Thanks for the link lorne. Oops - I deleted my posts before reading your request that I not delete them. Sorry! I did see that you posted a transcription of the marriage record and again thanks for that.

About the links: That link you posted only works for 30 minutes.
On the church book page, at the top is a bluish bar. Find the word
Bildeinformasjon. Next to it is a little box that says "Ingen." Click that to find a drop down menu. Select Øverst, and you'll see more information appear on the blue bar.

You'll see this:
Kildeinformasjon: Telemark fylke, Seljord, Ministerialbok nr. I 11 (1831-1849), Fødte og døpte 1839, side 60.

And this:
Permanent sidelenke (with a url)

And this:
Permanent bildelenke (with a url) This url is in blue. Copy and paste it into the forum to create a permanent link to the image of the selected church book.

Here's what happens when I do that:
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1450-kb20051005061027.jpg

Hope that helps.

If you have questions about the procedure, don't hesitate to ask.

Ok. So since Luther was newly elected as a judge in 1865 (specific date needs checking), this mid-November 1865 wedding might have been a civil ceremony....

Below not a terribly fabulous match (to the mother in the Nielsen Boe family):

1860 census Boone, Boone, Illinois
living next to some Knutesons
Dorothy Nelson 50 b Illinois widow
Nelson Georgeson 16 b Illinois

Since Andrew served in the Civil War and married November 1865, he has perhaps newly returned home, possibly met Sarah through a brother who served - just throwing out a remote possibility.

Lorne, could you post your service records for Andrew? Dates of service, unit with which he served, etc? Don't know if that will be fruitful and possibly not. So far haven't found the Nielsen Boe family in 1860 as Nelsons (or variants, such as Boe) with a daughter Sarah or a nearby Sarah "working out" at a farm, as a domestic, or the like.

Do the life records (for example death records) for Sarah's children confirm her maiden name is Nelson? Women marrying for the second time might be recorded with their first husband's surname.

Here's a Sarah age 21 born Norway, married to a Nels Nelson in Mission, LaSalle, Ilinois in:
1860

I'm not proposing her as a candidate, not at this time.

Andrew Johnson joined the WI 15th Infantry, Company A. The men of Company A called themselves the "St. Olaf's Rifles." They were also known as the "Sailor Company" because of the large number of seamen in its ranks, and as the "Chicago Company" because so many of its members were residents of that city. The army listed him as living in Boone County, IL, age 20, and unmarried. He enlisted for three years on October 10, 1861 at Chicago, and mustered on November 15, 1861 at Madison, WI as a Private (Menig). He was promoted to Sergeant (Sersjant). He served as a wagoner with the supply unit. He was absent with division supply train on September 16, 1863. He was absent sick in Chattanooga, TN since November 28, 1863. He mustered out with Company on Chattanooga, TN on December 20, 1864.

Jane: Interesting thought about Sarah being married previous to Andrew. I thought it pretty conclusive that her maiden name "Nelson" was derived from her father's last name "Neilsen". ......anglicised to "Nelson" upon immigrating to America. She was just 13 years old at that time so would make sense to take her father's name. All of her children were born after the wedding date of 1865 ....so no indication of a child from an earlier marriage. Living family contacts that I've referred to indicate her maiden name to be Sarah Hannah Nelson. I'll post their comments as well.

My brother said "Here is what I have on the Johnson family!! Andrew Johnson Born in Norway 10-15-1841 came to USA when 3 years old with his parents, settling at Albany, Wis. In his teens ran away from home & joined the Union Army at age of 20 with the Wis. Infantry,Co.A, 15th Regement. Was discharged as Sargent 12-20-1864 at Chattanooga, Tn.
Sara Hannah Nelson born in Norway came to USA at age 13 Andrew & Sara married in 1866 had 6 children
The Johnson family came by Train to Bloomington, Ne. in 1880 & by covered wagon & Homestedded about 4 miles N of Cambridge,Ne. lived there for 14 years, then went by covered wagon to Selma, Ten. for 4 year then returned to Cambridge & lived the rest of their lives. George Ole Johnson born 4-7-1873 at Capron, Ill. Married Clara M. Spath born 6-25-1895 Holbrook, Ne. Married 12-26-1918
Andrew & Sara's kids George, John, Christena, one son died on the trip back from Tn. don't know much about the other two"

There is a one year old "Cecelia" that wouldn't be accounted for in her marriage to Andrew.

Jane : I like this one.....its the right age for both Dorothy and her son Nels Jorgensen....to bad no mention of other family members. Interesting that there are Knudsens next door ....including a Sarah.

Interesting that Sigrid Jorgensdatter ( parents Jorgen Bjornsen and Ingeborg Knudsdat) and Siri Johanne Jorgensdat (parents Jorgen Nielsen and Dorthe Knudsdat) were born just one day apart September 18 and 19, 1839. .....and the mothers are both Knudsdat !! I'm favoring Siri Johanne as my candidate based on the "family information" indicateing she was 13 years old when immigrated and the middle initial that Sarah Hannah Nelson used right to her tombstone.

Thanks for the info lorne.

Do the life records (for example death records) for Sarah's children confirm her maiden name is Nelson?

You mentioned you didn't find Sarah's death certificate or obit. Did you search online only - or did you write to the cemetery and/or county in Nebraska where she died?

Norwegians in the Civil War, Vesterheim Museum
Other Norwegians in the Civil War here, including Andrew brothers-in-arms in the Wisconsin 15th, some of whom are named Nelson, Nielsen, etc (too many, in fact)

15th Wisconsin

About mothers being Knudsdatters: just a coincidence. We don't know the name of Sarah's mother. Need Sarah's day-month-year of birth, birth place, parents names, and any siblings.

The two candidates for Sarah can be ruled in or out, possibly, by tracking them forward in time. You subscribe to Ancestry.com I believe. Have you had any luck finding the Nielsen Boes in America?

Which Sarah are you wanting information on? Siri Johanne siblings you listed earlier.....birthdates for both Sarah's just three messages above.

I've had no luck finding Nielsen Boes in America as yet. ....although I like your post 1860 Boone Census for Dorothy and Nelson .

The Sarah you need information on is your Sarah. Need to confirm her maiden name is Nelson. Her children's life records (birth, death, etc) may list her maiden name. Her husband's obit might. Her marriage record may or may not use her maiden name. Einar pointed that out earlier. Need her date of birth (day and month and year), place of birth, and/or parents' names. Too bad the creator of that website (Long Prairie) told you nothing. Where did he/she get that info?

You said you could not get her death record. Where did you look? Online only? Did you write to the county where she died in 1904? How about the cemetery? Do you have her date of burial? If so you can seek an obit. You'll have to focus on developing identifying information about YOUR Sarah. A name and year of birth is all we have, and name is not confirmed. Date of immigration might be correct but source is iffy.

If the Nielsen Boes can be found near Sarah, we like their Siri Johanne better as a candidate, but their proximity would not confirm her identity. Don't misunderstand, I like Siri as a candidate, but main focus of your research needs be your Sarah.

Crossing fingers some more clues about your Sarah emerge!

I understand what you're saying. I've found others listing the Jorgen Neilsen/ Dorthe Knudsdat family on Ancestry and have asked if they have more information.....I've also looked for obits for all the children and husband Andrew on find-a-grave but nothing yet....still searching. A letter to Furnas County Nebraska is a good plan. I have an email for the creator of the Long Prairie info and can ask him where he found this information. I've also ordered a book about Norwegians in Illinois before 1855. Something will turn up.

You could be a bit more proactive about this instead waiting for someone else to post the obits. At the Chronicling America newspaper site these are the titles that have been microfilmed of Cambridge Nebraska papers. The list could be studied in more depth (as there are always missing issues and that sort of problem) but at the click of a button you can find a library or institution which has the microfilmed copy and might be willing to search (depends on their policy, etc.) or possibly loan the film (for a fee) through ILL:
