Ok, so it seems Johannes and Ole are not brothers. I'm heading out but a couple quick comments. Per the family tree with link provided, Mary Pedersdatter first married Lewis Adams (Lars Adamsen, I think). Next married Johannes (in 1867 as Jackie found). The posted census seem to reflect that possibly Johannes was John Peterson in 1860 and later John Selsing. The census over the course of time suggests possibly John Peterson Selsing and Christian Peterson could maybe be brothers. The 1910 census is striking with John, retired and widowed, next to (seemingly) Christian's son Amos and John's son John N Selsing next to (seemingly) Christian's widow and son Ola. I looked and didn't find Christian born in Hafslo to same parents - so either they are not brothers or simply more research was needed re all of it. If John Peterson in 1860 is the same as John Peterson Selsing, he was first married to Sophia. Later census says immigrated 1856 and if accurate (or close) he's somewhere in the US before 1860 census.
Not much help...thinking out loud. |

The mom Family Tree also has this brief information on the life of Jon Selsing
"Jon Selsing was born Johannes Pedersen. His father's name was Peder Nilsen and mother Marte Larsdatter. He was born on the Vollaker farm in Hafslo but he and his parents move to Sogndal and lived on the farm Selseng prior to his leaving in 1863 to come to America. He came to Wisconsin the Mt. Morris area. The information about his marriage and children are from the Luthern Church in Mt. Morris. There are other Selsing's records in this church but I believe they are not related" |

An add on to the list of Census that identify with John Selsing. It should be noted if JaneC has not already done so in one of her posts, that the moms Famly Trees and the various other Family Trees that identify with Ole and Ragnilde as parents use this Census for the same man but with diffeent parents.

This may be the Peder Nielsen Valaker referenced in the mom Family Tree and listed in the Selected U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880. Problems with this person being the same person as Peder Nielsen Sarthe shown by Jane C leaving Hafslo is the birth year of 1826 and wife is named Anna and the children are born in the 1850's. However Anna was born in Norway and the next oldest two children are born in Wisconsin.

Probably the family in the 1870 Census under the name Nelson. I doubt if this person is the same as the Peder Nielsen of Sogndal.

Got it - a smoking gun. Buried at Holden Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mount Morris, where John P Selsing is buried, is a Lewis P Selsing. His full birth date is inscribed on his tombstone: 25 January 1846. And in the Sogndal churchbook is a Lars born 25 January 1846 to Peder Nielsen and Marte Larsdatter, Dvergedal (?). Her farm name seems the same as that in the birth record for Johannes.

Confirmation record for Lars Pedersen Selseng, same birth date, 25 January 1846:1861
So seemingly a son of this couple did immigrate and live in Mount Morris township. His US census records say he was born in Norway and immigrated ca 1863 (as a summary). Makes it highly likely Johannes's parents were correctly named by mom2.

So far it seems Johannes Pedersen (Selsing) was born at Dvergedal farm and baptized in Hafslo parish, Sogn og Fjordane, 06 March 1838:

On link below, this is probably the father to Johannes Pedersen Selsing and Lars Pedersen Selsing, died in Norway:
Peder Nielsen Selseng died 13 Sep 1860 in Sogndal,
died age 45 (born about 1815).

I didn't spend much time with the Ancestry trees earlier. Now I see some have Lewis/Lars listed as a child of Ole and Ragnhild Selsing. To recap, Ole and Ragnhild registered with their parish in April 1844 that they were moving out with the intention of going to America. The children going with them do not include Lars, and besides, he wasn't born yet. The 1850 US census for Ole and Ragnhild includes no child Lars or Lewis or similar. Lars/Lewis census records indicate him being born in Norway after Ole and Ragnhild left Norway and immigrating long after them. Lars's tombstone is inscribed with his 1846 date of birth.
The case is more clear for Lars (that he's not a child of Ole-Ragnhild) than for his brother Johannes, because of the timing of Lars's birth.

Nice work Jane, and yes I agree that the man in Silver Lake, Iowa is a diffent person than the father of Johannes Pedersen Selsing. The mom Family Tree is probaly mostly correct with the small error of probably trying to connect the Silver Lake, Iowa man to Johannes. |

Bingo - on the Lars leaving record.
The mom2 creator might have a reason unknown to us (like a family story) for connecting Peder Nielsen with Valaker and if so the man in Iowa was tempting. We didn't see a sign of that residence for him so far.
Back in an edit ---
Leaving registration and/or emigration record for Johannes hasn't been found. Lars was so young when he departed. One hypothesis could be that not only his father but also his mother have died and he is traveling to Johannes in America.
I wonder if the X marks Jackie asked about are people believed to have left the parish but not registered as such.
Johannes's death record or obit - or Lars/Lewis obit might hold the confirmation the two were brothers, but the circumstantial evidence is strong that they were.
The land map mentioned was 1914 and Ancestry search found no others. |
