| My grandmother (daughter of John Mark Anderson, granddaughter of Anders Zacharias Benjaminson) said her father and uncle left Donna Island in 1893 after a big storm that took many fisherman's lives. Her father, uncle and grandfather were caught in the storm but survived. |

| If you were to go through the death / funeral registers of the parishes in the Lofoten Islands and most of Nordland, you will find that there were many deaths on the sea. Waters in the area are often violent. It was a risk most were willing to take, to make a living for themselves and their families but very harsh consequences. |

The storm was Jan. 25. 1893, 6 fishermen from Dønna were never found and buried #1-6
Shipwrecked on a journey to Stamsund in Lofoten.

| I haven't been able to find John Mark Anderson's boat record yet. He came with his brother Albert skei in May 1893. I'm not sure when he changed his name to John Mark from Jens Mork. |

Add. information.
Your Family on Skei (spelled Skjei in 1865) and my family on Skræingen (Nordbø) were cottagers/leaseholders on Dønna.
The farms were owned by Dønnes Manor and the Coldevin family.
1880 the manor owned 550 farms, ca 140 of them were on Dønna.
The cottagers were required to work a specfied number of days on the estate. On the Estate it was a clock tower where they rang the bell when they needed help.
Grandpa told me they hated the sound of the damned bell.
A warm summerday early in the 1900 grandpa told me that he, his brothers and father worked hard to get the dry hay into their own barn, the bell ranged.
After a while the landlord come riding on a white horse and asked if they had not heard the bell.
"Yes" they answered, "we heard the bell, but if you help us we will help you"
Coldevin turned the horse and rode home.
They never heard anything about this event later
1911 Isach Coldevin went bankrupt and em. to USA.

I 1900 all four Skei farms were owned by the users, occupation "Gårdbruger" Farmer, but the land was still leased (owned by Dønnes Manor)
This practice was mostly ended between 1900-1930, and by the law 1928 where former cottagers could by their "own" land.
The Real Estate Register, not online for Nordland county yet, will tell when that happened and how much they paid for the land.

I hadn't explored this base before when it was first posted but I see that it contains the information t hat Anders' daughter Anne came to US with her husband and children in 1904, so none of that generation (your grandmother's known sibling and half-siblings) stayed in Norway (except those who had passed on). |
