Hi,

I just recently discovered the Norwegian branch of my family tree. It's been an interesting journey. My mom's father was mentally ill which my grandmother didn't know until after they were married. When she approached his family for help, they pretty much told her that he was her problem now and the relationship went downhill from there. As a result, there was a huge gap in our family history. I've been able to piece some of it together and through a google search, I discovered that my 4th great grandfather was Bard Jonson Lassehaug, one of the early settlers in Chicago. He came from Voss in 1837. His daughter Signey married John Gittleson, a sailmaker and businessman in Chicago. According to "History of Norwegians in Illinois", John was a member of the Norwegian Old Settlers Society and arrived in 1850 but there's no information on where he came from. I'm not quite sure where to look next, I'm fairly certain that Gittleson is the americanized spelling (because on my great grandmother's birth certificate her name is spelled Gettleson) so I'm hoping maybe someone here might have a better idea of where I should look next?

Thanks,
Michelle Smith

There is a series of books written by Gerhard Naeseth titled Norwegian Immigrants to the United States 1825-1850 A Biographical Directory in which research has been gathered on Norwegians who came to US in those years. I have access and I will look to see if John Gittleson is in there and report (only not tonight)

The Norwegian naming system is patronymic mostly so it's likely that John's father's first name was Gittle or something like that. Kittil (so Kittilson) or Gisla (so Gislason) etc.

What do you know about John, birthdate, deathdate etc?

A marriage record or a death record (07 Jan 1897) or obituary might name a person's parents. Have you tried ordering a copy of his original death record?

Bio of Baard Jonson Rogne or Lassehaug b 1794.

Witnesses / sponsors at the baptisms of his children might be siblings or extended family members of John.

A transcription of the record eibache posted, Utflytta frå Voss 1837-1864 here

Emigration registration 22 April 1837, 18 April 1837
Baar Jonsen Lassehaug 42
Inger Andersdatter Lassehaug 44
Jon Aanesen 18
Bridta Baarsdatter 16
Anders Baarsen 14
Marta Baarsdatter 11
Anfind Baarsen 8
Sygni Baarsdatter 5
Inger Baarsdatter 3

Thanks for all the input, some of the info is new so I'm going to go through and fill in the gaps and keep plugging away at it. A lot of times I just get lucky and a different spelling will open things up.

Knowing about other Gittleson in Chicago might also help. This is from the pre 1916 Illinois death database at Illinois Secretary of State page:

GITTLESON, REGNA 1884-06-11 CHICAGO 84 YR U 00043311 COOK

She also appears in the ELCA death database funeral held from unknown Chicago Lutheran church as named Ragna Gittleson Kissmo (or Kirsmo or similar) having died 11 June 1884, age is listed as 83 years and buried on 13 June 1884.

She may or may not be related but keep in mind.

Google finds this mention of Ragna Gittleson in the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin Volume 25, (date may be 1879) Mortgages:

http://books.google.com/books?id=OIYqAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA295-IA2&lpg=PA295-IA2&dq=%22ragna+gittleson%22&source=bl&ots=Unh8OWWXzt&sig=LK44MrmoTIF6tlb0z7Bo-zOGre4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=hfBPU9_OEouRyAS1k4LYDw&ved=0CCoQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=%22ragna%20gittleson%22&f=false

And this from a publication called "Edwards Annual Directory ...of Chicago Volume 12 page 81-82:
www.ebooksread.com/.../page-82-edwards--annual-directory--of-chicag...#8206;
Gittelsen Ragna P. wid. Joergen. r. 35 W. Indiana Gittens Lawrence ... Gittleson John, foreman, Gilbert Hubbard & Co. r. 125 Hubbard

Jørgen Gittleson Gjerde #20-#23 is on a passenger list with wife Ragna and children (no John, however) here at norwayheritage:

I combed through the city directories for Chicago this morning and from 1861 on he's listed. So I have his home addresses which might help in finding him on the census. He worked for Gilbert Hubbard and Co for over 20 years so maybe that will lead somewhere as well.

It looks like I'll have to give up the idea I've been working on that John Gittleson came from Voss....

From Historie om Udvandringen fra Voss og Vossingerne i Amerika by K.A. Rene, published Madison, Wisconsin 1930 pg 114:

"...Sygni B. Johnson, født i 1832, blev gift i Chicago med John Gjetleson (Stavanger), velkjendt forretning paa S. Water street, Chicago, der døde den 7de januar 1897 og er begraven paa Graceland gravplads. Han var en af stifterne af Nora-foreningen i 1860."

Although this John Gitleson is found in the 1865 census, I still include him as a possible for John Gittleson in Chicago, #6 b April 1832:

Source information: Rogaland county, Nærem/Nærbø in Hå, Parish register (official) nr. A 4.1 /1 (1826-1841), Birth and baptism records men 1833, page 10.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=15803&idx_id=15803&uid=ny&idx_side=-9

No longer possible

Maybe sail making is a "family" occupation?

Here's a Gitle Gitleson b. abt 1825 Hetland with that occupation:
