William Benson born about 1822 Norway, died 30 July 1900 Karitane New Zealand, aged 79 years.
William Benson’s death certificate records his parents as Abraham Benson and Sarah Benson and his father Abraham Benson’s profession as “sailor”.
William Benson’s death certificate states he died 30 July 1900. William Benson was buried Karitane Cemetery New Zealand - 2 August 1900. The age recorded on his death certificate and his cemetery record - 79 years. Therefore William Benson was born about 1822.
William Benson’s death certificate states that he was born in Norway, 40 years in New Zealand (therefore immigrated to New Zealand 1860).
It is stated on William Benson’s cemetery record and death certificate that he was a “sailor” of Karitane.
William Benson is my great grandfather.

Probably his death record from New Zealand. Although date is not an exact match to your date. I see that a separate record lists his burial date as 2 Aug 1900.

Departed Gravsend England June 19.1841, arrived Port Nicholson Oct. 30. 1841.
Question; Which ship and from which port brought him from Norway to England June 1941

Thank you Kaarto and Lyndal. Of the 3 Abraham records are any located in a area known for whaling - Eker, Nes, Asker? My Mum is of the impression they were whalers.

The whalers mostly came from coastal areas, but no rules without exceptions, so its diff to answer your question on where he came from in Norway, sorry.
Let's hope someone out there who has the answer find these pages.

I have looked through parish records for Eiker, Nes and Asker, but found no William baptized there 1821-1823.

I think that Einar has hit upon something that certainly needs to be investigated a lot further. When I have run William Benson born abt 1824 through the Ancesry.com data base the person who comes up most often is the one surfaced by Einalr. This person is also always linked to the William Benson who is listed as a seaman on several ships including this one to Australia.

Thank you so much Jkmarler for searching the 1801 census. The only official record we have that William Benson was born in Norway is his death certificate.
William's son Archibald Cooper b1878 was my mum's grandfather. When Archibald died in 1957, my Mum aged 11 years, remembers her mum and Benson sisters discussing at length the Norwegian heritage as they were unaware of it until their father Archibald's death (it had never been spoken about). There was a box in Archibald's room that contained information about the Norwegian heritage (unfortunately we have no idea where the contents of the box ended up).
Archibald's death certificate states he was born in Waikouaiti New Zealand so it was not their father that they were speaking about. |
