Hello all,
I have been very successful finding ancestors, now it is time to find living members of my family tree.
I'm looking for any decedents of John Olson Aasen born 1815 at Moen/Sem Nordre, Heddal, Norway and died in 1868 on Aasen, Heddal, Norway.
He married Thore Olsdtr Soubøe born 1819 on Saubø/Tuddal, Hjartal, Norway she passed on 1861 presumably also on Aasen farm.
They had five children: Gonne (1842), Ole (1844), John (1847 - my ancestor), Thore (1851).
John Johnson Aasen married Ragnild Torstensen Aasen they had 11 children, 9 of them were born in Norway.
All there children came with them and settled in Waupaca County, Wisconsin.
If anyone knows what has happened to the John's brother and sisters or if they are decedents please let me know!
I have a cousin planning a trip to Heddal region/parish and would love to meet some cousins if they are still living in the area.

Hi Heidi, yes it is fun that you were successful finding ancestors - with a little help from your friends. 
You ask about descendants of the children of John Olsen Aasen 1815 - what became of the siblings of your ancestor John Johnsen Aasen b 1847. A headstart on an answer was made here: link

That leaves Ole unaccounted for in Norway.
A contributor in your other thread posted that Ole married Helga Torkildsdatter Sem.

I believe this is John*s brother Reier Olsen born Oct. 10. 1820 who married Anne Johannesdatter Mørk Dec. 27. 1849 in Hitterdal.
Bachelor and Corporal Reier Olsen Aasen 29.
His father Reier Olsen was dead #17

Ok, I'm a little embarrassed. Should of read more of my post from 6 years ago apparently!
So reading over the Ole Johnson line he married Helge Torkildsdtr Sem, but that is where it stops in 1841 on the farm in HITTERDALSBOKEN.
He had a son John Olsen born 1873, but where? What farm/region? Were there more children? Is there more current Norwegian census records I can follow?
Also, who can tell me about Sauer? Where is that exactly?
Kåre it is good to see your still helping us all out with our research!!! You are going way farther back than I was-- back to Ole Reierson son Reier b-1820. All good to know and check tree, I might have this all noted.

Look for Helge's father on Sem in the Hitterdalsboken. That gives an exact date for her marriage to the man from Aasen but not much more. Helge was the oldest of 14 children!
Hitterdalsboken also contains Sauer lille, Sauer midtre, Sauer nordre and Sauer søndre farms... also a Sauerlien.
1875 Norwegian census has not been completely turned into databases available online, some areas are not yet included. But you could give a try at

John was born Nov 8 1873, see #78.
The parents were then on Lysthus. See this map.

Helge Torkildsdatter was born Nov 13 1841, see #72.
Her parents were Torkild Olsen and Kari Olsdatter, Bratte Plads under Grene mellom.

Hi Heidi, good to hear from you. It's been quiet in this forum in July, vacation-time, so I have been following Draken Harald Hårfagre in The Great Lakes link
Guess you already know this.
Fanejunker (highest ranked Non-commissioned officer in Norway) Torkild Olsen Sem/Lysthus and Kari Olsdatter had 14 children.
Helge (firstborn child) born on farm Brattekaas Nov. 13. 1841 m. Oct. 17. 1873 Ole Johnsen Aasen. b. on N.Sem Oct. 26. 1844. His parents were leaseholders, later owners of Aasen under Spærud

There's some work to be done to verify this is your Ole in Waupaca. Probably is.

The research in a bygdebok can be in error - but usually not. Of course you can continue with the original research to verify 100%.
You may find it worthwhile, Heidi, to read the whole rootsweb thread.

As a synthesis and summary of the above, no descendants of John Olsen Aasen born 1815 are known to have remained in Norway.

Thank you all for confirming this! A cousin of mine from the Aasen line will be travelling to Norway in a couple weeks and she wanted to see if she could meet some relatives.
I will continue with more research, on the connections here in the US. You have given a lot to go by. Thank you. |
