My 3 great grandfather, Peder Johannsen, is listed as a 'national soldat' in the 1801 census.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01058360000255

Being a soldier was not a career, as he is back on the Kalsem gċrd by 1804, married, and starting a family.

Does anyone know of a source to find out where a 22 year old soldier might have served, or been doing at that time?

A "National soldat" National soldier was called to duty and not enlisted.

Peder was soldier in Vesterlenske Infantry Regiment which consisted of 1. 2. and 3. Nasjonale Bataljon "National Batallion.
I am not sure which battalion Peder Johannsens belonged to, probably 3. National battalion.

A curiosity; My ancestor Jacob Friderich was captain in Vesterlenske Regiment 1789.

Thank you for your fast and very informative response! I agree with Jane; your wealth of knowledge is amazing and appreciated. I think this is what makes genealogy interesting; learning what our ancestors did in their lives instead of just names and dates. Thank you also for the military site information.

It sounds like your ancestor was career military, while mine was called off the farm for a young man's adventure.

You are welcome.
Yes, he was a career military as his many brothers. He served in the army from age 17 when his father died.
This family, Zernichow, fought in many wars against the Swedes for generations

One source is the organization of the Norwegian army 1628-1817 in Norwegian link

My main source is National Archivist Huitfeldt Kaas 64 pages booklet on the Zernichow family in Norway, also this only in Norwegian link

Between 1760-1779 ca 77 % of Norways expenditures went to the defence, but at that time was the sosial costs minimal.

My ancestor was also listed National Soldier at 22 in 1801.
At what age were they drafted and for how long?
