On the ellis island page for Ole Mathias Olsen it also says he had been in America in 1906 and that Ole is going to a "friend" Olaf Bakken. Are they actually related in some fashion?
I see on Olaf Bakken's WWI draft registration that his address in 1917 was 557 Henry street, that he is married with one 3 month old child and also supports his father (who isn't named). |

Hi.
Yes They are Family. The wife of Ole Mathias, named Sissel, is the aunt of Olaf Bakken's wife.
I did not know OM had been to EI in 1906. I've heard he had been to sea, but not when. Thank you for that info.
Olaf Bakken had 5 children, but I have not their birth year just now.

Here is a candidate. The birth year is off, but he is living as a lodger, no wife or family around but he is listed as married, and he is listed as a carpenter and arrival of 1823.

Yes and Olaf is a different but similar name. At the New York Arrivals 1892-1924 there are about 15 Olaf Olsen arrivals in 1923. |

That was interresting info. The question we ask in Our Family is Did he just left his Family? If so he could had named himself Olaf. It is Close. Was he f ex killed?

Arrival of Olaf Bakken, going to friend Martin Langmyr in Brooklyn. Although he says his permanent address is Brooklyn so he must have been here earlier. He refers to his father as Christian Bakken Landivig Grimstad?

In 1910 Ole is not living with the family, although he is enumerated there. Here he is again, with a different birth date but seems to be the same: 1910
Full birth date and parents' names will help to identify Ole in US records. Is this the correct birth date? 17 October 1878: Birth record |

Is there any farm name associated with Ole Mathias Olson or his family?
Here is an Ole Helland, a carpenter, married with no wife present, migrated in 1923 living in New York in 1930;

Oles birthday is Okt 17 1878.
In 1910 I find him working on a Pulp Mill (?) a coupple of mils from his home. I*ve been told his as a sailor at a time. I dont know when. My grandmoter told me so. ( His wife)

This is likely the same person. Does not look very promising based on birth date and the name of the wife.

It sounds as if you and your family had contact with Olav and Gunhild Bakken after your grandfather went to America. Is that right? They visited in Norway? Since he was traveling to them in 1923, it seems they would have known what became of Ole, but apparently that is not the case?
Who was the last person to know Ole's whereabouts? And when was that? Did Olav and Gunhild report that he had arrived safely? Did Ole write home for a time (for some years??), but then stopped?
He is hard to find. It might help to tell more of the story, if you can.

Good morning.
Lyndal40 : No I dont think that is the person.
JaneC : Olav and Gunnhild Bakke returned to Norway and lived here in their old days. They did not know what happend. My mother died in 1998 and we did not talk that much of this story. She was just 6 the last time she saw her father. But I started to look for him after he internet came. So much info maybe lost during the time.
There was a couple of rumors. 1. It was told he was a sailor at that time and should send money to his Family. This was in New York. He did not come back to the boat. They said there was found a body in the sea the next day? When family should collect his belongings, there was nothing. I am not sure of this story because there is so many question there..??
2. Some acquaintances were sitting in a park in New York. They saw a man from a distance resembling Ole. They made eye contact, but then he disappeared in a hurry.
The last story has given me a feeling that he simply jumped in the Us and continued a new life there. I know many did that.
I know this is diffecult to solve, but I feel I just have to give it a try.
I am so gratfull for all help in here.
