New information from common relatives found at Ancestry.Ca tells me that Sarah Hannah Nelson immigrated from Norway at the age of 13 years old. Any ideas on where to go with this information? I've hit a dead end trying to find her ancestry. At this point I'm not sure that this is Sigrid Jorgensdat ???

A Sarah Johnson in Boone county is said to have been Sigvor Ellevsdatter, Turevold in Norway, see .

Her baptismal record is #8. Parents Eilev Christophersen and Elie Andersdatter, Turevold.

Sarah was obviously married to Nels Johnson in 1850 (they both emigrated 1845).

Nels was Niels Johannesen in Norway, his baptismal record is #48. His parents were Johannes Nielsen and Kari Nielsdatter, Orvedahl.

Thanks Einar ......but my Sarah Johnson was married to Andrew Johnson in 1865, Boone County Illinois. I have all the information on Sarah and Andrew from the date of their marriage until their death in Nebraska. What I can't find is who Sarah was before her marriage to Andrew. Family information says she immigrated as a 13 year old from Norway. Her marriage certificate calls her Sarah Hannah Nelson...and I would assume that "Nelson" would be her anglicised name upon entering America. Her tombstone says born in 1840.....but thanks for your efforts. One other question ...is "Sigrid" a common Norwegian name for a women ?? I don't find many "Sigrid" names when I'm pouring through the parish records.

Einar - This is what I'm working from. This list of Long Prairie residents from 1870 shows Andrew Johnson and Sigrid Jorgensdatter on the same line ....I assume from this that they are a couple. What is your opinion on this?

Yes, Sigrid is a common female name in Norway. (Maybe not in all parts of the country.)

quote:
A. Johnson Sec. 15 is Andrew Johnson (Anders Johanneson Kleven 1840-1925 Nebr. and Sigrid Jorgensdatter and Nilsdatter _____ 1840- between 1910-1915 Nebr. Moved to Nebraska

I believe it is reasonable to conclude that Sigrid was Andrews wife. Why she has been given two surnames is difficult to say, maybe she had Jørgensdatter from her birth and Nilsdatter (or Nelson) from her first marriage - if the marriage to Andrew was her 2nd one.

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?uid=179769&urnread_imagesize=gigant&show=258#bunnen

This entry in the Telemark Seljord parish records (page 484, October 1853, lines 57/58) has Bjornsen family from Bokhuus moving to "Drangedal" ?? They are from the same "farm" as Jorgen Bjornsen so I'm wondering if they may be connected.

Can you translate what is happening here please ...where are they going to ??

page 737 Drangedal 1853 lines 55 to 63 .........translation here please. I may be grasping at straws but could this be Jorgen and Ingeborg Knudsdat and family including Siri Johanna = Sarah Hannah as a 13 year old daughter immigrating to America ??

Even Bjørnsen (23) and Torkel Bjørnsen (20) was going to Drangedal.
They were both born on Bækhus.

How are you connecting this Norwegian family to Sarah Nelson who married Andrew Johnson in Boone County, Illinois, and died in 1904 in Nebraska? Do you have Sarah's parents' names from a death record (or other), or her day-month-year of birth? The name and age certainly line up well.

In the posted entry, seems to be this same family going to Nord Amerika in 1853.

Gaardmand (farmer) Jørgen Nielsen Bøe age 42
and wife Dorthe Knudsdatter age 40
their children
Anne Maria Jørgensdatter age 15
Siri Johanne " age 13
Anne Jørgine " age 11
Nils Jørgensen Bøe born 17 Dec 1843
and Knud " born 24 May 1846
Mariken Chirstine Jørgensdatter age 4 years
Tone Jørgine " age 2 years
-- all seemingly in the same family group

Here's a link to a genealogy for
Jørgen Nilsen Bøe b Jan 29, 1812 Tørdal, Drangedal, Telemark
wife Dorthe Knudsdatter Støle b Jan 16, 1813 Sannidal, Telemark

Jane: I did as you suggested ...follow up on the creator of that website ....and he had nothing helpful. I'm sorry that this has become rather confusing. The information that I have on Sarah Hannah Nelson comes from living family members that are great grandchildren of Sarah. ...I have spent the last few months tracking the genealogy of Andrew (her husband). I have built a detailed picture of both Sarah and Andrew in the USA and have very successfully documented them and the sources back from when they lived and died in Nebraska ...including their tombstones back to Andrews birth in Norway and his live in Illinois. I know that Andrew was a Sargent in the Civil war and what company he belonged to....I have a copy of their wedding certificate ...I have looked for obituaries and death records and the best I have found is the information from living relatives that I have shared. I didn't think it necessary to share all of this information as I feel confident in my research and felt it would not help trace the genealogy back from the marriage certificate of 1865.I apologise if I have not followed proper etiquette on this forum. ....but I thought this information would be redundant. I have exhausted all research avenues available to me and that is why I reached out to people that I have connected with at Ancestry.ca that have some distant connection to my family tree. Their information has been very helpful and has cross referenced as accurate with the factual information that I have. The link that I used does work ...just turn the page back one page. I don't know why it does that but that that is why I include the page number in the written portion.

Thanks lorne. My question had been not about your path but rather about your records. What does the 1900 census say about Sarah's date of immigration? Have you found the Nelsons in 1860 in Illinois? Records not posted in the forum are not redundant to forum participants. We don't have what you have. Posting a source is not so much a question of etiquette - sources are essential building blocks of research. Your message is wonderfully gracious, but adds no data or sources.

Jane: this was a result of following the Bjornsen family name from Seljford to Drangedal .....immigration records from Seljord showed two Bjornsen family members moving to Drangedal so I started looking for immigration records under Drangedal going to America. It was purely by coincidence that I came across this family. Again I'm grasping at straws here to try to find Sarah's information. The Long Prairie information calls her Sigrid Jorgensdatter, her tombstone gives her birthdate as 1840, and the "family information" that I have says she was 13 years old at immigration and her name Sarah Hannah. Perhaps I found the needle in the haystack ?? It would also coincide with the name 'Nelson" that she uses on her marriage certificate. Everything seems to line up ...but I'll do some more research on USA census information on this family. Thanks for your input ....really appreciated !
