Tønnes is a first name in Norway that you find in the south and southwest of Norway mostly. So Tønnesen the patronymic is most likely found in that same area of Norway. Rogaland is included in that area. I'm guessing that it occurs fairly rarely in Australia so perhaps this fellow Neil Tonsen who died in 1899 age 54 might be related. Especially since one of Hans' children was named Nils:

Just a thought.
The only Norwegian name to my knowledge containing Tonsen is Antonsen

Hedmark 0
Oppland 0
Buskerud 0
Vestfold 1
Telemark 1
Aust-Agder 1
Vest-Agder 7
Rogaland 77
Hordaland 0

Møre og Romsdal 0
Sør-Trøndelag 0
Nord-Trøndelag 0
Nordland 0
Troms 0
Finnmark 0
Totalt 87

Rogaland parish totals:

I think Kåre is right that it appears that we will have to look at other parishes perhaps near to Stavanger to find Hans.

Another tough nut....

Below, a possible?

1865
Living at Akre, Skudenes prestegjeld, Rogaland
Tønnes Tønnesen 48 Skudesnæs Prgj. Husfader g Gbr og Leilænding
Anne Kristine Hansdatter 49 Skudesnæs Prgj. hans Kone g
Hans Tønnesen 23 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Søn ug Fisker og Dagarbeider
Karen Marie Tønnesdatter 21 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Datter ug hjælper Forældrene med Gaardsbruget
Tønnes Tønnesen 16 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Søn ug hjælper Forældrene med Gaardsbruget
Inger Karine Tønnesdatter 13 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Datter ug
Christiane Tonnesdatter 10 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Datter ug
Anna Tønnesdatter 6 Skudesnæs Prgj. deres Datter ug
Jakob Tønnesen 3 Skudesnæs Prgj.

As mentioned first-born children to Hans = Josephine Hans Tonsen and Neils Hans Joseph Tonsen, so admittedly the family seemed pretty serious about Joseph/Josef or the like.

Stavanger seems pretty iffy as a birth place. As I've noticed by reading this forum (and elsewhere), often times immigrants named the big port city from which they departed as a point of origin. Perhaps he/she had lived there a little while before departure. The question "where are you from?" doesn't always trigger the actual birth parish, especially when that's a small place not known in the adopted community (in this case, in Australia).

Hans's age is calculated from his death record (only source, is that right?).

From Jan Peter, in a 2005 post: "Tannes, Tennes, Tonne, Tonnes, Tynnes, Tønne, Tønnen, Tønner, Tønnes, Tønni, Tønnis could all be different variations of the same name."

As Kåre points out Hans Tønnesen b 1843 can not be the Han Tonsen who immigrated to Australia.. Here he is in the 1900 US Census. But as JaneC points out "a tough nut to crack" indeed.

Working off of the find Jackie of a Niels Tonsen born abt 1845, there is this Nis Tønnesen, mother is not named Kristine or anything close and not a Hans in the list. . However the family does contain some sailors and the birth years are about right. From the 1865 Norwegian Cenus. Family is from Vest-Agder ie next to Rogaland fylke.

Another record for a Neils Tonsen. Based on the date, it is not likely to be the son of Hans.

Going back to the beginning to the one source which has his parents' names, their names are given as Joseph Tonsen and Christine. Joseph with any spelling is not that common a first name in Norway (the female version Josephine is much more usual) are there any other names which might be similar to Joseph?

In Rogaland in the 1865 there are a number of Joe and therefore Joesons and Joedatters. Rogaland parishes with Joe used this way are Jelsa, Vikedal, Hjemeland and a couple of others. Did not find any Joe Ton[ne]sen.

In Møre og Romsdal in 1865 census there is a more common male name Josva and therefore Josvason and Josvadatter. I assume that Josva might be the Norwegian equivalent of Joshua --but I don't know-- and to my American ear if pronounced quickly it does remind of Joseph. Did not find a Josva Ton[ne]sen.

Looking at the church registers only at the new page of the Digitalarkivet
for a father named Joe found no Ton[ne]sen but a very remote possible did turn up, Not in Rogaland but in a parish called Snåsa in Nord Trøndelag." Joe is given the last name of "Dunsjø", no patronymic as the father of a child (not named Hans, sorry) and the mother is called Kirsti.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/kb/kf/person/pk00000001043846

In the 1865 census in Snåsa there are 3 farm called "Dunsjøen" but I found no persons living there on the farm named Joe nor Joeson or Joesdatter nor in Snåsa.

However, this may the son Ole of Joe Dunsjø in the 1865 census, going by Johnson:
http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/WebCens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=11&filnamn=f61742&gardpostnr=504&personpostnr=3166&merk=3166#ovre

Ole Joeson Dunsjø's father is named Joe Olsen Dunsjø the baptism #37 left hand page:
Source information: Nord-Trøndelag county, Nordli in Snåsa, Parish register (official) nr. 755A01 /1 (1817-1864), Birth and baptism records 1833-1835, page 26-27.
Permanent pagelink: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=2505&idx_id=2505&uid=ny&idx_side=-15

Nordli is a small parish that's part of Snåsa and so I quickly read through and found no Hans whose father was Joe born 1850-1852. Joe is repeated in several records however along with Joen and Joh. So I wonder if its a local variant of John. Joe among English speakers is significant as it is the usual nickname of Joseph and I could see a possible scenario wherein a person's father's name is spoken as Joe / Joh and an English speaker dresses it up to Joseph.

And one other remote possibility. There is a farm called Tonsen in Aker and there is a 14 year old Hans Joakin Sogn b. Aker. His parents are not Joseph nor Christine:

http://gda.arkivverket.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=5&filnamn=f60218b&gardpostnr=250&merk=250#ovre

Transcription of Hans' baptism:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/N71P-T99

Hans Sogn is also not possible as he married twice in Oslo in the 1870s and 1880s, so very unlikely to be in Australia.

Tonsen farm eventually becomes a hospital and pleiehjem:

Tonsen farm, an interesting past.

In the middle-age Tonsen was owned by Hovedøya Monastery, 1806-54 owned by the Bailiff, 1887 Tonsen was a farm for poor paupers in Aker parish. Aker Hospital & nursing home opened here July 1. 1896.
This house was build ca 1760 and is protected by the Law.

This morning I looked at mocavo.com and found this about Hans Tonsen in Australia:

Hans Jurgen TONSEN
New South Wales, Australia, Naturalization Index, 1834–1903
Last Name:Tonsen
First Name:Hans Jurgen
Date of Certificate: 31 Oct 1900

So apparently he did become a citizen and hopefully, there might be some other interesting paperwork involved with this procedure.

Not to create confusions.
I wonder if Tonsen is a dead end, if it was a name he chose for reasons we do not know.

We have Hans Jørgen with parents Joseph and Christina (Kristine-Kirstine)
