I was not taken by any of the people found in the approach above and considering the Auntie thinking that maybe he was much older than the 1869 to 1872 dates we have been working with tried.
Larsen born in either Horten, Drammen or Kristiania between 1858 to 1860 in the 1865 Census.

For Horten no candidates
For Drammen

Lauritz Larsen foster child born 1858
Census year: 1865
Municipality: Drammen
Municipality number: 0602
Street name:
Street number: 118d
City district: Strømsø

Lauritz Martinius Larsen stepson born 1860
Census year: 1865
Municipality: Drammen
Municipality number: 0602
Street name:
Street number: 286
City district: Bragernes

Martin Larsen born 1858
Census year: 1865
Municipality: Drammen

I found a man named Laurence Lawson (18) in Census-1881 for Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire, England.
I don't think he has been mentioned here before?

He is a fisherman, born 1863 in Norway, and lives in a household with another norwegian named Mathias Oxe. A great page of SHIPS IN PORT IN LINCOLNSHIRE 1881 GRIMSBY says the two Norwegians are serving on the vessel "Ld.Brougham", and are born in Aalesund.
Aalesund in Møre & Romsdal county is quite far from Oslo though.

Looking at the names of the children, I believe Louis Lawson's mother could be named "May"; or rather a Norwegian variant of "May".

Their children from census-1911:
John Louis Lawson 12
Florence May Lawson 11
George Albert Lawson 10
Thomas Edwin Lawson 8
William Arthur Lawson 4
Violet Isabel Lawson 3
Jessie Francis Lawson 1

John Louis b. 1899 seems to be named after the couple's fathers; Florence' father was John Winney, Louis' father was named Louis Lawson, or rather Laurits or Lars in Norwegian.
Florence May b. 1900 should thus be named after their mothers then...? I assume Florence Ellen Winney's mother was named Florence? Then May should come from Louis' mother...

Edit: Well... so much for that theory; The Charles Family Tree on ancestry.com name the mother of Florence Ellen Winney as "Mary Ann Wenney".

Your find of Laurence Lawson born abt 1863 in the 1881 Census for Great Grimsby led me to check for any Lars Larsen born 1863 plus/minus 2 in More og Romsdal.

Here is the most interesting one of the group. His name contains the makings of Louis Martin Lawson and his father has essentially the same name as he does. Some of the things that pop up in this thread.

Name: Lars Marius Larsen
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 10 sep 1862
Baptism Date: 16 nov 1862
Baptism Place: Aalesund,More Og Romsdal,Norway
Father: Lars Larsen
Mother: Anne Sophie Ingebrigtsdr

His baptism

http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=16025&idx_id=16025&uid=ny&idx_side=-38

Here is the family in 1865 Census.

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/en-gb/ft/person/pf01038276003115

And in 1875 Census

http://digitalarkivet.arkivverket.no/ft/person/pf01052324003077

I could not find him in the 1900 Norwegian Census]

His confirmation, see number 60, in 1877

Interesting. I also noticed this one, but didn't follow him further. We might find many "Lars or Laurits Larsen" in Norway that could fit into this Louis Lawson in Grimsby, so to be able to finally determine the correct one, I think we still need some more evidence from the UK.
I would really like to know what the source for d.o.b. = 17 APR 1872 comes from. Anton, did you by an chance get a reply from the owner of the Greenfield/Anderson Family Tree?

And from the name of their children, is it possible to guesstimate the name of Louis' mother?
Does the original marriage certificate of 07 NOV 1897 contain any unknown information?

On the vessel "Hope" there is one Alfred Lawson (26) from Ollesund, Norway. Sounds like Aalesund. An older brother?

And as seen earlier; on the vessel: "Burton" (1881):
R. G. REEVES M 36 M Edenbridge, Kent, Eng Master
L. WESTER U 22 M Albrough, Norfolk, Eng Mate
G. EATWELL U 19 M London, Middlesex, Eng Fisherman
L. LAWSON U 22 M Harten, Norway Fisherman
L. EASTER 15 M Bath, Somerset, Eng Cook

Harten (Horten) is listed as L. Lawson's birthplace. L. Lawson (18) is of course not the same person as Laurence Lawson (18) on the vessel "Ld.Brougham", which was born in Aalesund.

I agree and I think that Dave is hoping that his Auntie in Australia will send him something that provides some hard evidence, maybe a birth date, maybe a place in Norway, maybe a Norwegian name.

I do not know, but there are several records in which his birth year is given as 1869, so I have alsways doubted that birth date.

But that is not unusual with Ancestry

It's not the birthyear that is the most interesting in "17 APR 1872", but the date itself. If that date is correct; finding a Laurits Martin Larsen born 17 Apr (1863-1872) in Horten could be the proof we are looking for

"Horten, Vestfold" is covered by the churchbooks from Borre, Åsgårdstrand and Nykirke.

Using "All Norway, Select Baptisms, 1634-1927 Results" There are only 412 baptisms for Vestfold in this data base, and only 212 males.

These are the males listed for Borre, Horten, and Nykirke. No listing for the other name.

I did not find many males in my long list very interesting, certainly not many Larsen names. Here is a list of Larsen type names from that same data base but without worrying about what the parish is. All from Vestfold of course.

A much shorter list and to my mind more manageable.

For Oslo (Kristiania) the program wants to use any combination of 17 and Apr for birth and baptism making it hard to use. But does give up this person.
