Hello
I have resubmitted this as a new discussion

Hello All!
I do not know if it would be better to start a new discussion since this thread is from 2013 or not. First I would like to thank all those who were so helpful then, and I hope all is well with everyone in this valuable forum. I am revisiting my Larson tree in Norway. This time I am hoping to fill in the tree with my family that chose to remain in the Voss area. Anders and Nils remained and I was hoping to fill in wives and children and up to present day if possible
I hope to travel to Norway in the next 5 years and would love to meet some cousins! If this is not realistic in the forum I understand, but any information would be fantastic. Again, thank you for the amazing help you all gave me 4 years ago!

thank you for the quick reply JaneC

I am just now able to sit down and look at all these links.

It is amazing that these relatives chose the Puget Sound area to relocate, but did not stay in contact with the Larson families in Bellingham. (maybe they did?)

Also interesting they used "Graue" as last name. It is a last name I have never seen in America.

I was able to find Erik who came to WA State in 1903-

He married Anna Rongve and their first child was born in Bellingham [https://www.digitalarchives.wa.gov/Record/View/072F13495C1AA02D9A98B8A056349971] eventually named Mary Bertine Anderson
thank you JaneC for the start on Graue's in America.
Did any of Lars Larsson of Graue's children remain in Norway for any length of time? Is Graue a common last name in the Voss area?
Thank you all for your help- JaneC all your links were fantastic

If you enter Graue in the NHDC site "SEARCHING THE 1865, 1875, 1900 AND 1910 CENSUSES FOR NORWAY" you will find 70 or so people with the last name Graue, most of them living in Voss.

1910

Also using Graue for both surname and farm name gives 41 people living on the Graue farm using the surname Graue.

Thank you Lindal40 for the reply concerning the last name Graue in the Voss area of Norway. Does census information stop after 1910 in Norway? I'm wondering the best way to try to find out if any of Lars Larson's children remained in Norway and never immigrated to the United States. I still don't fully understand how last names worked in that area of Norway in the early 1900s
Thank you all so much for the help that you've given me over these last few years

No census taken after 1910 can only be used at present for statistical purposes. The next census to become available for general use will be the 1920 census in 2020.

Thank you so much!
I knew just a tiny bit of what you have listed here but so much of the more modern stuff I never even knew about.
I am hoping to visit this area of Norway when I retire in the next five years and it will be wonderful to have names and places to try to contact thank you so much!

Petra lived a very long time. She probably lived long enough to see great grandchildren!

Remembering Ivar Graue/Grae, a tailor from Norway to Camas, WA. The name this family used in the US was Grae.

Ivar Grae was an early tailor in Camas, WA. In 1947,my Dad, William John McMillan, III purchased the tailor shop from Ivar Grae, which is when we moved from Oregon City, OR to Camas, WA.

Some years back, I communicated with a lady who published a manuscript for the 100 year Anniversary in 2009, of Vosselag. Ivar Graue/Grae was one of the original 107 members of Vosselelag, a cultural organization organized in 1909 at Albert Lea, MN for those with heritage or interest in Voss, Norway. Ivar married Anna June 2, 1902 at the Voss Church. You can google for a website about Vosselag.

Ivar and Anna had no children, but they apparently did adopt, and help raise a girl who may have been orphaned. I don’t believe this girl had children either. For that reason, I wanted to honor the memory of Ivar and Anna with what I was able to find out about them, so they’re not totally forgotten.

Ivar L Gra/Grae shows as 32 years old, and his wife Anna Gra/Grae was 26 years old, both from Norway, when they immigrated to the US on the SS Saxonia in 1904. The record shows Ivar was a tailor, and their destination was to join Ivar’s cousin, Trond A Gra/Grae at Biwabik, MN.

There is one family tree showing his name as Ivar Larson Graue, born 11 Sept 1871 at Graue, Vangen, Voss, Hordaland, Norway, and Ivar died 3 Feb 1967 at Portland, OR. Ivar’s spouse was Anna Olsdatter Ofstedal, born 11 Jun 1878 at Evanger, Voss, Hordaland, Norway, and Anna died 10 Mar 1943 at Vancouver, WA. Ivar and Anna are buried at the Camas Cemetery in Camas, WA.

Ivar’s father, Lars Trondson Graue was a wheelwright.

Ivar and Anna show as “Gray” and Ivar a tailor, on the June 7, 1905 Minnesota census, and they were at Mankato, MN at that time.

On a 1905 Salem, OR directory, Ivar L Grae shows as a tailor for the Salem Woolen Mills Store. He and his cousin, Trond Grae are at the same address in Salem, OR in 1905. On 1908 and 1910 directories and 1910 census, Ivar Grae is back at Mankato, MN as a tailor for John Nelson who had a business as a merchant tailor in Mankato, MN.

It would seem it was the same Ivar Grae who was between Makato, MN and Salem, OR, so it appears there could have been a lot of travel between those places?

In 1911, Ivar Grae is at Salem, OR as a tailor for the Salem Woolen Mills Store again, and his cousin Trond Grae shows as a laborer in Salem. On the 1914 Camas, WA directory, Ivar is a tailor in Camas, WA. On the 1920 census, Ivar Grae is a lodger in Camas and shows as a tailor. (Anna is absent in 1920, as she returned to Norway for a visit where her mother was ill.) On the 1930 census Ivar is a tailor in Camas. Anna is with him, and who shows as a daughter, 19 years old Mildred C Grae, working as a stenographer for a bank. Mildred may have been adopted by Ivar and Anna. This census shows Mildred was born in Oregon. The 1940 census shows Ivar and Anna are living in Camas and Ivar is a tailor.

In 1931 Ivar and Anna Grae, and Mildred (now last name Matson on the ship manifest, which may have been her birth name) traveled by ship to England.

Regarding Mildred Matson, it appears she and a sibling Frances B Matson born 1913 were with a Berg family on the 1920 census where they show as born in Oregon and their parents born in Norway, so it appears the girls may have been orphaned. They lived at what shows as Gibbons in Clark County, WA so likely what is now Washougal. By 1930, Frances B Matson was living with the Berg family as a servant in Portland, OR.

The 1940 census shows Mildred as Mildred C Grae, single and working as a stenographer for accountants in Seattle, WA. The census shows she had lived at Camas, WA in 1935.

Mildred was first married to Wesley McPherson at the Lutheran Church in Camas. Witnesses to the marriage were William Karnath (I suspect the Dentist) and Caroline Gallaway (the wife of George, who was or became the mill manager for the Crown Zellerbach paper mill for a time in Camas, and on a 1965 directory shows as the President of Crown Zellerbach in California).

Ivar’s cousin, Trond Grae (I don't believe he married), had lived in the Tacoma and Seattle area until his death in 1966. On draft registration records he recorded his cousin Ivar Grae for contact. Trond is buried in the Camas Cemetery also.
