As a follow up to that long! comment -- "Long Prairie Norwegian Farm Families in Boone County 1870" includes:

Nels Georgeson Haatvedt 1849-1917 and wife Christi Knudsdatter 1845-1925.

Which fits with a couple of census records we've looked at before - and I'll add some. The 1900 Census tells that Nels Georgeson was born in December - which fits with the brother of Siri Johanne Jørgensdatter (see page 10).

Thanks Jane...I've followed this family thinking it might be my Jorgensen family but the Haadvedt farm name doesn't work as the Jorgensen family use the farm name Bo. Going back to the Long Prairie Norwegian Farm Families in Boone 1870 data ....I questioned the genealogist Martin Johnson who posted the data ......I asked what the "-------" means in front of the name Nilsdater .....this is his reply:

____ for this entry means the fathers last name may be fathers first name.

the scadinavian paternal naming system is complicated.

a son or dtr. surname is the fathers first name with a sen or son added.

also in church records the name of a village or farm is sometimes added to the end of a name,

making is look like their last name.
martin johnson

Does this make any sense to you? I get the patronymic name thing but...??? Perhaps there was an assumption that Sarah could be a Nilsdater because she took the name "Nelson" as her maiden name ???

Jane: I've liked the Georgeson family as a candidate for Siri's family ...and Nels as her brother Nils ......but the farm name Haadvedt encouraged me to dismiss it. What do you think ?

Need further study. I'm with you, but it's possible for a person /a family to use more than one farm name... I think there are are several Haatvedt farms in Telemark.

You are doing the right things. For one, you got confirmation (beyond the marriages record of Andrew and Sarah) that her maiden name was Nelson. She didn't marry under the surname of a first husband.

Martin Johnson's reply not too clear. Jørgen Nilsen Boe should have a child Jorgensdatter, or Jorgensen, or Nilsen, or Bo, or even another farm name from the family background ( plus Americanized versions of those names). All could be used at different times and places during a life. "Jorgensdatter" and "Nilsdatter" cannot both be correct. If we saw the original records maybe we'd understand the dilemma.

Sarah and Andrew did have a son George, seemingly second son - which is an Anglicization of Jorgen (obviously). Their son John seems to be first-born and seemingly named for Andrew's dad Johannes.

A new finding is a record stating Nels Georgeson was born in TELEMARKEN. Did you notice?

Are you going to be able to see the Long Prairie church records for yourself?

I did notice the record stating Nels was born in Telemarken ...more evidence that this could be the Jorgensen family. Also the immigration date and birthdates are within the realm of realising the Georgesons as being Jorgensens ...the different farm/village name troubles me ....I don't believe Haatvedt is in Telemark County....?? ..as you say, needs further study. I found two individuals on Ancestry with common Georgeson ancestry and asked if they could shed any light....one contributor was going to ask her family in Norway if they could help.

I'm working with the librarian at IDA Library Belvidere Illinois on the Long Prairie Parish records. I don't have direct access but she seems to be very accommodating. I will post her findings.

At the Chronicling America newspaper site these are the titles that have been microfilmed of Cambridge Nebraska papers. The list could be studied in more depth (as there are always missing issues and that sort of problem) but at the click of a button you can find a library or institution which has the microfilmed copy and might be willing to search (depends on their policy, etc.) or possibly loan the film (for a fee) through ILL:

28. Cambridge clarion [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 1899-current
29. The Cambridge kaleidoscope [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 1898-1899
30. The kaleidoscope [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 1896-1897
31. The Cambridge kaleidoscope [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 186?-1896
32. The combine edition [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 1952-1952
33. The advertiser [microform]. ([Furnas County, Neb.) 188?-18??
34. Cambridge chronicle [microform]. (Cambridge, Furnas County, Neb.) 1887-18??

Here a possible route was suggested by Jackie, to finding an obit for Sarah H Nelson Johnson (or any other clue). Time- consuming, I know, but worth a shot.

Andrew's family in Boe was living at or near the same place as Siri's family - the same Boe, right? So we would prefer a Haatvedt farm in the neighborhood. Have I got that right?

10 Sep 1841 at baptism of Anders (Andrew Johnson) a godparent has farm name Kaasa - a name that also occurs in the Long Prairie Lutheran Church records. So is this a colony of immigrants who had been neighbors? Think last year I read a history of the congregation - forgotten some stuff.

If Sarah is Siri and the Long Prairie is home parish to Siri's brother Nils / Nels - if - then why don't Andrew and Sarah marry in that church?

Lorne, do you think it might be worth asking for a look up in Long Prairie church book, see they did have a religious ceremony...

Here's something I hadn't noticed before. In the posted transcription of the 1900 census, in Furnas county, Nebraska (page 8), Sarah is listed born in October. Siri was born in September.

BUT Andrew is also listed born in October - and has been found to have been born in September. This increases my confidence that Sarah's birth month could be in error.

1900 census lists Sarah's date of immigration as 1854 - which fits with immigration of Siri and family (and fits with Nels Georgeson in Long Prairie).

I don't put a lot of faith in birthdates on the census reports. The months and even the birth year can vary. I suppose it would depend on who was in the home when the census recorder came to the door on how accurate the dates were.
It could be that the families lived in proximity to each other in Norway. ....although they immigrated 10 years apart ....1843 and 1853.

It doesn't surprise me that Andrew and Sarah had a civil marriage. He was the much youngest brother ...20 years younger than his oldest brother ...and as a teen was living alone with his elderly mother Cornelia. Family stories has it that he ran away from home to join the Union army (under aged) and soon after being mustered out he married Sarah. It was a double marriage ....his nephew (about the same age as Andrew) was married at the same date ....I have a picture of the 4 of them. I guess I saying that I don't think he was a strong Lutheran. He was just an infant when his family immigrated so would have considered himself an American ....perhaps a bit of a renegade?? .....just speculation knowing he was fatherless and his mother quite elderly when he was still quite young.
Good information on the Georgeson family. I still have them in my tree as potential Jorgensens. There now is just too much information that collaborates to ignore them. thank you for helping to pull that together.
I look forward to what the IDA librarian can find. Stay tuned !

"A History of Norwegian Immigration to the United States from the Earliest Beginning to the Year 1848" -author calls Long Prairie a "Sogning Settlement"

Chapter on Long Prairie starts here:
"In the vicinity of the present village of Capron, Illinois, a few Norwegians located in 1843, forming the nucleus of what later came to be known as Long Prairie. This settlement is located only a few miles south of Jefferson Prairie (which extends into Illinois) and is about sixty-five miles distant west from Chicago. The earliest Norwegian settlers here were Thor Olson Kaasa..." etc

I just received an email from IDA library that she will have a package of information for me by Tuesday next week....including an obit for Nels. I've also found living relatives of Nels still living in Illinois that I'm trying to contact. I'll read the link ....looks very interesting !

New information. I have located the obituary of Anna Mary Georgeson. ....oldest sister of Nels Georgeson. The oldest daughter of Jorgen Nilsen Boe was Anna Marie Jorgensdatter. ....sister of Nels Jorgensen. The birthdate is the same, immigration the same. More information is coming.

... and the Jørgen Nilsen Bø family came from Tørdal!

I don't see Anna Maria's birth date posted. You say the obit date of birth 07 April 1838) matches the Norway birth dob?

(Back in an edit - dob posted page 9 is 04 March 1838. Need to recheck.)

If so, then this obituary confirms that it is indeed Siri's family we noticed in Capron, Boone, Illinois.

Thank you all at this site for your patience ....especially "JaneC " who was both very encouraging and supportive in this quest to find Sarah. I was sure I was on the right track ...and had convinced myself that I was.....but I needed confirmation from you before I could let it rest. You have not heard the last of me ! ...........Lorne
