My list of those with the first name Gitle refers to those Gitles who were married around the same time as John Gittleson was born.ie who could be a father to John. Your list is a list of Gitles born around the same time as John. Not the same type of list. Sorry if I did not make that clear in my posting.

There's room for two I think because there is a possible scenario that John might be the adaption to American life for someone with the first name Gitle. But I wasn't going out of my way to look for Gitles anyway, so no harm, no foul!

But here is a marriage from Helleland in Helleland, Rogaland 20 Aug 1821 between Gitle Tostenson Hastad & Kisti Nielsdatter Svalestad.

Here is a short biography published on the death of Howard Francis Bishop, grandson of John Gettleson:

http://mssa.library.yale.edu/obituary_record/1925_1952/1946-47.pdf

Here are 2 listings for obituary for "Gettleson" in January 1897 in the Chicago Tribune. The abstract of what's in the listing is free but to get the article you must pay. I suspect thess would be John Gettleson's.

http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/chicagotribune/advancedsearch.html

2. Obituary 2 -- No Title
Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1922); (Jan 9, 1897), p. 5.

4. Obituary 1 -- No Title
Chicago Daily Tribune (1872-1922); (Jan 9, 1897), p. 2.

Oh my goodness, please tell me how you are finding some of this stuff. . .I'd seen the entry for Gessine and wondered if she might be his second wife. I was hoping the Graceland info might confirm it--I wonder why his troubles made it all the way to DC papers--I guess there must not have been a lot of anything newsworthy at that point? I'd love to know the real story. . .the last directory I found him in was 1888 but that's also the last one I looked in before I got distracted by something else.

I knew Howard was a lawyer but I didn't know he'd gone to Yale, the sister mentioned in that article is my great grandmother. Their mother, John's daughter Carrie, died in 1894, just a few years before her father.

I haven't had a chance to go through the Norway database at Ancestry--that will be the next place I look as well. I'm just not quite sure how to narrow it down. . .the nice thing is that it's sort of like a knot, pick at it enough and eventually it unravels.

Empty white space in newspapers is anathema to editors so stories from all over are gathered to fill from wire services and other methods. Particularly of interest to publish "controversial" topics about people from far away places (which might sell paper) and who are not subscribers who might be ticked to see themselves portrayed in the paper (and cancel their subscription!). Valuable to researchers since not every issue of every paper gets preserved and then is made available directly and parts of the story might be preserved in other unrelated place's paper's preserved copy.

Since part of the legal exchange between Gesine and John indicated that he might leave the area I was curious if he actually left and then died some where else --since he doesn't appear in the Cook county death records databases. Sometimes city directories will also publish information as to a new location the person moved. It might also be of interest to find out what happened to No. 29 Lincoln Avenue house.

Suing for separate maintenance is a way for a couple to live separately without getting divorced. It's just like being divorced with property division etc negotiated and settled per law but at the end the only thing the couple can't do is marry another since they are still married to each other. Nice work if you can get it.

Getting John Gettleson's obit might help with finding a more exact origin in Norway or a full birthdate. There are numerous candidates so additional facts from US to help pare the numbers down or point to a correct person & would be helpful. Likewise the records from Graceland cemetery might also have something in those same lines of useful information.

I ran across these two records while rumaging through Ancestry. I guess I was under the impression that John Gittleson lived beyond 1881. But here are the records.

Cook County, Illinois, Marriage and Death Indexes, 1833-1889
Name: John Gettleson
Death Date: 22 Jul 1881

From the same page, just below John Gettleson is

Cook County, Illinois, Marriage and Death Indexes, 1833-1889
Name: Signa Gettleson

I think that refers to the death of Sygni, not John.

Well, I've been through all the baptisms in the Domkirken at Stavanger looking for a John Gitleson born between 1832-1837 but did not find any such person.

There is a couple having children at approximately the target time (1832-1836) named Gitle Gitleson and Brithe Marie Clausdatter, but I found no son of theirs named John (or equivalent to John). They had a daughter named Gitline b. 21 Dec 1835 and a son named Gitle b. 18 Aug 1837. I also searched for their marriage in Domkirken from 1832-1837 but likewise no result. The writing in these records is very cramped and crabbed so someone else might want to read through to see if I've missed any.

The info from Graceland arrived today. No birthdate for John but I'm hoping that with the exact death date I can request his death certificate and maybe that will shed some light--I will also see if I can use the microfilm at either National Archives or Library of Congress to look for his obit from the Chicago Tribune--fingers crossed. He died 1/7/1897 and his age is listed as 62. Looks like he bought the plot on 7/22/1881 at Graceland to bury Signey who died the day before (7/21/1881)--though her name is typed as "Sidney" but there are notes that the card was recopied twice so maybe the writing was just hard to read. Guess next time I'm headed for Chicago I can stop and say hello now that I know where to find them. .

It's the end of semester crunch for me so I'm going to have to let this sit for a couple weeks but I will keep you posted on what I find when I can get lost in it again. Thanks for all the suggestions--I really appreciate all your help and effort so far.

My search for John Gittleson in the parish registers of Norway has been largely unsuccessful. Below are the parish registers which I searched for him. Other researchers on forum are welcome to look to see if I've missed any. Trying to tackle it another way, I used Ancestry.com search mode. The data base "Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927" from Ancestry.com contains 21, 741, 178 records. Using the last name Gittles* there were only 13 records, none with a first name starting with J. Dropping one of the t's gave 1881 records. Limiting the search to birth 1834 +/- 2 gave only 39 records. Only one started with J.

Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 about Jon Gitlesen
Name: Jon Gitlesen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 28 apr 1832
Birth Place: Naereim,Rogaland,Norway
Father: Gitle Rasmusson
Mother: Inger Malena Olsdtr
FHL Film Number: 948.31H3 V26E

A very familiar name.
