Hi Trunk rescuer Judy,
I assume the address on the Pauline's trunk is 909 West Superior Street in Duluth. Does that address still exist and when Pauline came stateside what was there, another family member perhaps?

Hi Judy,
Apparently a few family members were traveling companions of Ingeborg Engen (as long as she was also known as Belle Engen!); This from www.genealogybank.com, Duluth News-Tribune. 2 Dec 1909:
"...A large party left yesterday for Christiania. In the party were Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Goldbloom, George Slette, Gustav Slette, Theodore Moberg, and Belle Engen..."
In the UK Incoming passenger lists 1878-1960 at Ancestry.com: dated 12 Dec 1909, on Baltic, arriving Liverpool, all from Norway with tickets of Christiania to Liverpool:
George Slette, printer, age 33; Gustaf Slette (indexed as Slitte), laborer 23, Belle Engen age 25 domestic
This may be "the" George Slette above, would need documentation of some kind to confirm, from www.mnhs.org Minnesota Death Index:

Pauline O. Haugen went to 909. Vest Suprior Str. - Duluth. Minnesota -
Ingeborg Engen was heading for Louis Anderson living in 109 W. 7th St. in Duluth - same place or very near one another?

This from Rowberg Biographical File. Here are the survivors mentioned in an obituary of Mrs. Pauline Flotten, published in the Duluth Skandinvaven, 23 June 1961 abstracted & translated:
mann: Andrew
2 sons; Inge of Duluth; Oscar of Stillwater, Minnesota
5 daughters: Mrs. Oscar Thompson; Mrs. J.C. Buckley; Miss Annie Flotten, Mrs Marie Kothlow all of Duluth; Mrs. M.P. Larson of Stillwater;
1 brother: Gustaf Slette of Innisfail, Alberta, Canada
1 sister: Mrs. H.E. Lee of Duluth
Her obit also tells that she was a resident of Duluth for the last 70 years, that she married Andrew on 16 Nov 1895 in First Lutheran Church of which she was also a member.

Since Judy lives there maybe she can answer the geography question better than online map services.
However, Google finds on map 909 West Superior Str at a bend in Hiway 194, fairly near the water of the lake.
The Duluth Public Library has Duluth city directories back to 1883. Judy may want to check in them for the names and also to see if the directories have a section (as some editions have) in which you may look up an address. |

Wow, it is amazing, truly, what you can find online!
I do not know how long ago it happened, but the city of Duluth removed a large portion of Superior Street to put in a 'connector road' where three larger roads meet. The part of Superior Street that was lost is right around what would have been West 9th Avenue - or 909 West Superior.
The next street up from Superior is 1st street, followed in succession by 2nd, 3rd, etc., to 7th street. So it was only 7 blocks up the hill, then 9 blocks over -- from 1st Avenue to 9th Avenue, for the friends to visit one another. Not too far to go, especially after crossing the ocean together!
Received a lot of items related to First Lutheran Church which is still very active here in Duluth, and I plan on getting them all together and giving them to the church. Have many old Norwegian Bibles and books too. I am becoming a Norwegian by proxy, which is peachy by me! |

Of course, no date of submission and sources but rarely cited.
Some of the things found are duplicated in it for instance George Slette d in 1916 may indeed be Jørgen Slette as in the record he's given a death year of 1916.
There is a Gina Anderson in the Minnesota death index dying in St. Louis in 1946 and Guri is given a death year in the file of 1946.
Ole Slette is a curiosity because there is also an Ole O. Slette in the Canadian digital archives Western Land Grants database, perhaps it's he?

Hi Jackie,
I have a hard enough time trying to keep up with the Pauline/Marie Slettahaugen I "know." Going beyond that family -- which I believe is what is being talked about now (and why I would not be good at doing the great detective work you do!) -- makes my brain start to melt.
Stacy, Minnesota is a cute little town which I know is full of Scandinavians. Had to look up where Tracy, Minnesota was, since I'd never heard of it before. Now I know it is right by Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, a little southwest of Minneapolis.
Maybe I am tired now and tomorrow all these new names and places will make sense to me. Either way though, I am grateful for all the searching you (and everyone else) are doing.

I am the great great granddaughter of Marie "Mari" Slettehaug & Louis Larson and Guru "Gina" Sleetehaug & Louis Anderson. Regina (Mari's daughter) and Arthur (Guri's son) married and are my great grandparents. I started tracking our family history about 4 years ago and have been able to go back quite far. I would love to share any information with you and I am interested in what you may have. I saw that you have some family trunks.
