Thanks a lot Jackie! I think I just found the birth of that Gertrude as well. What is a bit funny, is that Gertrude might have grown up in my neighbour municipality in Norway. Garen is one of a few norwegian surnames I guess could be translated into Gordon, but no evidence. Here is what I found: Kildeinformasjon: Hordaland fylke, Ulvik, Ministerialbok nr. A 16 (1870-1878), Fødte og døpte 1872, side 30.

I will try to look deeper into the mismatch of dates.

Geir, is there a bygdebok which covers the Garen area which you might access?

Gertrude's obituary in Texas newspaper only listed her surviving children, no siblings were mentioned, nor the name of her parents.

Since Gertrude Garen's mother came as married rather than widowed, perhaps Gertrude's father came earlier or later?

Madli is not a common first name over here. My only other experience with the name being adapted was it became a Mollie. Familysarch seems to favor it's adaptation to Lena and there are of course, numerous.

"Ulvik gards- og ættesoga" by Kolltveit, 2 vols.
and the older "The ættarboks (Norwegian genealogies) for Øyfjord, Ulvik, Kinsarvik, Odda, Udlesvang" by Bu, 5 vols - available on LDS microfilms

But Garen is actually in the Eidfjord book, rather than Ulvik. "Gard-og ættesoge for Eidfjord" - interesting link from the FamilySearch catalog entry.
