Erik is not in Norway in 1910. The 1910 census lists his wife and children. His name is included with theirs, but he is not living with them. A note on his name says, "America, away for four years." [per Gramtrans translator] The whole note, as posted on page 1, is: "Jernbanearbeider. Merknader: utgaar. Overstreka. Antatt oppholdssted: Amerika, 4 aar borte." Also, Harold's family story says Erik left when his wife was still expecting their last child in 1906 and never returned. This story agrees with the public records found so far.

Just suppose that Erik actually abandoned his family in Norway and became Erik something else, but kept the same basic facts about his life.

So here is a small list of Erik born 1879-1880 in Norway who came to US in 1906 found in the 1910 census (when he is still assumed to be alive per mother's census entry and his Norway family as alive but gone):

Erick Moland b.1879 Norway single udv 1906 living in Reed, McKenzie county, N.D.

Erick Marond b. 1880 Norway single udv 1906 living in Cummings, McKenzie county, N.D.

Eric O. Hessevold b. 1880 Norway single udv 1906 living in Stoughton, Dane county, Wisc.

And those Erik with similar patronymic last names (Erik's father's name was a "double" Hans Olai)

Erick N. Hansen b. 1880 Norway single udv 1909 living in Nueces county, Texas

Erick Hanson b. 1880 Norway single udv 1903 living in Superior, Douglas county, Wisconsin

Erik Olson b. 1879 Norway single no udv date living in Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota

Searches like this without a specified last name or even lacking a first and last name but with some or all of the other basic biographical data can be made at familysearch. The 1910 census is critical to find Erik because the family tradition has him dying in 1918.

Yes - Erik could be on your list. As an outside chance Erik could use his father's patronymic - highly unlikely, but another idea in the "long shot" mode. One would think the World War I draft registration 1917-1918 should show a person with his day-month-year of birth, so perhaps he died before that.

Probably the likeliest explanations are
1) that Erik died before 1910 (recall the many family stories we've heard that are mistaken about the death date of a person distant in time and place - and the death story came from Harold's mother many years later).
2) that Erik is indeed listed in the US 1910 census and/or in a death record but the name is mangled in transcription
3) that Erik's death was not recorded, which could happen for various reasons

Many leads to living descendants in the family have been posted, and it is possible some one of them has a family story re. Erik.

One can search the 1910 US Census for an Eri*, born 1879 +/- 2 in Norway and arrival 1906. Turns out that not many people fit that criteria.

Euch Egge
[Erick Eggs]
Brighet Brooklyn Ward 6, Kings, New York abt 1878 Norway Head (Born Oct 18 according to his WWI Draft App)

Eril Elliot
[Eriel Elloed]
Duluth Ward 5, Saint Louis, Minnesota abt 1877 Norway Lodger

Eric O Hesswold
[Eric O Hessevold]
Stoughton Ward 1, Dane, Wisconsin abt 1880 Norway Lodger

Erick Marond
[Erick Moland]
Reed, McKenzie, North Dakota abt 1879 Norway Boarder

Eark Moland
[Erick Moland]
Cummings, McKenzie, North Dakota abt 1880 Norway Head

( Could be the same person as the person directly above, one listing shows him living with his uncle Martin Gartland, some information indicates he was born in Molland} (Probably Erick Hoegenson Mollen born April 18, 1878 according to his WWI record. ) (Actually there are two of them, in the 1930 Census, one is still living in North Dakota and one lives in Washington State. )

Erick Rassmusson
[Erick Rasmussen]
Anna Maple Grove, Barron, Wisconsin abt 1881 Norway Head
{Born 21 Sept 1880 on SS Death Index}

Erick Refting
[Erick Refling]
Cummings, McKenzie, North Dakota abt 1881 Norway Head

I took a look into the ELCA church archives for Lonning funerals and didn't find Erik but did find his mother. I had searched previously for her in the North Dakota Public Death Index and and was unable to find her.

The record may be from the Warwick Lutheran church (but that is far from certain) in Nelson county, North Dakota. The 2 Brunsvik brothers and their mother or relative Ingeborg are also in the listings. The dates begin in 1910. The pages are not numbered.

In 1939, entry #2 my paraphrase
Mrs. Marie Lonning (the o in Lonning is marked with umlaut)
age 85, d. 24 Apr 1939, bur 27 Apr 1939; listed as not a church member.

(Halvor Brunsvik is on the same page as Marie only listed in the 1938 entries. Only additional piece of information is his burial date of 12 Oct 1938)

on previous page are:
Eysten Larsen Brunsvik
age 60 d. 28 Jan 1918 bur. 1 Feb 1918
b. Surendalen, Norway
unmarried
d. of kroft (the o or e is marked with umlaut)

and an elderly Ingeborg who may be the woman who lives with Marie Lonning and the Brunsviks in the 1910 census recorded as:

Ingeborg Estens. Kvande
age 92 widow, d. 9 Nov 1917 bur. 13 Nov 1917

At least with a death date an obituary for Marie might be found which, depending on who provides and if the information is provided to local paper might tell more about her survivors.

There were 4 carpenters who em. via Kristiansund April 1906, all without a ticket.
Perhap Erik Lønning, as the other carpanters, worked for the ticket onboard the ship.

Did Erik have a middle name?

What were the names of the other 3 carpenters who left when Erik did?

Eisten Larson Brunsvig leaving in 1883 for America, Michigan:

08 March 1905 Eisten Larson Brunsvik departs to return to North Dakota

25 April 1905 Marie Lønning departs with the wife and children of her brother Eilert. They are listed with destination Washington. Perhaps Marie's destination is given as Washington only because she is traveling with them. She is traveling to her intended husband/fiancee Eisten, and he is going to be in North Dakota, thus her destination should be North Dakota.

04 April 1906 Erik Hansen Lønning departs, destination Philadelphia. But Philadelphia is only the port at which he will arrive. Many immigrants listed their arrival port as their "destination," even though they intended to journey beyond the port city.

1910 US Census Marie Lønning is in Nelson county, North Dakota

Therefore, if Marie never intended to go to Washington and instead traveled directly to North Dakota, and if Erik traveled to her, he would go to North Dakota. He could have stopped on the East Coast or along the route to work and earn money for the further travel.

Obviously this is just one among other possible scenarios.

I used the Canadian archives to search 1911 census in Canada and did not find Erik.

I grew up in Forde Township, Nelson County, North Dakota, USA. The farm where I grew up was less than a mile from the Brunsvik Farm where Marie Lonning came to live in 1905. The Brunsvik family donated some of their land so that so that a cemetery could be established there and also so that a church could be built there. The church was built in 1902 and named the Bergen Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Kirke. The church was dismantled in 1973 but the cemetery is still active. Your Great Grandmother Marie Lonning is buried there. Also there are Mother Ingeborg Brunsvik and her sons Halvor (Larsen) Brunsvik and Eisten (Larsen) Brunsvik. Marie's grave is in the Brunsvik family plot.

This cemetery is named The Bergen Cemetery. It can be found on the Find a Grave web site by searching for a cemetery in the state and county mentioned above. Many of the gravestone names are badly misspelled so you will have scroll down to find them.

Marie Lonning is not listed on Find a Grave as her gravestone was covered over with sod for many years. Several years ago i visited the cemetery and saw that a badger had dug a hole and the corner of a gravestone was visible in the hole so I cleared away the sod and exposed Marie's stone. I was back at the cemetery last week and the stone was again not visible so I did uncover it again and took a photo of it.

I aslo do have a photo of the Brunsvik brothers and Marie Lonning which I would gladly share with you if you would like to see it. It was taken in about 1910.

As soon as I get a chance I will stop at the ND State Archives and see if Erik Hansen Lonning filed naturalization papers in the State of North Dakota.

Interesting, too, is that he made the same trip to US in 1903.
