udlceg, cr no access for strangers to 'I meddle into it. A potential creditor at Louis Mathisen has Appell, not Abgang to interfere into Opgjor of Bo, where Louis Malhisen is heir. Anser Appell, the bercttiget to have the attention they paid back the legacy of alleged paid 600 Kr., He gets anlcegge Search against Louis Mathisen Vcerge. If he Dom for this Amounts, and he assumes that the regional authority and ONSS Fattigvcesen not have a right to keep what in virtue to Fattigl.s H 10 have them distributed, he obtains cmlcegge proceedings against them. But none of these questions is to Afgjsrelse here.
I come altsoa to the same result as Stiflsoverretlen. It will be seen that my recital of the matter is not quite falber with Stifts' ovcrrettens. But I assume the book, it may undgaoes for the reason that GIVC new Conclusion.
Appell, has in my opinion had so little reason to refer the case for Hoiesteret, that.He can not avoid paying Costs Costs for this right.

Good morning,
it is amazing to me just how much additional information each of the you have been able to add to our norwegian long lost family. I have been absent from this discussion for a couple years and your contributions have reinvigorated my energies.

In making a google search of Herman Ludvig I stumbled across a document of some legal proceeding I believe may possibly be my great great grandfather. I spent a couple hours attempting to translating the contents on page 101 through 107 with little luck other than a word or 2.

Update:

I requested Clara's records from the Coldwater home, only to find that she must not have been there. There are no records. She also looked at Severine's records; no mention of Clara.

The Gaustad records pulled from the Norway national archives say Maren had "dementia".

Maren's doctor was F. Giebelhausten, who was both the doctor and the mayor of Fredrikstad at the time.

I've had no success yet trying to obtain the full records from Gaustad.

We did find this, which appears to indicate the start of all of these events, and the collapse of the family. http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-tl20080804010898.jpg

What are we looking at?
what is the source?
which portion applies to our family?
what specifically does it say?

thanks in advance.
