Here on Find a Grave website is a likely candidate to be Alfred Swensen's daughter Ruth, listed in 1940 census as married to Arthur Eriksen. The two are nine years apart in age (in 1940 she's 20, he's 29). More research needed.

Hjalmar Swensen's daughter Dorothy Swensen Barlow born 1929 died in 1994. Obit on Find a Grave.

Two public family trees on Ancestry.com website (called the Kilcer Family Tree and the Barlow Tree)
include photos of Hjalmar, his wife, and "the Swensen girls" on Court Street in Brooklyn.
Dorothy's obit names her sister Marion (Swensen) Larsen of Corfu, (Genesee county), New York. Below is a 2010 obit from Corfu, New York for Kenneth A Larsen who had parents Marion Swensen and Andrew Larsen. Likely to be Hjalmar's grandson.

Hjalmar's daughter Esther M Swensen Swartz (1919-1997) is also memorialized on Find a Grave. Her obit is posted. Names her parents as Carl H. and Klara Keese Swensen. Her husband Charles Swartz pre-deceased her in 1959. Surviving children are mentioned and as of 1997 included a son living in....wait for it....Australia.

I added a 1930 census for Alfred on previous page. The following records confirm the posted US census records are the correct Alfred (Johan Alfred Fritjof).
A reminder, Johan Alfred Fritjof Svendsen was born 10 Dec 1892. 1910 census said he was born in Moss: Link

Wow..... I am getting inundated with the amount of cousins that are beginning to turn up. I can see I am going to have to formalise this a bit as I keep going from one post to the other and confusing myself. So it seems to me that the USA branch of the family settled in or around New York. Interestingly I served in Afghanistan with an American Swensen from New York. We both laughed a bit as we are the same height and build with the same spiky hair and we both have very scandinavian features. Other Soldiers, both American and Australians joked that we were long lost brothers.....
As to the comments about Hjalmar's build... it fits as pretty well as all of the Aussie Swensen men were around 5'5" to 5'7" with muscular stocky builds. I was previously the tall one at 5'10". My son, is the first Swensen male to top 6' in height..... |

That was where Svendt was living with Tomine when the Census was done in 1900. I can't find it.... but possibly because I do not know how modern Norwegians set out their addresses.

Liljegata exists, its a small narrow street, # 488 does not exist as a street number today link.
See the houses and pan/rotate with the circle in the upper left hand corner

Try this for Sven August Swensen's father - at least, it seems to be the man Jackie found coming into Moss in 1888 on this Link

No father listed. The original handwritten record is viewable on Ancestry.com. A word I can't read might be an abbreviation for "utanför äktenskapet" (out of wedlock). The mother is noted as "pige" - unmarried woman.

Swedish Husförhörslängd (Household Examination Rolls) for Augerum (1861-1868), image 47 on the Ancestry.com system, shows unmarried Gertrud Svensdtr born 1833 in Th--?--, arrived in the parish in 1853, has a daughter Emma Christina born 02 Oct 1858 in Augerum and son Sven August born 24 January 1865.
Found Emma Christina's birth record, and again no father is named. Augerum church book (1848-1861), image 123 on the Ancestry system. Mother age 25 1/4 at that time.
I think the records in all three cases (Sven birth, Emma birth, household exam record) have this family in Rörsmåla, Augerum, Blekinge, but I find the R word very hard to read. |

Again referring to the innflyttar record for a Sven August Larsen, born 24 Jan 1865 in Augerum, Sweden, coming into Moss Oct 1888: the record notes an attest of vaccination (presumably against smallpox) dated... 6/1 1888.
In Sven August Larsen marriage record 09 Nov 1888,
attest of vaccination is dated... 6/1 1888.
An indication it is the same Sven.
Also married 09 Nov 1888 same church is Hansine Lovise Eriksen b 1865 in Fr.hald with father Karl Eriksen.
Tomine Mariane Eriksen had a sister Hansine age 1 in the 1865 census.
Hansine married Marinius Jensen? S undt? of Denmark.
Seems same name (Marinius Jensen? Sundt?) as a witness for Sven and Tomine wedding, along with the bride's father (Karl Eriksen).
A double wedding for sisters?

Truth is stranger than fiction. Genealogical literature is filled with siblings raised / adopted separately in divergent geographical areas who find each other and marry. Perhaps there's something genetic going on with that. |

Hello,
I am Alfred's great-granddaughter. Grace is my grandmother. Alfred mentioned having a brother in Australia, but we never had the details. If Sven is his brother, this would be a great help in figuring out the family tree!

Yes, Sven (Svend August Swensen b 1894) is Alfred's brother. :D
You can contact Svend August's descendant in Australia by clicking on his username and sending an email.
The name "Frederikshald" later became "Halden." You see both in this thread. Read more here
Here's a little organization, listing Tomine Eriksen's children (I've omitted the Johan Alfred born 1890 who had to have died young). Omits lots of information available in the thread and probably still much more known to you. A caution - do proofread this.

| I sent an email to Judi and hope she replies. I would like to tell her about "Gus", he had a very "interesting Life", being everything from a a sailor, to being a skipper of sail trading vessels, to being an investigator for the Australian Customs service,. He was also a lighthouse keeper at many remote lighthouses around the rugged South Australian coastline. Additionally he also served as a soldier in the Australian Army during both WW1 and WW2. His Son Ben served in WW2 in north Africa and New Guinea, and his Grandson, (me), served as an Infanry Soldier in East timor and Afghanistan, (where I met the other Swensen). The Australian Swensens have a bit of a tradition of service in the military. |
